  • Yamaha finest subwoofer?

I first purchased one of these subs around 2003 on the recommendation of my brother who worked for the local electrical goods store. He said it just wasn't moving and that he thought that people were either afraid of the 1000w rating or they just felt they couldn't justify spending that much for a sub. These things originally retailed for around $2200.00 each in Australia in 2001 but I ended up getting mine for $900 new. These subs are otic powerhouses that refuse to clip even at the most insane volumes, during explosive movie scenes or bass intensive music playback. To date, I've thoroughly enjoyed the audio partnership except for the time when an electrical storm in 2008 destroyed parts of it's internals necessitating a trip to the local technician for insurance repair. To be fair, the electrical storm also destroyed 2 PCs a JBL amplifier and about a foot of telephone cable disappeared from the wall in a cloud of smoke. In around 2010 I picked up a second YST-SW800 in pristine condition for around $*. It is now 2016 and I still have both these subs and they are still working beautifully. I now have them paired with a duo of Japanese imported Yamaha NS-1000M Monitors that sound amazing to my ears. I feel sorry for the other reviewers here who have had such wretched luck with theirs, because mine have brought nothing but sonic joy to both myself and everyone who hears them. Get one, get a pair, they're fantastic!

  • great sound but fail constantly

i have now had three of these subs and the sound is fantastic, but, they all stopped working for no reason within 6 months of buying. 1 failed after only 2 weeks where it was only used twice! all used on all yamaha systems all set up corectly. they all blew out the amps after a little yelp noise for no reason. this simply should not happen on a very expensive unit. they clearly have weak amps. very poor.

  • Yamaha does not support its products - bad speaker

I have been through two of these. They are both in my garage collecting dust. Both fried due to power surges at different times. (I bought the second one to replace the first one after a spike, assuming it was a fluke.) Keep in mind that all my other components were plugged in at the same time and NONE of them failed due to these surges. In each case, I came home to find the power had been off. When I turned everything on to watch tv, the subwoofer would power on, but would not make noise. No one seems to have a clue as to how to repair them. Finding a Yamaha dealer that actually WORKS ON THEM is impossible and they want you to send a 40# subwoofer to them and pay shipping both ways plus pay for the repair of something that they did not engineer right in the first place. I've always owned Yamaha equipment and have two receivers as well as surround speakers plus the subs. I've given up on Yamaha now and will never go back. These were EXPENSIVE, high end speakers and they proved to be junk. Now I own *** and they have been great for over 5 years. Yamaha used to be great, now they are just run-of-the-mill electronics with terrible support.
