  • compare with HyperPS

    I bought this item mainly for use of the portable compressor. To compare, I also bought the 2015 HyperPS portable battery that also comes with a compressor. For the test, I made sure each was fully charged and then inflated four 17" tires from 24 to 32 psi and an additional four more 19" tires from 30 to 38 psi. BATTERY Winner - Dr Tech X1 Comments: : At the end of the test, the X1 showed 4/4 remaining, HyperPS 1/4 remaining. I was surprised that the X1 rated at only 13,600mAh (compared to HyperPS 20,000mAh) had significantly more battery life remaining at the end of the test. I concluded that either the HyperPS is over-rated or that the compressor included with the X1 is more efficient, or the battery indicator on the X1 was faulty. However, I've been using the X1 more and haven't encountered any issues so I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt and attribute the discrepancy to the efficiency of the compressors. (A small technical point: each compressor was run for approximately the same amount of time. So with the X1 tires were actually inflated a bit more than with the HyperPS) SPEED Winner - Dr Tech X1 Comments: X1 ~3.0psi / min, HyperPS ~2.3psi / min. The X1 was the clear winner. SIZE Winner - Dr Tech X1 Comments: The X1 carrying case and compressor are smaller. The case fits comfortably fits in one of the compartments in my trunk whereas the HyperPS doesn't fit. NOISE Winner - HyperPS Comments: While both compressors are loud, the X1 is definitely louder. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say it's about 30% louder. GAUGE ACCURACY Tie Comments: They were both pretty bad in this category. And while the unit is in use, the needle doesn't register the actual psi. I would recommend using a separate tire pressure gauge USE Tie Comments: The X1 has a very short hose. This means that if the tire valve stem is near the top, the unit will hang from the hose sometimes leaning against the rim and vibrating. At first this concerned me, but after using it multiple times and seeing no apparent damage to the rim, it is no longer a concern for me. The HyperPS unit has a longer hose and the connection may be of slightly better quality but for all practical purposes, it doesn't make much of a difference. OVERALL Considering how much better the X1 performed over the HyperPS in the two critical categories, battery life and speed, for me it was the clear winner. The more I used it, the more I liked it. Both units came with some cheap-feeling accessories, but I didn't compare them since I mainly intend to compressor and jump-start functionality.

    My battery died at a stoplight this morning so I had to use this to jump start my car in traffic to get myself to the autoparts store. Then after purchasing a new battery I jumpstarted the car to drive home. Along the way the car died again and I had to jump it yet again...at this point the car would not stay running when I unhooked the unit. SO although this is probably not recommended, I drove home - about 2 miles - with this connected to the battery. Best $$ I have spent in a long time!!!
