The violin is perfectly fine, in the other posts, it is obvious that they do not know anything about orchestral instruments. of course the string will come unattached if shipped or if under stress from different temperatures. the bow isnt warped, you just have to adjust it, and why should you care more about the case than the object inside? its fine, i have one, it just required little assembly that others are too lazy to doRead More
Okay, the strings weren't good, but anybody would want to get the right strings for their style anyway, I bought "fiddle" strings for mine. The rosin was old, but duh it's overstock.com, not newly minted.com. The bow could easily be warped when you get it, mine wasn't, but that and the rosin is probably the first thing you should replace anyway, a better bow with high quality rosin, on better strings makes the entire instrument sound so much better, it's like a much higher cost instrument. People that expect such a low priced instrument to sound like a Stradivari original should think again, while looking at the price tag. Dollar for dollar, you get more than your money's worth. Of course some snooty violin teacher will tell you it's not too good, it isn't in the realm of violins, it's a basic beginner instrument. The changes needed like strings, bows and rosin will be needed on any lower end instrument, violin or otherwise. Think of it as an opportunity to tailor the instrument to the player, and their style. Any violin under a thousand dollars is going to have something or another to find fault with. The only question that need be answered is did you good value for what you paid. I'd have to say yes, and then some.Read More
I purchased this violin for my son, we had been renting a violin for a year until we found this Violin kit with everything he needed to continue playing all for less than the rental cost.Read More
This was a suprise for someone that wanted to take up the violin. Perfect for 1st timers!Read More
You get what you pay for! As I write this, my violin is in the music shop being repaired. This is the second violin we've tried. The first one was even in worse shape. The bridge we received isn't the correct size for the violin and the neck has a raised piece (that shouldn't be raised at all) that keeps the strings from laying as they should. We knew nothing about violins when we ordered this, but got "schooled" right away after we received both violins. Save yourself some heartache and don't buy one of these violins. Even for a beginner, they aren't worth it. The repair being done on our violin right now is going to cost as much as we paid for the violin itself here on Overstock. Even then, we're not guaranteed that the violin is going to have a long life. Not a great buying experience at all!Read More
I understood from reading the reviews I'd have to buy a new bow and rosin. I was not anticipating the bow to come with already broken strings as though someone had already used it. My largest issues stems from the fact that it came quite loose and in trying to tighten it, the strings became dislodged and I'll need to take it to a music store. Fortunately, it turns out that this is the wrong size for my daughter so we are going to put off the added expense of fixing the violin so it actually plays.Read More
This is a good violin to learn on for the value. Ignore the people who complained about this instrument. They have no knowledge of musical instruments particularly of the violin. It is a difficult instrument to learn and takes years to master. As a noob, I sound horrible due to my technique. The only issue I had was tuning. The strings are brand new and need some time to stretch out before you can get a reliable sound. Overall its a good buy for what you get.Read More
While I was teaching my violin student, the tail broke. I was able to fix it, but it is only good for beginners. She had it since 2010, and it has had quite a few problems. Please don't waste your money in this violin.Read More
I got it in the mail and was so excited. I am a beginner so this instrument is perfect, but was sad that the bridge was missing. I contacted customer service though and they sent out a new one ASAPRead More
Instead of spending months trying to find a decent used violin at a flea market/thrift store, I spent the $50 or so on a new one. Every component on this violin is cheap, including: soundboard, back/sides,fingerboard, and tuners. Bridge is decent. Tuners are of low quality and require a little persuasion to stay in turn (stick with fine tuners for most of your tuning). Got this violin as something for my kids to beat on when they grow up. If you get this violin for a beginner, learning will be more difficult. All that being said, however, this is a good buy. You are not going to find a cheaper price for an entire kit: violin, bow, rosin, and case. Is $50 worth all this frustration? The simple answer is yes. Beginners can practice on this for a couple years and then splurge on a several thousand dollar violin when they become competent. And because they've been playing on such poor quality, that high end model will feel and sound that much sweeterRead More

A History of Electric Light
On September 4, 1882, one square mile of lower Manhattan was aglow with light as the first commercial power station went into operation. Thanks to Thomas Edison's brilliance, for about 24 cents per kilowatt hour, 59 customers were provided with lights and electricity at night. By the late 1880s, the demand for that service had grown so much that small power stations could be found in many U.S. and European cities. What to Pack for Africa's Highest Peak
