- This astrological compass is a replica of the ancient Chinese astrological compass
- Compasses were originally inventions of Chinese fortune tellers made of lodestone (a mineral composed of an iron oxide which aligns itself in a north-south direction)
- They designed the compass on a square slab, which had markings for the cardinal points and the constellations
- It is wonderfully preserved in a red, gold, maroon, and black leather box with a hand-painted phoenix and dragon design
- The inside and outside of the box are laced with a fine, red-stained leather
- The inside of the box is also adorned with ancient Chinese visages and beautiful characters

This really is Chinese!
I laughed when I opened the lid because I did not realize that it was Chinese all around! The inside of the lid has a ton of Chinese symbols/words written inside it. It did not come with any instructions which was a disappointment but maybe that's what is written inside the lid? The latch is not tight enough so it does not close well. This is going to be a Christmas present for my son though, so I think the price was right and I know he'll have fun playing with it and trying to figure it out. It seems really unique though and might be a neat show and tell item.

We bought this for our 8 year old son for Christmas and he was thrilled with it. We are adopting from China, so he is interested in all things Chinese. He was thrilled to learn that the Chinese invented the compass. The workmanship on this piece is amazing. The box is very sturdy and a great house for the beautiful compass. I would highly recommend this compass be purchased for all ages.

After waiting as long as I did for this & it was suppose to be a gift for a dear friend of mind, it will not be sent to him. I am highly dissapointed in it! It is ugly & not acceptable. The inside looks terrible, it doesn't look nice as in the photo, and the price is over-rated. The workmanship is poor. I would not recommend this to anyone. I am returning it.
