I loved this bed from the moment I saw it online (and what a great deal) and now I love it my room. The wood is very true to the color shown, almost black. The bed is of very high quality and all pieces arrived in perfect condition. Assembly was a pain - the instructions have you screw in 16 screws via an awkward little canal with just a hex wrench, 1/4 turn by 1/4 turn. We found that using needle-nose pliers made this step much faster and more bearable! Also the instructions want you to glue everything together meaning this bed can never be moved! We chose to only glue the headboard together and use the screws only on everything else.
The bed was delivered to my front porch within one week in three boxes. The largest box which includes the head board was falling apart when arrived. I was very worry that if there was any piece missing or dammaged, but it turned out every piece was there in perfect condition. Since the box was falling apart and extremely heavy, I had to open the box right there at my front door and bring the parts in piece by piece.
Assembly was a pain. It took me a whole afternoon by myself to put it together. If you have 2 persons working together, it might take less time. On top of many wooden dowls and different kind of screws to connect the pieces of boards, the bed came with 16 longs screws that are extremly difficult to screw them into the bed because you have to do it in a very wierd angle unless you have some special tool that will work in that condition. I think this is major design flaw becasue the manufacturer needs to think about that it is the general consumer who is trying to put the bed together not some professional with special tools in the shop.
Other than difficulty of assembly, the bed is great. It looks great. It is solid wood and very heavy. I love it after it's put together.
Contrary to what other reviewers had said, we did not find it particularly difficult to assemble this bed. We are a retired couple and we were not overwhelmed. It was very time consuming - agreed. But a great deal of thought seems to have gone into the construction of this bed and so there are many parts to deal with. Like many other recviewers, we agree you do NOT need to use the glue that is recommended - - the bed is built like a fortrress without it! We can't even figure out what purpose it would serve. Instructions are quite clear but we recommend you read through all of them to get a feel for the overall construction. There are extras fo all the screws, etc. We bought the matching night stand and also found it to be extremely well constructed. The end result is a very strong, beautiful bed! (A personal suggestion: I am putting a large piece of cardboard on the slats at the foot end of the bed to prevent the tucked in sheets from falling into the spaces betwen slats! Otherwise, any bedding that may fall between the slats will show since the bed is off the floor!!!! )
How did the color on site compare with the actual product? Exactly as i expected.
Please tell us about the quality of the product. Excellent quality.
How accurate was the on site description of the product? Very accurate description.
The bed is just as pictured and is beautiful. Ordered on a Tuesday, shipped across country and received on a Monday. It took me 3.5 hours to assemble on my own, with the help of a 4 yr old and my 2 cats. It was very easy to understand how to put together. We actually had about twice as many hardware bits and pieces as we needed. The only thing to look out for is the boards that support the bed; as they aren't as finished as the rest of the wood, I wound up with 3 slivers and my 4 yr old with one. The wood was extremely sturdy and thick; for the price I was afraid the headboard would be flimsy, but not at all. The bed is extremely sturdy. We are using our pillowtop mattress; probably 18" thick and still have plenty of headboard showing. Also, I have never owned a platform bed before; I didn't want to feel like we were on the floor and it doesn't. Sitting on the bed, my feet touch the floor but is not "on the floor". There is enough clearance to put under the bed boxes under the bed. Really, we couldn't be happier with the purchase and highly recommend.
Did the color match the color displayed onsite? Yes, very dark espresso, just as pictured
How is the quality of the product? Excellent Quality, more than I expected for the price
Did the description onsite accurately describe the product? Exactly
When you finally get the bed built, I guess its o.k. But their build system and tools used to do so is complete junk. They use a pivot tool to install the screws in some very difficult access areas, and while you use it, it¿s slowly eating itself alive, as it¿s an angled fit, that eats up both the tool and the screws you¿re trying to tighten. Once you install the bed, don¿t expect to ever uninstall it, because the tool is pretty much shot after the build process. This is complete junk; I wouldn¿t have wasted my money on it, had I known.
Spend a few dollars more and get something better engineered
This frame is very high quality and study, and is also elegant. The product that arrives looks just like the online photos. There is considerable assembly required. It isn't complicated but does take a couple hours. There are a lot of slats, so there is plenty of support for the mattress without a box spring. I highly recommend it!
