We had been using a Toshiba hard drive recorder for a couple years. Loved it, but it's analog tuner became essentially useless after recent digital changeover. We have our cable split with one going to cable box and the other direct to this DVR. It's a different line-up, but all the stations we normally record are there. We had 2 Philips HDTV's in other rooms with raw cable going to them and hoped we'd receive the same signal, which we did. Now we don't have to have cable box on station we want to record. Only drawbacks are the small remote buttons and the inability to put title on shows we record weekly. Just have to look at date and thumbview.

This unit replaced a Samsung Digital Converter which we bought almost a year ago because the stations in our area were converting to digital ahead of the cutover date. We paid almost $300 for the Samsung unit. This Philips offers so so so so so much more in features and value and usefulness at at price that is far more fair. Even the digital reception is far superior. I consider myself lucky to have been able to purchase this Philips, so lucky, in fact, that I purchased another from Overstock only 3 weeks later, to use in our camper van. Thank you thank you thank you, Overstock!!!!!

I love this machine- the quality, the features, the capacity. But I'm not able to record channel 2.1 (our PBS) using the timer, even though I can record 2.1 manually, and I can record any other channel on the timer. Bizarre, even Philips can't figure it out. I don't know if this is a design error or a failure of my machine.

This is my first HDD dvr and I have only had it three weeks, so I cannot say how durable and reliable it will be. There have been no malfunctions so far, and after reading the manual I think it's relatively simple to understand the basic features without difficulty. The picture quality: For recordings it is very good and the playback picture quality of DVDs (and DVD-Rs) is also exceptional and crystal clear. Having a hard drive is admittedly very convenient, I may never be able to do without that again. However, the minuses almost make me wish I'd bought another Panasonic when my last one died. The remote for the Philips unit is not very intuitive, plus the letter/numerical buttons are so tiny it makes it difficult to key in program titles unless you're positioned right in front of the machine. I can't imagine what trouble a guy with large fingers would have with it. It's also a rather laborous process to just get to the "edit" functions...the menus are not very well organized. This aspect of the process annoys me more than it may others. The only other real minus is the live television picture quality through the Philips device (on HDMI) is ghastly...unwatchable. I have to switch to my TV/Cable input to get a good live picture. My Panasonic had exceptional live picture quality from the HDMI output, so I was quite astonished. It's my only comparison, as I've only owned these two brands of DVRs.I cannot say I recommend this unit without reservations until I see how durable and reliable it is (the Panasonic was VERY unreliable and died after 2 years). Reviews I read when researching this product seem very positive about it's durability, and this is a premium with me, and would mitigate some of the annoyances I detailed above.

I already own two of the 80 gig hdd dvd recorders from Philips, which are still performing great. The choice of this unit was easy. Overstock.com made this choice a great value. I have checked other online resellers and Overstock had the best price. The condition of my unit is excellent, it looks brand new. I am still learning to use all of the features because they have been updated from my previously owned units. For example live tv pause, rewind, and record were automatic and one button record, on the new unit these actions must be selected. I do see the improvement of this in unnecessary hard drive use when this unit is turned on. You need to look no further for a dvd recorder with hard drive. This is the best unit to buy and Overstock.com is the best place to buy it.

my husband owns one, I purchased one for myself. We love them so much that I ordered an extra one and put it aside in case we cannot replace them in the future. I cannot live without the hard drive .to record for future use or just to share some tidbit with someone and then erase. The picture quality is excellent .

This is a nearly perfect product. It worked first time I connected it up. Antenna into DVR and out to DTV converter, then on to TV. This allows viewing one channel and recording another. It has internal digital tuner, can record shows from different channels, and has a very nice menu to do so.With this box, you can record one show and watch another simultaneously, a point they don't stress very much. Can record only one at a time, but that's a minor flaw. It is easy to use and produces great output, both video and audio.Unlike some others, it doesn't need cable, dish or other subscription. TIVO costs $13/month, this one has no such requirement.I wish they were more available and advertised more. I did quite a bit of a searching to find it, but have already recommended it.Recorded shows can be saved to DVD for future use, or recorded directly onto hard disk or DVD. At lowest resolution, it can record 200 hours, and picture is still great, much better than from VCR.I cannot recommend it highly enough. And I am glad to see someone (Philips) recognizes that not everyone is being held hostage by the cable/dish providers.

