solid wood piece
I was looking for solid wood furniture, and this is exactly what this is. The bookshelf is exactly as pictured. I'm so sick of particle board furntiure and so I was very pleased when I could see the wood grains through the paint. It was a little annoying putting it together. The directions give you one big picture for all the steps at once and so it was a confusing, but I figured it out.

Yes, it is easier to put together with 2 people. Yes, the "antiquing" is cheesy, but is easily fixable and not too noticable. Yes, the directions are poorly written, but it was not too difficult to put together in maybe 45 min-1 hour with good gluing (used my own wood glue, the little container they send is very small) and 2 people. After that it is fairly sturdy, it is cute next to the door to hold shoes and pocket junk in a bowl I set on top. I don't think that the measurements they have posted on here are right, but luckily it fits the space even better than I thought it would. The actual measurements once assembled are 32 1/8in tall, 34 1/4in wide, 15in deep, and the top shelf panel is 9 3/4in deep x 34 1/4in wide.

The assembly isn't THAT bad.
After reading the reviews I was a bit worried about the assembly. The booklet even says that you need 2 people to put it together (I'm pretty sure they didn't mean an adult and a 2 year old). I put it together without another adult though and did not find it necessary to have any assistance. It only took me about 30 minutes to put this together, and that time would have been less if my 2 year old had not "helped" me. It is sturdy and attractive.

Great Little Black Bookcase!
I love this bookcase! The design is interesting and assembly was NOT as difficult as others have stated - no more so than any ready to assemble furniture. The "antiquing" is the only thing that MAY be a bit disappointing...I thought it would be more obvious and it is truly quite subtle. The quality of this piece is as good if not better than some ready to assemble pieces that I have purchased from national brand stores. Overall...I am VERY happy with this fabulous bookcase!

This bookcase is NOT all wood......it's mostly made of MDF(medium density fiberboard)..........VERY DISAPPOINTING and the price is too high. Overstock this is a bummer..................

Meeting my needs
I had purchased the shelf because it was really similar to one I purchase some years ago. The instructions said you need at least 2 persons to assemble. Well, I did manage to do it by myself. I just had to think of ways to sit it to reach screw areas or to place a piece. The instructions do not give single steps, so at one point I had put the ends on the middle shelf, when you have to put all the parts to one end first, standing it on its side, because you cannot squeeze the other parts between the ends once the middle shelf is attached. I just took it apart and thought it thru better. The one really faulty piece is the middle shelf. It is held together with dowels and wood screws. The wood screws are too short to get into the other piece well enough and does not hold. I hunted down some meatier and longer wood screws and replaced the holes with them and it all is much better. You will need a phillips and a flat head screw driver. The flat head will help support the plugs that you screw a larger screw into. If not supported, they will spin and you will find yourself trying to dig them back out of the hole taking you longer. But the price is good for such an item and I would purchase again.

Don't waste your time!!!
This bookshelf was extremely poor quality. My husband and I were putting it together and screwing a screw into a nut and it just kept turning, not allowing for the pieces to tighten up, thus leaving the shelf very unsturdy and wabbly. I would not recommend buying this. Not worth it. I thought. it was a great price, however I would spend much more to have a quality product instead. Sent it back immediatley.

Arrived damaged from shipping but the damaged shelves were immediately replaced and shippe byOverstock.

We love it
We like the finished product very much, but have to say the instructions for putting together are not done well. You have to be able to conceptually figure it out; and we did. May not be sturdy enough for holding heavy books, but we did not purchase this piece for that purpose. It sits under a mounted TV and holds the DVR and DVD on bottom shelf very well, hidden from eye line sight. MIddle "pocket" shelf, we use to throw hats, scarfs, mittens into; adds some color to the room. We are very happy with the product. Giving it 4 stars and not 5 is because of the instructions, made putting together more time consuming than it should have been.