This Axium rubberwood bed is the second bed I bought from Overstock in the past three months. The first, the Kota Queen-size, went out of stock or I would have bought it again. The Kota was pretty easy to put together but tedious to screw in the slats. The Axxium is a whole other ball of wax, bad instructions and a terrible do-it-yourself construction procedure. The key detail in putting together this bed is to align the metal bolts to the metal screw in sleeves in headboard. That detail is put in a small box at the bottom of one instruction page. A whole page of the instructions just shows the slats on the bed frame. To screw in the bolts , I found that using a allen key hex driver in an extender that you have in a multi-head screwdriver is the best way to tighten the bolt until the very end, when the allen wrench with the bed works best to tighten the bolt. IMHO, Overstock is clearing out the Axium bed because there were too many customer complaints about the difficulty in putting the bed together. My Kota bed has the headboard in one piece, pre-assembled with legs. You have to attach the Axium legs to the headboard. With the Kota, front or back, the headboard looks fine, unlike the Axium with its holes in the back where you insert the bolts. The Kota Queen-size is now back in stock, its base price $** more than I paid for it over two months ago. Even at its higher price now, the Kota is a better buy than the Axium if you factor in aggravation and sweat. By the way, if the dowels you have wiggle in the slots where you attach the side railing, instead of glue you can use masking tape around the dowel and pressure fit the #10 dowel into the slot. The cam locks that come with the Axium are junk, so be care when tightening them. My bed came with one broken center rail and the CSR at Overstock did an fine job taking my replacement request down and arranging for a replacement center rail. From the other comments of most customers describing how putting this bed together was pretty easy, I now realize that Overstock must have many Mensa members with the construction abilities of master contractor Michael Holmes. I think this Axium bed has a terribly flawed design that makes it a very hard DIY assembly project. The Axium bed has good rubberwood components and bad everything else.
Everything arrived promptly and in good condition. As other reviewers have mentioned, it definitely takes two people to assemble it. I got a small sliver while we were putting the bed together, but I did want a bed frame that was made out of wood! The bed slats, being unseen after assembly, are not finished south like the exposed pieces are.
Not going to lie, it was a bit time consuming to put together, but its not too bad.. in all honesty I had the bf do it and I assisted... it is very very sturdy, the finish is deep dark espresso but not black which is what I was looking for. but it has the appearance of a wood grain.. there are so many slats and they are all finished and not just cheap plywood... I use with a box spring just because.. but I believe it can be used either way... however with the box spring you don't see very much of the headboard.. either way, I love it and shipping was super fast, although I think i had to wait an extra day for the 3rd box that came with it.. not sure what that was about but no biggie, I wasn't ready to put it together anyways... I'd say it took a good 3-4 hours to put together.... ***, fast shipping and great product.. I would definitely recommend!!
For ppl who have assembled the bed... I am trying to assemble now... each slat needs to be screwed into the left and the right side rails... however, the side rails are very narrow. so the pre-drilled holes in the slats only reach the edge of the side rails rather than the middle of the side rails. How did you deal with this problem?claytontang on Sep 9, 2014Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
well, I fixed it out myself... went to hardware store and bought four 2" flat corner braces to hook the 2 main horizontal slats from moving forward, then cut a piece of 1/2"x1/2"x80" wood beam into 8cm pieces using a handsaw to space the slats. it's weird that in the 146 reviews so far, no one has mentioned this issue...claytontang on Sep 10, 2014
What is the distance from the floor to the top of the slats that the mattress will rest on?ebsatl on Mar 18, 2014Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Hello, ebsatl. The platform sits 16 inches from the floor. Thank you for shopping with us.overstockcustomercare1 on Mar 31, 2014
Hello ars2028, thank you for your inquiry! No, this bed does not require a box spring. However you can use a box spring if you would like. I hope this helps. Happy shopping! overstockcustomercare1 on Jan 16, 2014
Nope. I use a futon mattress, actually, and it is GREAT. My sister got the same bed for my nephew and put a mattress (no box spring) on it - excellent. It is an A+ bed.liese on Aug 2, 2014
