I purchased the HP G4050 scanjet photo scanner on 11-07-07 from Overstock.com and after using it for a couple of weeks I'm now ready to give a review on it. 1. I contacted Overstock via Live Chat to see if the scanner is compatible with Windows Vista and they told me no. I saw some place via the internet that it is compatible so I shopped for a scanner on HP's website and saw that the G4050 is Vista compatible so I went ahead and ordered it. 2. The installation was so simple and it installed on Windows Vista perfectly. 3. I had an old photo album of my Mother-In-Law's and didn't want to destroy the page with 6 pictures to the page on it but then discovered the scanner separates the pictures for you so you can work with each picture individually without cropping them. The scanner is noisy like all the other scanners I have owned but that is the only drawback I see. 4. Remember to turn the scanner off after your through scanning. • Better than expected.

This scanner works perfectly. It's fast and easy to use. The quality of the scans are great. I do a lot of paper stuff that requires copies to be sent via e-mail. So being able to scan to PDF format is a big plus. I am also photographer, I don't scan many pictures but the few I did have to scan, where amazingly clear.

Worth the price for the screen-grab software alone. Does a good job scanning though it is difficult to reach the inside edge of columns in a bound book or magazines that cannot be sufficiently flattened. The leading edge of the case tends to drag, it would be better if the manufacturer would round the edges. Otherwise an OK buy.

  • Will not scan pages longer than 14".

As previous poster stated the scanner will not scan a document longer than 14". It will error out and give you a paper jam code, so there is no way to even scan the 14" of the document then scan the other side and paste. HP customer support was less than helpful. I was told they would look into changing the spec sheets and talking to their retail partners. After a year it is still being sold on many retailer sites as scanning up to 34". If you scan receipts, you are bound to scan one that is longer than 14"
