Versatile and SO helpful!
 from Chicagoland,  Nov 20, 2007

I previously purchased a much older Magellan model which couldn't even figure out where it was and we couldn't figure it out. It seemed so arcane that we finally just gave up. Perhaps it was defective - we'll never know. It was a relatively cheap refurbish and we ultimately tossed it. So I was a little leery of this model, but the excellent reviews encouraged me. I'm so glad I purchased it! The screen is easy to read, even for my old eyes, and gives you 2D and 3D options. There are several color options for both the map and the menus, which are helpful, as my hubby is color blind, so we needed some versatility there. There are turn by turn voice directions, and you can choose chime, ding or beep for when you actually get to the intersection. You can choose for it to warn you of upcoming turns at several intervals of your choice. You also can choose several ways to route - fastest, least distance, avoid toll roads, avoid highways. There are many programmable choices in this little gadget, which was surprising to me, as well as gratifying. The documentation is weak, but if you go to the Magellan site, there is a demo and a lot of information on the unit. It also comes with a CD with more extensive documentation, which answered all the questions I could think of. This unit seems to learn by what you do. It wanted to take me out of my subdivision using a road that seemed inconvenient. I was driving the first time at night since summer, and I became disoriented trying to do it my own way, LOL. I made several screwy turns to get back on track, and it soon started telling me how to get back on track. The next time I routed a way out of here, it used some of the turns I had actually used while I was messed up, LOL. I tricked it on the return route and drove past my house. It accurately kept telling me the next turn I should make to get home, instantly adjusting to my "mistake." I headed towards the mall. It finally stopped suggesting turns, and when I came to a stop light, the screen was asking me if I wanted to re-route and was waiting for my answer. (I don't have it installed on the dash yet and didn't notice.) As I was leaving the mall, I hit "reroute" and as soon as I was on one of the mall's access roads, it started accurately telling me where to go to get home. I used it to go to a school in a town I'm unfamiliar with, whose physical address is on a completely different street from the preferred entrance. In fact, an ordinary map doesn't even show these two areas to be even on the same intersecting block! I was nervous! Since the address to the street the parking lot is on wasn't given by the school, I was a little stymied trying to program it, so I chose the nearest intersection for the route, and even though the directions were slightly different than the school gave, I arrived just fine. It routed me differently to go back home, but it worked out well and in less time than it took me to get there. This was all in the dark in an unfamiliar town, and I was so thankful for the Magellan 2000 telling me every once in a while how soon my next turn was going to be, and what direction I would be going in. For a while, I thought it was lost, but I looked at its map at an intersection, and there was a gas station symbol exactly where a real gas station was, so I was reassured. The Roadmate 2000 has an address book and a special area to record your home address. You just hit the "Home" button after you've programmed it, and it takes you right home. It may use a different route than how you arrived at your point, but nevertheless, is accurate. I was relieved, as I was driving at night in a really unfamiliar area, but it got me home swiftly and accurately. It even knows all the little roads in our 17 year old subdivision, which many real maps don't have. You can program multiple destination routes, as well as save routes for later use. It also allows use of an SD card to store your routes and address book. It also will route you around traffic jams, based on specifications you provide - you can even tell it to reroute you if you are in slow traffic as little as one minute. Of course, near where we live, that thing would come on every minute or so, so, fortunately there are options for longer intervals before suggesting a re-route. The screen tells you how far to your next turn, as well as estimated number of minutes to arrival, which adjust as you travel. You can do a "test run" with it, by choosing "suggest simulate route" in the settings area. If you set it to do so, this will pop up when you ask it to route you to an address or intersection. By doing this, you can check out if the suggested route seems squirrelly to you, and you can tell it to give you other options if so - such as shortest distance or shortest time. The box comes with a cigarette lighter car charger, as well an AC adapter charger, so you can charge it from indoors, which was great, because I was able to charge it from home before my first trip. It also comes with a data cable. As I understand it, that won't help you update maps at the Magellan site, unless you purchase a new map set., but it is supposed to update the firmware, as well as help with optional add ons. All the mounting equipment comes with it, as well as a sticky pad. As soon as I turned it on, it came on and even had a fair charge in it already, so that I was able to immediately program it and make sure it knew where I was, which was reassuring after our first experience. I love this little gadget! It was supposed to be a Christmas present for my hubby. If I can avoid temptation...

