I bought this remote because it got good reviews on CNET and was cheaper than the Harmony remotes. This remote comes with a short set of instructions and is programmed on the remote screen rather than your computer. The biggest problem with this is that the remote codes stored inside the remote can never be updated. So if you buy products that are newer than the remote the codes probably won't be available. I spent hours trying to program it and on the items that already had codes in the remote it wasn't too bad. But I have a new Samsung LED tv and a new DirecTV HD-DVR. Neither of these worked with the codes already in the remote. I attempted to manually program all of the buttons, which took a lot of time. Some of which could have been saved with a better manual. After all of this I realized that by programming the remote manually you don't have separate buttons for on and off. This is really annoying if you already have some components on and you want to use one of the activities. For example if you already have the cable box on and you want to use the "Watch TV" activity...the remote will turn on the TV and then turn off the cable box. This completely eliminates the purpose of the remote activities. After fiddling with this thing for a couple of weeks I broke down and bought the Harmony One. It took 20 minutes to program on my computer screen, and it did everything I wanted it to without even having to tweak it. I love the Harmony. I would strongly recommend that you spend some extra money and get one of the Harmony remotes. If you buy a device that is newer than the remote the Harmony can be updated, unlike this remote.

Does not recognize directv HD receiver
from Boise, ID,  Jan 8, 2012

I was hoping for a universal remote, one in exchange for the five I had. The remote has many features and feels good ergonomically. It programed the tv, bluRay, and other components but would not take any of the codes for my HD directv dvr, tried for hours with all preprogramed codes, nothing worked. Since I use directv most often, I was disappointed with this purchase. The instructions are way too simplistic, a common thread when I googled troubleshooting. I may give to a relative as it is of little use for me as a true universal remote.

Great Product
from Los Angeles, CA,  Apr 23, 2010

Does what it says. It is universal remote that works on any IR product and has good range around the house. One missing feature is UHF band that could be useful to control my Dish Network box in secondary rooms and my bose system. Judgement still out on the battery consumption as it is a recent purchase. So far 3 weeks in and still working.

Best Gifrt
from Houston, TX,  Mar 17, 2010

I got this as a gift for my friend. He loved it. He stated it was easy to set up and worked on all of his electronic, even a system that was almost 10 years old. He wanted to know where I got it so he could get one for the bedroom.

Good remote for the money. It will control a lot of devices. The only downfall were the instructions, they could have been more detailed. Once you fumble your way through, it was pretty easy to figure everything else out. I am considering getting a second one. Great remote and good value,

Mission Accomplished
from Bellingham, WA,  Feb 3, 2010

We had the remote for our office dvd/video player disappear, and couldn't run the dvd menu portion without it. I decided to take a chance and order this product, and was pleasantly suprised at the high quality of this product. It is easy to program, and actually is better than the unit we lost. I have also been able to eliminate the multiple remotes with this unit, and now run my Sony DVD/Video Player and Zenith Television with it alone. It's even better than what the cable company provides at home, and I am thinking about replacing it with this as well.

good uni remote for good price. more expensive on other sites and the listed msrp so a good buy in overstock. generally pretty easy to set up. fairly intuitive. takes a couple tries to get the more advanced functions down. very good coverage on devices.

Very Pleased
from Cleveland OH,  Jan 9, 2010

The R50 is well-made and performs perfectly. This was the 4th or 5th universal learning remote I purchased that claimed it would control all my devices. The TV, DVD, VHS and Cable Box were never a problem. My Sherwood tuner was the device none of the others could figure out, except for basic on and off. The R50 had no problems whatsoever with it. My only complaint were the programming instructions, which were terrible.

A great remote
 from Seattle,  Oct 2, 2009

A friend loaned me her flat panel LCD television while she is out of the country. She didn't have the remote and I found this one. The setup is very easy with instructions provided on the remote's screen. It was so easy in fact that I set up my other TVs that I have lost the remotes to. It found my DVD players and VCRs with no problems.

controls 18 devices! and learns
from new york,  Aug 1, 2009

the best features of this remote:**color lcd screen (with nice icons to choose your devices with)**controls 18 devicesvirtually unlimited macros ( the ability to program steps into the remote,so all you have to do is press one button , and the remote will completewhatever steps you want it to,. ((ie...turn on tv, turn to input2, turn on dvd player set to rear input, turn on cable box, turn cable box to list of cable box recorded programs))......now I'm all set to transfer my cable programs to a DVD disc. all with the press of 1 button!) and you can do many more complicated sequences too.**tons of buttons for functions (on the lcd screen)**it also has the ability to learn tons of buttons from other remote controls (if you have the old remote)--------------------------------------------------------the worst features:(not too say these are that bad, but it would be nice have)**there is no way to backup all your saved data and macros. **I also didn't see a way to just add misc. buttons for features under a pre-programmed remote(although, I might have missed it)--------------------------------------------------------but all in all this is a great remote for the price, in ways its better than some of the $200-300.00 remotes, and its got a great design to it, it just look nice.
