Holiday Cocktails

Eighty years ago today, the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and ending Prohibition.


As a celebration of the anniversary, I've collected some holiday cocktail recipes that are full of good tidings and great cheer. Feel free to gather with your friends and toast America, our Constitution, and the Beastie Boys, for our Right to Party.

Gingerbread Martini (1 serving)

Crushed gingersnaps and ginger liqueur (to rim glass)

2 tablespoons ginger liqueur

2 tablespoons vanilla-citrus liqueur

1.5 tablespoons coffee-flavored rum

1 tablespoon honey

2 tablespoons whipped cream

1 cup ice cubes


Dip martini-glass rims in ginger liqueur and crushed gingersnaps.


Stir together ginger liqueur, vanilla-citrus liqueur, rum, honey, and whipped cream in a cocktail shaker. Add ice cubes and shake vigorously for 30 seconds or until chilled. Strain into martini glass.


Pomegranate Mimosas (1 serving)

1 ounce fresh orange juice

1 ounce pomegranate juice

2 ounces sparkling wine


Combine all ingredients in champagne flute, enjoy.


Mulled Wine with Cranberries (4 servings)

1 1/2 cups cranberry juice cocktail

1/2 cup sugar

2 cinnamon sticks

2 pieces of star anise

3 cups dry red wine

1/2 cup fresh cranberries


Combine cranberry juice cocktail, sugar, cinnamon sticks, and star anise in a large saucepan.  Simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in wine and cranberries and bring back to a simmer. Serve warm.
