Altra Winslow 5 Drawer Storage Chest

Given the cost of this item, I didn't not have overly high expectations, quality-wise. My previous bedroom set was particle board construction but with care, it lasted over 30 years and five moves. Unfortunately, the quality of this piece was much worse than I thought it would be. One side panel had a gouge near the bottom, which was not apparent until all the pieces were unpacked. I should have boxed the whole thing back up and sent it back right then but I'd searched high and low for a smaller-scale chest that would fit a narrow wall in my room and had already ordered companion pieces so decided to go ahead and assemble it and try to repair the gouge with paint or a furniture stain marker. The two side panels and front trim piece came pre-assembled. Unfortunately the fit was loose with no way to really fix them. The assembly in general was time consuming, about 3 hours but not terribly difficult. I have built numerous pieces of furniture so have better than average skills. It might take someone else longer, particularly given that there were no written instructions, only pictures. There was a website given with video instructions but I didn't not feel the need to go there. The drawer bottoms and back panel of the unit are cardboard so not terribly sturdy. The back panel is in two pieces that do not really fit well together (even when properly assembled) so there is a gap between them. Once the main unit was assembled, using all the appropriate, pre-drilled holes and parts, I went to slide in the drawers only to find that the smaller drawers at the top of the unit did not fit properly (one side was higher than the other). This also impacts the drawer below them making it hard to open and close. As soon as I saw this piece fully assembled, I cancelled the order for the companion pieces. I would love to return this piece but do not think it’s possible now that it’s put together. Instead it’s been relegate to a linen closet. A couple of other notes if you do purchase this piece, be prepared for a huge mess with the Styrofoam packing, there were tiny bits of it EVERYWHERE! I’ve ordered numerous pieces of furniture online and have never seen such cheap, horrible packing materials. There are also very low weight limits on the drawers because of the cardboard (which is not reinforced in any way). The ad states you can store your books and magazines but I certainly would not advise it.

Decided to try this chester drawers out because price was right and I was looking for a chest to put TV on in guest bedroom. Quality is what you would expect for the price. It will scratch easily. Drawers worked great except top drawers sit slightly off. That might be me on putting it together. Took me about 4 hours to put together by myself. When putting top and bottom on will need some help. Instructions were good but could have added a little verbage in spots. Overall I am pleased, it will serve it's purpose.
