I've had this drive for a little while and it works great. I can't use the included software, as all my machines are Linux based, but I wasn't worried about that anyway. I've transferred files back and forth on my Ubuntu desktop and netbooks and my Fedora server with no issues. For cheap, portable external storage, this is a great deal.I also use it to play media files on the WDTV media player. It's great to not have to worry with fooling around plugging in another AC adaptor, as this drive doesn't have one.
The product mentioned as refurbished but it's just like new. The product performance is awsome and the best thing about it is, no need to install anything; just plug it in and it starts working. Product packaging was good to take care of wear and tear of the product. Delivery time should have been less though. I received the product couple of days later than I expected.
I had one of these 250 GB Passport HD and wanted to buy one for my son. His computer was having trouble and he had one of the old external hard drives that required a separate power supply. It was bulky and noisy, so I ordered this WD Passport. Since the one I ordered was refurbished I suggested he open the box and try the drive right away. He's in New York city. He took it out of the box and said it looked brand new. It worked flawlessly and quickly. I don't use back up software. I just drag files on to the WD icon through the computer icon. The folders and files simply are added to the drive. As the drives become bigger, the prices drop for the older drives, making them excellent buys, especially from overstock.com.
Just plugged it into my computer's USB port, waited for Windows to recognize it, and right away I was transferring files. It has some software for backup and synchronizing that is pre-loaded on the hard drive. I really had not planned to use the device in that way, but it seemed like it was pretty comprehensive and easy to use. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone who has ever gone through the headache of losing files after a hard drive crash or had to transfer files over to another computer.
