Upon first looks, this sleek piece of modern necessity looks like it has it all. polished finish with chrome accents, minimalistic form and size, a simple amount of buttons, and just enough connectivity. after setting it up with my tv and surround sound system, i powered this player up to hear a rather annoying sound. nothing too much to worry about at first. the brand screensaver came up brightly and crisp, with a easily viewed status message. i place a dvd in that i know has incredible sound and visual appeal, and was very happy with the colors and sound being translated by this machine. but we return to the noise. if anyone has ever had a playstation 2 and used it as a dvd player, its the same type of annoying sound that the ps2 makes while playing a movie. a constant droning from the system reading the disc. luckily , the perfect volume on my setup blurs it away, but on lower volumes its faint and annoyingly in the background. the next issue is the remote. its a bit clumsy and oddly weighted, and , this is THE most annoying thing about this product overall, the buttons need a hefty amount of pressure to operate. and the fast forward and chapter skip are operated by the same button, which leads to skipping or rewinding an entire scene when you wanted to just fast forward or rewind a bit. i reccomend getting a universal remote and this should solve all your problems. or at least mine.
It took nearly 2 weeks for this to arrive. I was aware this was a refurbished product so my expectations were not too high. I came securely packaged. I installed it into my current system. The disc platform is rather flimsy but otherwise it looks ok. It came with a manual and I played with the setup until I got a configuration I was happy with. I was looking for an upconvert to go with the new 42"LCD HDTV. I bought it as a go between until the the Blueray/HD competition shakes out. I did not notice a whole lot increased picture clarity but it is difficult without a side by side comparision to my old set up. I played about 4 movies in it when it suddenly would not read any disc I put in it. I received a constant "no disc" error with DVDs I had played earlier. I went online for an immediate fix and found the usual culprit is a dirty optical reader. I used a cleaning disc I had and that seemed to alleviate the problem for now. You would think when they refurbish, the optical reader would be cleaned. For the price, I can't complain too much. The old axiom, "you get what you pay for" comes to mind.
I love it so far. Great DVD player with nice features. Would recommend to anyone. Refurbished items are a good value for anyone who can't afford to buy at retail prices. Think of it as the product you are receiving had been tested and tried to make sure it works correctly. Some new products don't go through this kind of testing.
I was looking for a cheap DVD player. And this fits the bill, although I probably could have gone cheaper with another brand. The good: Plays DVD's pretty well. I had a few badly scratched DVD's from the library which I thought would be uplayable, but I was able to play them on this player. My previous player would not have been able to play it. The Bad: 1. It's a bit slow loading up. 2. It did not come with a user's guide; only a quick start up sheet. I called customer assistance to have one sent to me. They said they'd send one and then a week later they called to say they couldn't send one unless I sent them a copy of the sales receipt. Even after I provided them with documentation, they said it wasn't good enough. Instead they directed me to their WEB site where I downloaded it. 3. There is no button on the remote to open the the DVD carriage. That was one of the reasons I NEEDED the user guide. Fortunately, the guide indicated that to open the carriage you need to press the "stop" button for several seconds.
great price, quality pictures, very happy with this purchase.
This was a good buy while I wait for blue ray players to come down in price. It plays movies I hve stored on usb drives without a hitch.
- How did the image on site compare with the actual product? same
- Was the product free of any manufacturer defects? yes
- Please tell us about the quality of the product. This was a good buy while I wait for blue ray players to come down in price
We purchased this DVD player on April 30, 2010. It broke on June 30- although it had worked beautifully for the 60 days we had it. We are now trying to collect a receipt from Overstock that is acceptable to Philips (the one we have is not acceptable) which will allow them to hopefully extend the warranty that had already expired before we purchased the machine (I do get that- it is Overstock, afterall). If Philips agrees to extend our warranty then they may send us a new machine. Seriously though, only 60 days? The Overstock warranty was only good for 30 days- I think it is a better idea to buy your electronics from *****- at least their return policy is effortless.
very pleased with this purchase. lots of value with this. i have a huge selection of regular dvd's they play at a great quality on my 47" vizio. i bought one for my parents to use on their 50" plasma.
Had some problems with a CD being locked but an email to Phillips, which was answered within 24 hours, cleared up the problem and another that was of my own making. The picture and sound are excellent and I am very happy with the purchase.
Great machine. Wonderful for upgrading older DVDs. The remote control is not the greatest, especially when trying to open and close the dvd tray. For use on a second tv it is great for the money.
I was able to set up within 30 minutes- I love the minimal space sleek design. So far works great- great price point. I will most likely order another one for my other TV's in the house.
This machine comes with hdmi output and will play almost any DVD, CD you throw at it short of Blu-Ray.
The quality of the product is great! The picture is so clear. I would definitely recommend this product to my friends.
I just bought one and really like it. there was no set up involved...plug and play. It plays .avi files i've downloaded and i plan to play .avi movies from my external hard drive via usb port. totally recommend it... a coworker recommended it to me....
everything takes forever to boot - it's like this thing runs on a delay. you hit a button, nothing happens, and then like 4 seconds later it does what you wanted. really annoying. it plays okay, but is very frustrating.
the machine is a nuissance to set up, almost a puzzle. once done. you never wanna change it! the quality of the picture and sound are very good.
I have only used the product a few times since purchasing it and have found that it does not "like" all DVD's and needs to be restarted during operation.
I am very pleased with the DVD player but I wish they would have put on the description that it did not come with a remote
I bought this as an interim DVD player until technology decides which way it's going BluRay and HDDVD. I got stung with the VHS // Beta war in the 80's. I'm very happy with the way it enhances the standard DVD. The only complaint I have is that it is a little slow to load. Well worth the money. Very Pleased!
Title says it all! Response time is a little slow but the picture is fantastic!