Exactly what I needed, a DVR that I don't have to pay my cable company $10/month to use. The unit was relatively easy to set up, but it took me awhile to figure out the remote and the setup process. I'm still having to refer to a rather thick user manual that is poorly organized, and some of the steps are difficult to follow. The DVR records and plays back all my favorite shows perfectly, and I connected my Sony video tape deck so that I can record to DVD all my old VHS tapes. I am one happy customer!
Was a little apprehensive about purchasing a refurbished unit, but the price was too awesome not to take a chance. Unit arrived quickly & complete with all user manuals & hookup info - it looked brand new. I am not a "manual reader" and the menus are so simple I have not needed to use yet. Absolutely no problems with the DVDR at all - it works perfectly. Would highly recommend.

This recorder has performed beyond my expectations. I have owned several DVD recorders, including a Toshiba which this one seems to emulate, and none has performed as well. Audio and video quality are fantastic and the features are just what I like. That it has a built-in tuner makes it worth its weight in gold! I've only had it a couple of weeks so I don't know how it will perform in the long run. However, I did purchase a 4-year service plan so I figure I'm covered for a while. Even with the cost of the service plan, there is no way you can beat this quality for the price. Refurbished has never been a problem for me, and this machine proves the truth of that. I highly recommend this awesome machine!!!

I have had a Panasonic DVR for 5 years and was very satisfied with it. I purchased this unit because I was concerned that my Panasonic would fail someday and I occassionally have two programs I want to record. This product has performed beyond expectations. The menus are very user friendly. The remote is easy to use and has features that are not available on my Panasonic. I liked this product so much that I bought a second one for my daughter. I have discovered that the hard drive is a standard PC hard drive. It is very easy to replace if the current hard drive should fail. Also, it can be replaced with a larger 250 GB hard drive.

This excellent unit is truly powerful and capable. It's a real bargain if its price does not climb . 160 GB hard disk recorder, an ATSC digital tuner and a DVD recorder. Recording TV programsI use a roof antenna, and receive both analog and digital TV signals. Programming to record TV shows is very similar to programming a VCR manually. There is no automatic programming system, but it's really not that hard to do manually. It records HD signals as SD (standard definition). I use an HDMI cable between this unit and my TV.This is a very nice product. Perfect video copies of anything on digital TV

I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS DVD RECORDER. I OWN 5 DVD RECORDERS, AND THIS IS THE BEST ONE OVER ALL. I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY HARD DISC RECORDERS AT ANY OF THE RETAILERS IN MY CITY, OR ANY OF THE NEARBY CITIES. IF YOU WANT ONE, YOU HAD BETTER GET ONE NOW. I THINK THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED MAKING THEM.

I applaud Philips for being one of the first to bring a product of this type to the market at an affordable price. The interface and functions are notably primitive, the hard drive recording control is no way up to par on what can be done with the boxes you can rent from the cable and satellite companies, at least from my experience, but it will get the job done. I bought one for my parents and they are relatively happy but I am hesitating to buy a second. I really like the recording features but it seems if I wait a little longer much better ones will come out. I'd much rather own the panasonic DVD recorders but I'm afraid these are also not mature enough yet, lots of problems with my last and I had to return it. Anyway, so far so good... the Philips unit does work, it just doesn't make you feel very warm and fuzzy, more like a caveman with a remote control instead of a club.

This is a reconditioned product, but you can't find them in the US in new condition. One channel doesn't come through the cable well enough to record, but everything else works well. The first one I pruchased did not work at all, but the return went smoothly. I would consider another of these hard drive recorders if they became available. I would prefer new, but would try the reconditioned again.

how can i start to discribe my satisfaction, with this product .they are too meny .first one i love is that i can conect a flash card with hundreds of songs and play them in it with my stereo or throught the tv sound. second. i can pause live tv any time i want with the push, of button. third i can play dvx movies and dvds with incredible picture quality as well i can connect a flash card with pictures and whatch them on my television .forth i can use the hard drive to record my survillance camera for up to seven straight days if i want to.and the timer is very easy to set up to record my favorites programs. the clock works fine for me it sets itself if you get the PBS station, with antena only. with cable it didnot work for me. it also has a button in the remote to direct record from the dvd to hard drive or viceversa of course as longest the dvd is not copy right protected. all your personal videos can be copy to the hard drive and from the hard drive to a blank dvd. the menu is very easy to navigate
also it gives information about the program that you are whatching by pressing info in the remote and if you are whatching a dvd movie the info button give you more options such as sound modes, close caption modes , 3 levels of zoom, chapters, repeat modes,
ok there is only one down side, but it doesnot realy bother me, that much that it does not have, a DTS decoder built in it. but the dolby prologic is very good when conected with the optical digital outputto my surround sound receiver . it also has a digital and analog tuner. i would highly recomend this product because it has so meny aplications to use it for . i got this product now for about a month and i just loved
