  • Good for what it is.

Ok the negative reviews are from people who bought a DSLR and only know how to use auto focus.. which this lens clearly states its Manual focus only, so if you're to inept to turn the ring.. don't bother. Otherwise this lens is great for what it is a low cost 500mm manual focus lens. It's fairly lightweight although large in width but not to the point you can't use this without a mono/tripod during the day. And yes you can freehand shoot with this in light conditions I've not had any problems. Some have said nightshots with this are impossible.. they are not it just takes a lil practice and you'll do just fine with a tripod.

  • Good for price

This lens is neat.As the pictures show, it comes with a pleather case and plastic caps for both sides.I ordered this lens more for entertainment value and coolness factor - having a 500 mm lens lets you take pictures you normally wouldn't be able to take. Yes, it is a mirror lens, and yes the image quality is so-so - I wasn't expecting perfection for 120 dollar super telephoto lens.Manual focusing only, obviously. The focus ring movement is a little on the rigid side, but feels very solid and well made. I've only had this lens for a couple weeks, so I can't speak to the long term reliability, but so far the focusing has been solid. There are two version of this lens - f/8 and f/6.3. I chose the f/6.3 because i figured then I would be able to use a faster shutter speed to eliminate the nasty camera shake you get with a high-powered telephoto lens. The only drawback of this decision is a narrow depth of field. Typically this is not an issue unless you are trying to take action shots. If you are taking pictures of fairly stationary stuff, you can just slightly turn the focusing lens and snap multiple pictures, and you'll get at least one really good shot. It is really hard to see through the optical viewfinder whether or not the image is really in focus, but you can take a good guess, and if you use the method I described above, you should end up with decent shots. The optical quality of this lens is so-so, as I mentioned before - most likely because it's a mirror lens built with not-so-perfect mirrors, and what looks to be a plastic foreoptic. I have a Nikon D60, and when I use this lens with it, the pictures are about the same quality as my Sony Cybershot point n shoot. The real good thing about this lens is size. It is pretty darn compact for such a large zoom, and pretty light, considering what it does. At 500 mm you can just barely get by without a tripod, as long as it's a fairly bright day so that you can set shutter speed somewhere between 1/320 and 1/400 of a second. I typically end up using ISO 200. On a cloudy day, you can maybe get by by raising ISO slightly, but you'll be really dangerously close to blurry images, and i can only imagine it would be worse with the f/8.If you were to buy the f/8 version, you would be even more constrained, however you would probably not have to be so worried about things being in focus. It's depends on what you're using it for.

  • Great value

Having been on the lookout for a while for a Nikon mount mirror lens I took the plunge and bought one of these. Overstock handled the order promptly and efficiently and I received the lens in the UK in just over a week from placing the order. For the money, the performance of the lens is very good, in particular if used on a very bright & clear day. Obviously it won't match the image quality of a good multi element lens, but I've achieved some very good 8 x 10 prints using it. Main plus point is the convenience factor, its compact and light enough to carry when out walking. It also feels well put together. The wider aperture (f/6.3) makes the manual focussing easier on this lens than on many of its competitors.Whilst it is by no means a lens for beginners I'd have no hesitation in recommending it to any experienced photographer who was looking for a low cost and lightweight 500mm lens.

  • Rokinon 500 Lens for Nikon

I am very happy to write this review for the Rokinon 500mm lens for a Nikon camera that I purchased from Overstock.com. The lens is great and even beyond my expectations and the product was delivered promptly and packed to perfection. It's much better of course with a tripod, but the shots are awesome! Waiting for winter and the eagles to arrive!!
