I have been looking at this lens for a couple month, the only thing that was holding me back was that it does not have any electronics (no auto focus, no EXIF info), but as I read more and more reviews about this lens, how people were raving about the picture quality of this lens, I took the plunge and decided to give a shot to it, why not?
After I got this lens, I was simply stunned by the picture quality I was getting, (of course, it took me sometime to figure out how to work with the manual focus) but once I got it, it was amazing!
I just rented a canon 85 1.2 L for the 3rd day now, after comparing the shots made between these 2 lens, I was more impressed with Rokinon version, because the 85 1.2 L was a lot heavier, and I wasn't really impressed with the auto focus, because since the depth of field at the wide open is so thin, there are a lot of miss focus, so for a bump from 1.4 to 1.2 and a not too perfect auto focus, I will not pay 9X the price of the Rockinon just for that little red ring.
My suggestion to you is, just buy it, you won't regret about it.
Bought this after lengthy research, Flicker, BandH, as well as other places on the net.
Its a manual lens so you will not like it if you are used to AF lenses.
But the glass and optical performance of this lens competes with lenses costing 4 maybe 5 times what this costs. Bokeh is silky smooth, tones and color reproduction absolutely natural.
With a 1.4f arp. the depth of field is extremely shallow, that it makes focusing actually very easy. You either in focus or you are not in focus. On a crop sensor you obviously not at 85 mm, but longer tele, for me its a 1.6 crop, so about 136mm.
So if you know how to operate manual lenses, and would love a semi long 1.4f lens for film&video work, take a long look at this one.

Was the product free of any manufacturer defects? Yes
It would've been nice if this lens would, at least, let the camera know what f-stop you are set at, but I can get around that.
This lens is clean and clear. I prefer a manual focus lens when doing portrait work because auto focus is dumb. It never knows to focus on the eyes. When using friends' lenses I've had to turn off auto focus anyway. So, this lens is ideal. The lack of auto-focus technology means you can get a nice piece of glass for a lot cheaper price.
Excellent lens with solid build. Actually it can be compared to lenses that cost several times more. The manual focusing ring are smooth and pleasant, image quality very good, sharpness at wide open very good. The bokeh and rendering of out of focus areas are soft and smooth...some thinks it is too smooth, but I like it. For those who find it difficult to use with small appertures, get a proper focusing screen for your camera and learn to shoot with narrow deapth of field...the problem it`s not about the lens. For a new lens this is the best buy ever..go get it!
Its hard to pull focus at 1.4 and I have to use the lcd on my canon 7d to get accurate focus so it takes time. one thing to keep in mind is that if you are shooting video with your dslr at 50 shutter in daytime at 1.4, everything will be super over exposed. Good lens for low light conditions but dont get it if you are shooting live events such as weddings because it takes time to find focus manually but if you are shooting staged stuff then you can get some nice shots with this. I hope Rokinon makes a 30mm 1.4 version cause ill buy it.
what is the procedure to take picture without body electronics. I had heard from someone that it dosint have contact with body(electronic Contacts). Then how it will take pictures smoothly. I am a learning photographer and i have some anxiety about this lens.dpstudio on Nov 26, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Hello, dpstudio. This is a manual focus lens. You would have to set your camera to manual mode and focus the lens manually by turning the focus knob. You would set the aperture on the lens itself. I hope this was helpful to you. Feel free to contact us with any further questions. Have a great day!
