This is a nearly perfect product. It worked first time I connected it up. Antenna into DVR and out to DTV converter, then on to TV. This allows viewing one channel and recording another. It has internal digital tuner, can record shows from different channels, and has a very nice menu to do so.With this box, you can record one show and watch another simultaneously, a point they don't stress very much. Can record only one at a time, but that's a minor flaw. It is easy to use and produces great output, both video and audio.Unlike some others, it doesn't need cable, dish or other subscription. TIVO costs $13/month, this one has no such requirement.I wish they were more available and advertised more. I did quite a bit of a searching to find it, but have already recommended it.Recorded shows can be saved to DVD for future use, or recorded directly onto hard disk or DVD. At lowest resolution, it can record 200 hours, and picture is still great, much better than from VCR.I cannot recommend it highly enough. And I am glad to see someone (Philips) recognizes that not everyone is being held hostage by the cable/dish providers.
Exactly what I needed, a DVR that I don't have to pay my cable company $10/month to use. The unit was relatively easy to set up, but it took me awhile to figure out the remote and the setup process. I'm still having to refer to a rather thick user manual that is poorly organized, and some of the steps are difficult to follow. The DVR records and plays back all my favorite shows perfectly, and I connected my Sony video tape deck so that I can record to DVD all my old VHS tapes. I am one happy customer!
I have had a Panasonic DVR for 5 years and was very satisfied with it. I purchased this unit because I was concerned that my Panasonic would fail someday and I occassionally have two programs I want to record. This product has performed beyond expectations. The menus are very user friendly. The remote is easy to use and has features that are not available on my Panasonic. I liked this product so much that I bought a second one for my daughter. I have discovered that the hard drive is a standard PC hard drive. It is very easy to replace if the current hard drive should fail. Also, it can be replaced with a larger 250 GB hard drive.
Rarely do I find a product that lives up to its CLAIMS & reviews. As a self-proclaimed intelligent consumer, I pride myself in taking the time and effort to educate myself before making any purchasing decision. In this case, It was necessary to start literally at the basics and build my knowledge base from there. I have not been dissapointed! I became interested in this product, the Phillips DVDR3576H, as it had the features in which I was most interested. The 160GB hard disk is large enough to allow temporary story of the programs stored on my satellite box DVR until I am ready to record to DVD. The editing features allow me just enough freedom to edit out unwanted commercials and such. The unit easily interfaced with my existing system and does not interfere with my wife's ability to do what she does. The instructions seem very intuitive to me, and the unit was installed, up and recording in less than 30 minutes. I am very satisfied with this product thus far and I am anticipating much use of it in the future. I would recommend this product to others.
I purchased this recorder for my sister as a gift. I own one and really love it. She is just as happy with hers as I am with mine.
Unit was easy to install and initialize. User interface took some time figure out but once familiarized it works great. Playing DVDs is automatic. Setting up the record timer took some practice and naming the recordings was a pain. Playing programs recorded to the 160 GB HD straight forward. Skipping commercials and programs segments worked fine. Unit is quiet and responsive to the remote control at some distance and angle.
Yes I own the old model (DVDR3455H) that records the old analog stations. I wanted to record the new digital channels because I have an antenna on my house as apposed to cable or dish. I was happy with my old Philips but am surprised to see that they have made it easier to program tv shows. There are some differences that took some getting used to but over all I am "tickled pink". It also plays some cd's & dvd's that the old one would not. No, it does NOT record shows in HiDef. but I don't think there is one that does right now. Be warned that if it looses power longer than 30 seconds, It will loose its program & clock setting. This is the best option over a TIVO that I know about, & you cannot record DVD's on a TIVO.
the door to the dvd side frequently won't open so we are unable to use the product

I needed this exact kind of item but it was hard to find one in current manufacture, as they had fallen out of popularity. Overstock had one, and it works well. That's it.

Very useful product, a breeze to use. Recorded programs look great, the features are a plus. I reccomend to anyone looking for a DVR that rocks.
