This DVD player is EXCELLENT for upscaling normal DVDs or upscaling regular TV-quality digital video files.I tested it using some low-quality video, and it upscaled it well enough that it looked like I was watching 720p HD broadcast television. Nobody is going to mistake it for blu-ray, but it looked MUCH better than the original source file did on my computer. The player quickly noticed when I plugged in a USB drive, and it was easy to navigate through the folders on the drive and play files. My only complaint is that it does not recognize HD video files. I tried playing a 720p copy of a show I recorded, and it refused to play the file, saying that the "resolution was not supported" or something like that. But since since this does such a good job of upscaling and since it takes so much longer to burn 720p video, I'll just stop using HD for my video purposes.Overall it's a GREAT player and I couldn't be happier!
Very convenient and inexpensive device. Works perfect for couple years

Despite being billed as a "multi-region" player, the unit I received was locked to region 1 and had to be unlocked. The process was simple enough, but I should've been spared the effort and received what I'd paid for. That aside, this somewhat infamously problematic player (which explains all the refurbs) has worked well for us ? and in particular, our young children. We've been able to play all the region 2 DVDs sent by the grandparents overseas, not to mention the region 1s we already own. (That region-locking even exists anymore is a bit of a farce, but I suppose this isn't the appropriate forum for that gripe.) Two FAT-32 formatted USB sticks (2GB, 4GB) have worked well in the USB slot; the only time I had problems was when I formatted a stick in FAT-32 in OS X and not XP. I've been converting the recordings on our DVR to DivX or XviD format, and so far all of them have played without complications. I wish there were support for more codecs and a better file browser, but perhaps that's nitpicking. Incidentally, the player also boasts a "Windows Media" logo, but I haven't had the courage or inclination to try out our video files in the Borg's proprietary format. What the DVP5990/37x boils down to is a decent player that can handle any DVD and any DivX-formatted media file. Which is pretty handy if you don't want to invest all the time and money in a home network/media server-type setup. And it's even possible to flash these players with custom firmware to give them a few more features and remove some of Philips' lamebrained limitations, such as max. 14-character filenames.
we lived in UK for a few years and needed a multi-region. I bought another Philips which I thought I could change to Region 0 but it can't. This fits the bill and our old pHllips is off to my dad who needs a good HD upscale one anyway.Came promptly and works well. Remote is a bit small, but not a problem.
Worked right out of the box, looks good and plays movies from all countries.
HiI love my DVD I just plugged it in pop in the my favoriet britt comedy and have had no problemsit's been about a month it works great no punching codes . The audio and video are in sync and all the other extra gadgets you can use are a bonus. The price is reasonable I look everywhere and this was the best.
Video was OK, but could not get the audio to work. I wish they would test the "refurbished" items before they sell them again.I have ordered another to replace this one. The packing and documentation got thrown out before we got the AAA batteries for the remote, and didn't find out about the problem until after trash day. If the replacement works, I will be returning the first one.
I bought this product after reading the reviews and checking many others. My main interest was the multi-zone feature to watch movies purchased outside the US. After watching 2 movies, it stopped working. It stops after 20 minutes, freezes and then does not read the DVD.Philips did not do a good job refurbishing. I didn't return it on time as my husband threw away the box when it worked the first couple of times and now, I don't want to even bother. Very dissapointing.
