  • Great PC for the price!

I have the IBM ThinkCentre 8188-M2P which is a little weird because the Overstock order said it was an 8177. But, after looking it up online, I found that there is little or no difference in the two other than the model number. There may be some differences inside the cases but I have no way of knowing since I don't have two to compare. Keep in mind that I am a computer/network technician, so what I am about to describe is only for those who know what they're doing. If you're not looking to do any work on this and just want a computer then you'll probably still like this PC for the price right out of the box but I did pimp mine considerably. Anyway, it's a great computer! It's not a high end dual-core processor but it is a P4 3.0 GHz with HyperThreading, which I think is probably the next best thing. You cannot beat this price. Franky, I'm shocked at how much potential this thing has for the price. It came with a 40 GB hard drive (133 MHz ultra ATA motherboard connection) and I popped a 160 GB - ATA 133 drive in there and made the 40 gig drive a secondary. I did have to remove the bottom CD burner to make room for two hard drives though. It came with two CD/DVD drives. One is a DVD-ROM only, meaning it can only play DVD's and does no burning of any kind. The second one, which I removed to make room for another hard drive, is a CD burner. It doesn't burn or play DVD's. This wasn't an issue for me since I replaced my older computer with this one and just moved my DVD player/burner into this newer computer and took out the plain old DVD-ROM drive. My old PC is a P4 1.6 GHz with 1 GB of SD RAM and I just got fed up with the slowness. Sure I would like a brand new Dual-core high end PC but I didn't have the scratch and needed something faster ASAP. This will do for a while. It came with 512 MB of DDR1 memory (RAM) which isn't much. In fact, it's the minimum recommended amount for Windows XP. Again, not a problem. It has 4 memory slots and can hold up to 4 GB of RAM so I purchased two 1 GB chips and one 512 MB chip from crucial.com and BAM, I've got 3 gigs of RAM. It can hold either PC2700 or PC3200 DDR1 memory. By the way, the 512 MB chip that it came with was PC3200 so that's the kind I added to it. It has an IBM branded motherboard with the Intel Springdale-G i865G chipset. The on board video is 64 MB, analog (VGA) and is OK but this thing has an unused 8x AGP video card slot. Sure, it's not the newer, faster, PCI-Express but it's still very good. I added a 512 MB 8x AGP, ATI Radeon video card that I got on sale at Best Buy and now I can play most if not all of the latest and greatest PC games. It came with a low end 230 Watt power supply that is made to fit this specific case and not exactly the same as an off the shelf power supply. No biggie, I got a really good deal on a Top Power 500 Watt power supply on newegg.com and popped it in there. Caution, this new, off the shelf, power supply's screw holes did NOT match the screw holes in the case and I had to rig it. I got a nice snug, secure fit but you must be careful and make SURE that the power supply is firmly attached to the metal case and grounded. There is not much room inside this case, especially with the extras that I have added and therefore the additional and longer wires that are on this new power supply are not easy to work with. I had to get very creative with cable management but airflow inside the case seems to still be acceptable. The cage that holds the primary hard drive and floppy drive clamps down right above where the power supply connects to the motherboard and it just barely fit, but it did fit with no forcing. The only reason it didn't fit perfectly is because this new power supply has a clamp on adapter that must be used in order for it to fit this motherboard. It came with Windows XP Home, even though the description said XP Pro. Not a problem for me, I happened to have an unused copy of XP Pro that I won a few years ago at a Microsoft event. XP Home might be a deal breaker for some, it just depends on what you're looking for. I have no doubt that I could run Vista Ultimate on this with no problems if I wanted to. I currently don't, want to. This thing also has 8 USB 2.0 ports with 2 in front and 6 in the back, not bad at all. All in all, I saved a ton of money, even with the extras I added, and now have a machine fast enough to last me two or three more years until I can afford a new high end beast. I hope this review helps some other geek out there as well as any newbies looking for a decent, cheap computer.
