My husband and I purchased this DVD player a year ago from a big box mart. It is now broken. Why? Who knows. The kids? Don't have any. Did we drop it, throw, kick it, abuse it in any way? No. It just broke down on us without any warning today. I went to put in a new movie from Netflix this afternoon and the door will not open, so no way to get a dvd in for viewing. The on/ off button keeps flashing standby and will not turn off no matter how many times we press the button. For the year that it did work the picture quality was excellent and the overall functionality was also excellent. How long are these things suppose to last?
I have quite a lot of burned media...and this player really couldn't handle it. Actually, to be fair, I'd have to say that this player handled 66% of my burned media...but for some reason couldn't handle a bunch of my older Sony DVD-R's (it would just show a "no disc" error). These same DVD's played perfectly in another brand's DVD player and my original Xbox. This lead to my returning the player. If you don't use a lot of burned media...buy this...but if you use lots of burned media...stay away.
This is a second DVD player, most likely to be used when grandchildren are here, however I was looking for DivX capability so I can watch tapes I have converted to DVD. It is very slim, so it does not take up much space, and has several options for connection to a TV. It has manual on /off and manual opening of the DVD tray, which is less convenient than our current DVD player. Overall, it will meet our needs for occasional use.
I bought this to try to save myself some work and not have to transcribe avi files to dvd. It works great and the only knock against it that I can find is there is apparently no eject on the control that comes with it and it has to be opened and closed by pressing the button on the front of the player or maybe I just have a defective controller but everything else on it works fine.
We've been really happy with this player so far. It works great, it's slim and easy to use. There was one of my burned DVDs that it wouldn't play, but that's my only very small complaint. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a simple DVD player for the home.
I originally ordered this product in Feb as a gift for my mother. It was refurbished and so I assumed no warranty. So when it broke after only 2 movies, I was extremely upset and regrettably wrote a less than nice letter to Overstock customer service. I was immediately contacted and informed that even their refurbished products are covered by warranty, and even before I could box up the broken one to send it back, my mother had already received a replacement. The replacement works perfectly. This kind of customer service deserves a gold star and repeat business and they certainly have mine. Oh, and the DVD player is exceptional for the price.
I love my Philips Slim Progressive Scan DVD w / DivX so much that I've just recently purchased a second one. The Sound, Picture Quality and ease of use are a consumers dream come true. This is one of the best products I've ever purchased and I'm happy to say I am now a loyal Philips Brand customer. I have recommended the product to others and they too have been pleased with their purchases. Keep up the great work Philips!!!!
Bought this as a Christmas gift to replace an old DVD player. So far so good. The picture is crisp and everything works fine. Hookup was easy and directions for use were pretty easy too. All in all, we are happy with this purchase.
i bought this dvd player in april of 05. it worked great until the middle of april of 2010. i was dissapointed when i quit because i was a great piece of electronics. i will miss it greatly.
I thought I would take a chance on a "refurbished" DVD player and frankly, I wish I hadn't. It works fine, but is really noisy at times. It has a constant hum that is annoying. Also, when the unit is off, the red "standby" button is lit. That kind of bugs me. I don't like lights on when an appliance is "off". I'll keep it, simply because I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it. But I wish I had shopped around a little more. The remote control is difficult to get used to, it has buttons in odd places and there is no open/close button. Overall, it is a fair product, but I am a little disappointed in my purchase.
I got the dvd player for christmas so i can play my favorite dvd that is only sold in german, but can be made into english. It worked for a while then one day it just went crazy and stopped working. We sent it back and they said that they'd either fix it IF THEY CAN, but if they can't they would send me my money back. I received my money back. It's not worth trying.
I wanted a player that was able to play all regions, and though this comes in region 1 only, it is very easily changed with a simple code typed into the remote. It is working great as a region free player (although we have only had it for less than 1 week).
Technically speaking the DVD player works great and is easy to use, however when it came in the box, I had to clean the entire thing. It seems like it had been used before and the remote control had food stuck to it, which was disgusting. I was not aware that this was a refurbished DVD player or a used one as I do not remember it being on the description. I did not hassle with sending it back since it was just something we needed for the kids play room. It was cheap and not worth the hassle.
Easiest DVD player I ever had. I attached it, plugged it in and off it went. It takes up very little room.
i needed something simlpe and easy to use for my bedroom. i really like this dvd player. its refurbished but under warrinty so i am not worried at all. i love overstock.com!
What a great pricetag, and ours is working just fine. My only complaint has been that the whole system seems to be defaulted to French and we have to change things to English via the machine's more cmoplicated menu, not the movie's menu, everytime we use it. I have no idea why it's set up that way and I know it's not standard, but apparently it happens. Luckily, Overstock is great about customer service and if I wanted I could probably just exchange it. Alas, I'm lazy. ;) On the plus side, I was feeling, yep, lazy again and watched the entirety of "Open Season" with my 2 yr old the other day in French and enjoyed it just as much. Maybe it can be his fourth language. ;)
It came in good time, it's in place & it's working.
We are still learning how to use all of the features. I do not like the remote as the buttons are in strange places, but overall we like the product.
This is a good product for around $50. I bought it for the many formats that it will play, especially Divx CD & DVD's. I would recommend it to anyone who wants something that performs consistently and doesn't need the top-of-the-line product that costs 6-10x as much.
Excellent product , quality and feauture for low price .
