Product Reviews for:
3.7 out of 5This DVR/VCR is easy to hook up and replaces the DVD converter box if you use over-the-air antenna TV. The picture quality is very good, and it records well. The only drawbacks are 1) you can't watch DTV if you have the timer recording on, 2) you can't delete channels within the main channel, such as the Spanish PBS channels - it will delete all the channels within the main channel number, and 3) the remote control buttons are very small making it difficult to operate in the dark (such as in bed). Otherwise, this product is awesome, especially at this price, for a one-unit digital tuner, DVR/VCR.
This unit is a very good value. It's rare to have a DVD recorder that has a built in digital tuner. Most have opted for diect connection to a set-top box with no tuner. I had an initial set-up problem that resolved itself and now I'm very happy with the overall performance.
We bought this to copy over our camcorder videos. We were looking for something quick and easy that wouldn't break the bank. Set up was a snap in within 2 days we had hours and hours of home videos burned onto DVD. Bonus feature is the digital tuner. We get some stations better through the DVD tuner. Very happy with our purchase.
Overall this is good product, would highly recommend. It is easy to use, how ever the buttons on the remote are rather small.
The Magnavox DVD Recorder & VCR Combo w/ Digital Tuner was easy to setup. Everything needed to connect to tv was included. Great value. Only negitive is time of warrenty which is 90 days.
I have 10 of this product and it has taken me awhile to learn alot of the ins and outs but as you see with 10 of them I must like them. I also have 3 of the newer one, I like this model the best. I saw where someone had problems with time changing. You have to take the day light savings time off and the auto clock setting to off it it will stop jumping time. I also had problems with the channel going to a high one and when I wanted say channel 3 it would flick back. I use the vcr and I would hit the bottonfor the dvd and change it and then go back to vcr and it would stay. I bought 2 from overstock last week and have hooked up 1 so far and it is wokrking great.
Had to return after 3 days. First the time kept changing on its own overnight, then the remote failed to work. Speaking of which, the buttons on the remote are very small and difficult to use. I purchased a new, high-end Panasonic to replace it and am very happy thus far.
I ordered this product because I do not have cable and would need the box for the HD mandate. With all the advertising about this change I never heard you would not be able to record with your 'old' vcr if it did not have a tuner even if you had the separate tuner box. After the vcr/dvd was connected (could see the picture quality improve on the TV so I know it was going thru the vcr/dvd) I could not get the vcr/dvd menu to come up. I read the install guide and I called the support number to no avail. I am a programmer an not unaccustomed to programming things. When I could not get the menu to come up I returned the vcr/dvd to Overstock. The cost to return an item that was not working with my TV was almost $50 !!! $39.00 because the box was opened and almost $10 for the prepaid label. I was very surprised as Overstock was always one of my favorite sites in the past. The item was packaged nicely with all parts there. The remote has very small buttons.
I accidentally bought this thinking it was the lower priced model without a digital tuner. I decided to go ahead & keep it. Although it picked up more digital channels than my TV, the picture quality is not as good as the television. I am using S-video and might try component and HDMI to see if it gets better, but I doubt it. DVD player doesn't look razor sharp either. When I tried the VCR, I almost took the unit back to the store. Picture & sound were terrible, but luckily it has manual tracking as well as automatic. After manually adjusting the tracking, it was much better. I got used to the fast rewind of the older VCR's. This one takes quite a bit longer. If you're nuts about an outstanding HD picture, you're not going to be happy with this product.
great product. new and well packaged. great value. I ordered it on monday morning and had it on my doorstep by thursday. very happy. I paid $45 less than for an identical one in the store (not including sales tax)
This works well and using the HDMI cable i have fantastic clarity. However the only thing I don't like is the response time. This unit moves a bit slow through it's processes.
I ordered the Magnavox DVD Recorder & VCR Combo w/Digital tuner for my husband and he said that it works great. It was really what he needed to do his programing of the programs he wanted to record. He said the little niche is that sometimes it jumps time other than that, it works great.
THIS RECORDER WORKS GREAT. TAKE TIME TO READ OPERATING DIRECTIONS. THIS IS THE SECOND ONE THAT I BOUGHT. WOULD BUY AGAIN. VERY HAPPY WITH PURCHASE.
I bought two of these. Both are excellent. They are easy to install and easy to use. They were delivered promptly even earlier than expected.
I have used this product for about 3 weeks, and I have no complaints about any functions.
The Magnavox set up easily, just like the VCR's I'm used to. Both the VCR recording function and the DVD recording function work fine. There is some difficulty with tracking when playing tapes--if player is stopped, tracking is slightly off when it is started again--but problem is not serious enough to make me regret purchase. Am considering getting one or two more at this price as backups.
The DVD player in perfect. This is my 3rd DVD player.
I purchased one of these units several months ago and am very pleased with it. The on screen programming is a snap and it plays/records well. Having a digital tuner I was able to ditch the converter box on the old TV and use it as the primary tuner. The only thing that is a downfall of the unit is that the VCR does not playback (except in duplicating) through the same outputs as the DVD. It requires a separate connection to another input to the TV or audio system. For the money this is a great unit..I recommend it!
I ordered this unit in nov 09 for a birthday present in dec. unit worked great up until the 5 month mark and then it just simply would not come on. all my electronic devices are pluged into surge protectors and when not in use they ar powered off and unpluged. I simply must imagine that this was a defect in the remanufactureing process. contacted O and they are issueing a replacement device.
The product seems to work well, but it took some patient reading of the manual, especially since it is not that clearly written or organized, as many other reviews have already noted. In fairness, there are some complicated aspects of this device. I think if manual writers did some pretesting on a sample of users to identify the most common "errors" that users make, they could create a section similar to FAQs in which they listed FUMs or Frequent User Mistakes, along with the remedies. And as others note, the buttons on both the machine and remote are tiny; making them larger would be a great improvement.