Imagine that you are planning a trip that will take you from the equator to Antarctica in seven days. Now imagine that you have to limit the amount of gear you pack to 35 pounds or less. The task is getting more complicated. What kind of luggage would you choose and how would you pack for a trip that encompasses such extreme changes in climate and altitude? When Erica Davis, a paraplegic athlete, and Tara Butcher, a physically challenged athlete, climb Africa's highest peak, they will have to answer exactly those questions. The challenge: Mount Kilimanjaro rises from nearly sea level all the way up to 19,330 feet. The trail climbs from the hot bushland through rain forest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic glaciers up to the rocky Uhuru peak. A climb like Mt. Kili presents special challenges when it comes to luggage, clothing and gear. Being prepared for the weather and temperature extremes is a necessity, but it's also important not to pack too much. There is a 35-pound weight limit to each piece of luggage carried by a porter. Most climbers pack one 35-pound capacity bag to go up with a porter and one small daypack to carry up themselves. The daypack: Erica and Tara will have 7 days to summit Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. As they pass from one ecological zone to the next, their needs will change and so will the contents of their daypacks. Each day Erica and Tara will repack their daypacks in anticipation of the specific challenges of the day's journey. In general, their daypacks will include things like water, snacks, dry clothing, waterproof gear and sunscreen. The importance of keeping clothing and gear dry cannot be overstated. When choosing a daypack, a small to medium backpack made of lightweight, moisture-resistant material that comes with a removable waterproof shell will be ideal. It's also helpful if the backpack has convenient access to a water bottle compartment or can accommodate a water bladder. Plenty of pockets, zipper compartments and hooks are also handy. What to pack: A sturdy but lightweight water-repellant duffel bag with a capacity of about 35 pounds is ideal for the trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The bag needs to have room for plenty of layers of breathable, moisture-wicking clothing and layers of fleece clothing, as well as a waterproof layer. To save space, it's a good idea to pack clothing that does double duty, such as pants that easily convert into shorts. Aside from clothing, the climb will also require accessories like sunglasses, hats and gloves, plus equipment like trekking poles and a headlamp, as well as toiletries like sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Support the Challenged Athletes Foundation: Overstock.com and the C.H.E.K Institute are co-sponsoring Erica and Tara's climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise awareness for athletes with physical challenges who wish to participate and compete in sports. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). CAF raises funds to give physically challenged athletes the opportunity to stay active and competitive in the sports they love. To show your support for physically challenged athletes like Erica and Tara, donate now to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for the Fit 4 Kili Climb. Diamond Cuts Fact Sheet
A diamond's cut is crucial in displaying the stone's quality. The cut refers to the way a diamond has been shaped and the precise facets of the gemstone. The cut is an important aspect to consider because a good cut can beautify an imperfect diamond and highlight the merits of an excellent gem, while a bad cut can ruin a gorgeous stone. Diamond facets must be cut precisely and symmetrically, so the stone can sparkle. You can choose from various diamond shapes, and different cuts complement different pieces of jewelry. As one of the 4 C's of buying diamonds, cut is an important thing to understand when you're shopping for diamond jewelry.
Facts about Soccer Balls
Obviously, having the right soccer ball is pretty important if you want to play a competitive soccer game. Once you've gotten your soccer cleats, soccer jerseys, soccer socks and other soccer gear ready to go, you aren't going to get very far without a soccer ball. There are three basic sizes of soccer balls. Players who are 5 to 8 years old play with a size three soccer ball. Youth soccer, ages 4 to 12, play with a size four, and anyone 13 and over plays with a size five. After that, soccer balls come in a variety of different materials and panel designs. A soccer ball has three basic pieces: the cover, the lining and the bladder. Each affects the "feel" and "control" of the ball.
How to Choose the Right Dog Kennel Size
One of the first things you need for a new dog is a quality dog kennel. The right dog kennel can help potty train your puppy, make traveling and vet visits with your dog easier, and give your dog a cozy place to curl up at night or to keep out of mischief while you're away. The wrong size dog kennel, however, can make things uncomfortable for your pooch and a pain for you. As a rule of thumb, kennels and crates should be at least 4 inches taller and longer than your dog and allow him to stand, sit, and turn around easily. You'll also want to make sure there is water and a blanket or towel in there for him. These guidelines can help you find the right fit for your pup when shopping for dog kennels.
