Buying a piece of furniture this big, online, basically sight-unseen, is a risky venture. We had shopped at nearby furniture stores and saw similar tables (counter height, seats 8), but the lowest price we could find for something in this class was at least $400 more.
FEATURES. Besides the cost savings, this table had one feature we could not find in any comparable table: The legs are NOT in the corners. When seating 8 at a table, it is nice not to have legs in the corner. We tested that within a week of assembly by having another family over. (They liked it so much, they are considering it for their house too.)
Instead of the corner legs, this has a pedestal of sorts. It is a square frame about 25" on each side. It has a small storage cabinet between the legs. The cabinet is about 8" deep (and about 24"x24"). There are doors on two sides of the cabinet. We're trying to figure out exactly what to put in there... tablecloths? candlesticks? Not really a cabinet we would be in every day, but a nice touch.
There is a board on top of that cabinet as well, and with the bar stools it is the perfect height to stretch our feet over, though my wife has forbidden me and our two boys from doing so. Rats!
The leaf folds into the table. The top has a gear to ease opening--a nice touch. Clasps hold the table sides together, whether the leaf is open or not. Without the leaf, the table seats 6 comfortable. With the leaf, 8.
ASSEMBLY. The instructions are fairly straightforward. The first stool took me a while as I tried to piece it all together; the remaining seven were much faster. Each stool has a mission-style rib that fits left or right. Once or twice I put that on the wrong side as the sticker was not on every one. Gluing the chairs is not in the instructions, and I did not glue them, just screwed them all together. At some point, if the stools or table begin to wobble, I will probably dis-assemble them and glue and clamp them. The table actually assembled faster than the first chair.
FIT AND FINISH. No complaints. No scratches in packaging or delivery. The table and stools all feel solid at this point.
DELIVERY. The freight carrier gave us plenty of advance notice of delivery. They rolled the pallet up and left it in our garage. I then moved the pieces individually into the dining room for assembly.
