Early Review
 from Texas,  Oct 10, 2010

Although I've had this unit for less than a month, I can tell it's wa-a-a-ay too much of a machine than I need. Its set-up and controls lack the ease I would think it would. It should be 'just put in a tape or DVD and push a button to go'. No-o-o-o. It's set this and set that. Then go back and set this other thing. After all that, hope it works. I still can't figure how to set up over-the-air TV channels. Yup. Have an antenna plugged in the RF IN connector (I'm not a newby, but I seem to be with this machine). I'm sure I'll figure it out, but one would expect it to be a little less complicated. I'm rating it 4 (out of 5), as I'm sure I have yet to scratch the surface of its features and will eventually figure it out. Otherwise, it'll turn out to be a very expensive clock! The instructions seem to be written BY someone who is VERY familiar with the workings. Not written FOR a person starting from scratch with a totally new, complicated piece of equipment. I welcome other feedback to this.

Good Duplicator
from Marietta, GA,  Oct 3, 2010

I have dozens of VHS tapes of programs I recorded off-the-air of stuff I love. Wanted to save space by consolidating them to DVD. This recorder does the job very well. I just put in a blank DVD, insert the tape, select COPY and begin. I record to DVD in SP (2 hr) mode. When the disc is full, the recording and the tape stops. I can then insert another disc to continue the recording where I left off -- very handy. For a monitor I use an old 3.5" color portable TV that is not good for much else these days. I've copied to about 30 DVDs so far with no problems at all. The menu system for naming the disc is also very easy to use.

Meets Expectations
from Davis, CA,  Sep 3, 2009

So far I am very happy with this DV-R/VHS combo. No problems setting it up and using it. Previous reviews were really helpful, so I've had no surprises with positives/negatives of the product features. Great price from getting a reconditioned unit, otherwise, I may not have bought it. Built-in digital TV converter works noticeably better than my old converter box. So basically I've replaced three components (DVD, VCR, digital converter box) and power cords with just one! I bought DVD+RW discs which work fine, but would recommend DVD-RAM discs since according to the instructions, have more functionality in video editing, and simultaneous record and playback capability. I can record and then edit video discs straight into my PC (with Video Lab) with no problem.

It has issues ...
from Boise, ID,  Jun 22, 2009

I like this product very much. The digital tuner allows me to program recordings for digital, over-air signals now that I could not with my previous VCR. It does have some shortcomings though. One is that it automatically adjusts the size of the incoming signal which means that sometimes for a 'normal' broadcast (4:3 ratio), there are black bars on the top, bottom and both sides of the image. Also, it does not allow you to record from a digital signal onto a tape. You MUST record onto a DVD. This perplexes me, as I was able to record from the digital converter box onto my old VCR tapes. If these are deal-breakers, avoid this product. Other than these issues, the product does work well.

Stay away
from Atlanta, GA,  May 15, 2012

Product arrived in a timely fashion and was packed well. Picture quality was GREAT. Unit froze frequently and within six months stopped working altogether. I do not recommend this product nor would I purchase another.

back in the day...
from Cape Codder,  Apr 24, 2012

i bought this back when tv went digital so i could get channels without cable. it worked well especially recording tv shows, but especially for recording old video tapes to dvd. this is a re-conditioned unit, so it may have had defects. the customer service was mixed bag: some directed me well and answered all my ?'s, but others told me the unit was toast and wanted me to send it in for $ervice. i was able to get it working again miraculously (don't know what i did). now i use it rarely as i have cable and have no idea how to hook it up.

  • How did the image on site compare with the actual product? good
  • Was the product free of any manufacturer defects? not sure
  • Please tell us about the quality of the product. good

Too complicated for my use
from Phoenix AZ,  Jul 8, 2011

My first impression was "they didn't know how to build them good so they built them heavy. After picking up the 100 pages manual I added "and complicated". It appears it will do far more than I need it to do which is to convert VHS to DVD.

DVD/VHS recorder
from Detroit Michigan,  Dec 28, 2010

The Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK VHS/ DVD Recorder was in excellent condition, with no sign of having been refurbished. The downloaded User manual enabled me to get it connected and set-up, but it would have been nice to have had the original printed copy, as it quite expensive to print it on an ink-jet printer. The performance in play-back mode has ben excellent.

Although i have not taken the time to find all of the bells and whistles i am finding the recorder what it was advertised to be and so far having excellent luck with the unit. the review comments i used were very valuable as i had picked another machine until i read the ratings on both. I am very pleased with the unit that i have..

Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK VHS/ DVD Recorder (Refurb)
from Indianapolis, IN,  Sep 24, 2009

This DVD /VHS Recorder is great. Especially for the money. It is more durable than the LG 897T that I bought elsewhere...I had to send it end for repair after only 60 days of use. This player is a lot easier to use. I like everything about it. The only short coming is that it does not have an "EJECT" button on the remote. Otherwise I am very satisfied with the product.

Performance just OK
 Aug 17, 2009

I bought this unit as a legacy drive mostly so I could still have access to my VHS collection. I own a number of Panasonic DVD and BlueRay players and have found them all to be very good values and easy to operate. This unit is very similar in operation and also a good value (especially at an Overstock discount). My only disappointment is that the picture quality tends to be less than expected, even through HDMI. I get the feeling that Panasonic figured that anyone interested in VHS wasn't interested in great picture quality. If you watch on a smaller screen this machine is probably terrific.

Nice
 from WNY,  Aug 10, 2009

Great machine. Has lots of features I'll never use. Cool features that are good if you don't have a computer...Of course then you wouldn't be reading this review...Can copy pics off jump drives or memory cards and burn them to DVD..Neat. It is easy to use though not intuitive. You do need the manual at first, even for basic functions. After the first few times you should be good though. No bad burns so far! My last machine that's all I ever got. (Liteon=lights off). Not many buttons on the front = Awesome for toddlers.

Good machine. Lots of inputs/outputs. Has lots of capabilities, so the operating instruction booklet is 99 pages and can take some studying.
