Simply press a button and One-Touch 2-Way Copying lets you transfer material from VHS tapes to DVD discs and vice versa. This means you can easily record your entire video library onto DVD for a collection that takes up much less space. During tape-to-DVD copying, there's also a handy function that reads recording start (VISS) signals on a tape and automatically creates thumbnails on the DVD discs.

worked great for a month

boomercub from Oregon, Jul 2, 2009

I liked this unit a lot, and didn't find it too complicated to operate or set up. But, after about a month, it just completely broke down. I got a little warning when the sound quality changed ( a loud buzz when I started to play a DVD). I turned it off to see if it was coming from the TV instead. Then it wouldn't turn back on. The open/shut button didn't even work, so my Netflix DVD is trapped. We'll see how good the warranty is, if I can find the original invoice.

DVR for the first time buyer

laurijohann from Narragansett, RI, Oct 6, 2008

I have been encouraged to buy a DVR for some time by friends but have been doing fine with a balky 10 year old VCR. But I had to acknowledge the quality of play of the DVR over the VCR. So I decided to jump into the 21st century and buy this Panasonic unit because of the DVD/VCR and digital camera card slot recording capability for my digital camera as well as being a Panasonic user in the past. The hook-up was easy when I found the right page of instruction, it was not page one of the hundred page booklet as I had thought, and the player has many more features than my old VCR. I am still learning those features but have found the search mode a very helpful tool when viewing DVD's prerecorded or my own from the TV. I chose this combination DVD/VCR because I have so many tapes I will record onto disc and save into less space, meaning room on the shelf for more!

Some drawbacks

Anonymous from West Palm Beach, FL, Aug 15, 2008

You have to turn the unit off in order to record. If it turns itself off, you won't get a recording. I have missed several shows because I let the timer turn it off. There is no commercial skip on the VCR. You have to just fast forward. But, for the money, it is satisfactory.
