Like all electronics innovations, cell phones
were once thought of as a luxury; mobile phone companies had to give away free cell phones with service contracts to get people to try them. To prevent customer-hopping from contract to contract, they "locked" phones to work on only one network. Today, unlocked cell phones--cell phones not preset to one cell service provider--are available.