I bought a bunch of Philips dvd recorders DVDR3576H for myself and other people. The quality of the pictures is stunning and most of all the units are able to record on the hard drive VHS tape videos and videos from other sources. The most impressing for me was that I was able to hook my camera canon T1I and record the home videos I taped on to the hard drive and then dubbed them on to dvds. The only minor deficiency I noticed is that the unit cannot record 2 shows at a time. But the overall quality of the unit is very good.
This is not a good product for someone who is not very tech savy. The Geek Squad hooked it up for me and said I would need to read the instruction book for further details about how to operate it. I did that and I have been unable to do anything but play a DVD. I tried to record a program on the HDD and then play it and nothing was there. I tried again and I got only snow. I have cable but no box. This may be a great product for people who know a lot about electronics but that is not me.
This was the second Philips DVR / DVD Recorder which I have purchased. The first was bought new by us when it was still in production. After using it for over a year, I was so impressed that I wanted another one. While the units currently sold at Overstock.com are returns/reconditioned, the first one I received from them seems to function flawlessly (just like the factory original). I just wish that Overstock.com gave a full one year warranty on returned/reconditioned electronics, since the unit is supposed to be as good as new. 30 days just isn't long enough for something that is like new.
I do not have a lot of experience with DVRs, well, this was my first. I definitely recommend it. I have not used all of the features, and it is more complicated to use than the VCR it replaced, but I am extremely pleased with the quality. I just have antenna service, and the tuner picks up the signal beautifully. You can watch TV while recording a different show, no problems. No video equipment is easy to use anymore, you do have to spend some time figuring out the manual, however the Philips website is excellent and helped me quickly figure out what I had done wrong the one time I needed it. I have not tried recording to a DVD disk.
I have been looking for a HDD for a long time. I found that it is so easy to use.It is loaded with features. I can't think of a thing that has been left out.The product guide has all the information to operate. In the past I found that I have to back on line to check out information but not this time.I was so pleased with the Philips HDD that I ordered one for my son, who is just as pleased as I am.
Was shipped expediently & received in great condition--since my MAIN concern is "Time-Shifting", the DVR is what I concentrate on-feature-wise. I'm LOVIN' recording to Hard Drive & watching LIVE TV simultaneously--in addition to doing away with the bothersome VHS tapes, which break, jam & are a pain-in-the butt. Digital Video Recording is the "way to go" & this Phillips DVR "delivers".
I bought this DVD player and recorder for its digital tuner card and HD recorder. Both are working fine for me for about one month. The recorded quality on HD is very good. Digital tuner gets almost all the channels from my comcast cable. I am very satisfied with this purchase.Th eonly negative i sthat it does not have EPG elctronic programm guide.
This is probably the only hard-drive PVR with an ATSC tuner available at this time. It is much quicker to boot than a Panasonic DMR EZ28 that I also have, and the picture is notably sharper. As probably noted by others, there is no way to give names to programmed recordings ahead of time, so you much be able to select them from the thumbnails--would be nice if the over-the-air info was embedded into the recording. Otherwise a great unit.
Overall very pleased. Very hard to fine a DVR these days without a monthly subscription. Only DVRs with subscriptions (TiVo & Direct TV DVR) and DVD recorders (which this device has also) available these days. ***PROS: *Can record to internal hard-drive (like a DVR without the monthly subscription fee, though works like a VCR - you have to set the start/stop time) *No monthly subscription fees (like TiVo has) *Relatively Inexpensive ***CONS: *DVR (hard drive mode) is a little noisy, but you get used to it pretty quickly) * No TV show listings menu (of course that is why there is no monthly subscription fee either!) *Discontinued product ***TIPS *To avoid clock randomly reseting (that seems to be working for me now): Turn "Auto Clock" setting to "Off" *To be able to watch a different channel then you are recording, you'll need to hook it up to the component in part of your TV (some remotes have the "TV/VCR" button to switch back and forth - that's the component toggle I'm talking about)
It works great! Just exactly what we had hoped for.