AWESOME
from New Jersey,  Oct 27, 2007

I just bought the Magellan Roadmate 2000 and used it for a week before I decided to write a review. I love it!!! The only flaw I saw was that it didn't give the route in advance, but it does by simply touching the Route on the screen. It's simple to use and much nicer than others I've seen. I'm amazed at how quickly it reroutes you if you take a different road without forcing you to make a u-turn.

Magellan Roadmate 2000 GPS
 from Alabama,  Oct 15, 2007

The first Magellan Roadmate 2000 GPS did not work well. Overstock.com was very accomodating. They sent a new one and it was easy to return the defective GPS. We used it on a trip to Texas and it worked fantastically. Even detoured us around a traffic accident!

Magellan RoadMate
 Sep 11, 2007

It has been nice to go directly to a place that you are looking for. This is great. No more getting lost unless you don't pay attention to voice when you are being directed by the RoadMate. But don't worry she will recalculate for you and put you back on the right track. I'm loving it!!!

and there we are
from Northern Nevada,  Mar 7, 2008

I am still trying to get used to using a GPS, and for the price, this one is a good way to get started. I haven't been able to give it a "real" test yet, but I did program a destination on the other side of (small) town. I tried and was basically able to confuse it. It wanted me to go straight down the main thoroughfare, but when I turned off to take a side street that ran the same exact way, the unit kept telling me to either "make a legal u-turn when possible" or other directions to get me back to the main drag. Several times, it advised that it was "recalculating the trip and finally I was already parked at the address I inputted into it and it never caught up to that. ALSO, IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIT, OVERSTOCK SHOULD LIST THAT IT COMES WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED. I bought an ugly, gaudy, useless windshield suction mount separately, because OVERSTOCK offered it and it wasn't listed in the MAGELLAN GPS description

I've found my way!
from Severn, MD,  Aug 23, 2007

I appreciate the fact that this device was available at such an attractive price. I purchased it for my bride when I heard the frustration in her voice over not being able to find her way to an event. I never wanted her to be in that position again of having to feel her way around in unfamiliar surroundings. I went to Overstock.com in search of a navigation system and this unit popped up at a tremendous savings. I put it through its paces and was quite impressed with the ease of its operation. It was a true bargain.

Megellan RoadMate 2000
from Binghamton, NY,  Aug 9, 2008

The Megellan RoadMate 2000 is a great device for those who wish to find an address quickly and easily. The Points of Interest selection (i.e. restaurants, gas stations, etc.) is excellent. However there are limitations that may cause you to think twice about buying this product. The first and foremost limitation is that the Megellan RoadMate 2000 does NOT allow you to search a destination by entering coordinates. This is a very important to some businesses such as mine (surveyors, engineers, etc.) It also should make any Geocacher cringe!!! This is partially why I bought this product, so I definately lost out. Another limitation is that there is an icon for "Region". When I checked on this icon at the Magellan website I found out the the Megellan RoadMate 2000 does not have this capability, which begs the question, "Why does the product have the icon if it can't be used?. The good news about the Magellan website is that at least on the occasion I called (a Friday afternoon), the support team was right on the ball. No waits. I first entered a few buttons after calling and figured "Oh, great, I'll never get hold of anyone", but I was wrong. They answered my questions and were quick to help and were very friendly. That in itself might be worth the money! The phone number is listed on the websight.

Waiting for Fixed GPS
from Bridgeport, PA,  Jan 23, 2008

This product was easy to use. At first use the gps worked well. After a while I was not able to enter an address. Put in sleep mode and when I turned unit on, a screen warning came up. The OK button did not work. Shortly after the unit went off and unable to turn back on. Called tech service and had to send the unit in for repair. This was after using the unit 5 times. I will give another report after I get the unit back from repair.

Great value
 Dec 5, 2007

There are other GPS units that have more features and bigger screens but for the money this is as good as it gets. It was for my wife and she installed in her car without my help and figured out how to use it in no time. If you know my wife then this is quite an accomplishment.

ROADMATE 2000
from boston, ma,  Dec 3, 2007

I like my Magellan GPS very much, very user friendly, and accurate most of the time. The only problem I have found, is the map is outdated and missing a lot of points of interest, I have been unable to find an upgrade for this problem.

neat gadget
from Kansas City,  Nov 19, 2007

Overall I have to say this is a good product. It has some quirks that can be pretty frustrating. It will mostly get you to where you want to go, but if you come to a major detour it will keep trying to take you back to where you can't go. If you keep going it will sooner or later tell you how to go the new way. It doesn't show fairly new roads that have been there for several years; could have its maps updated more often. It would also be nice if there were a way to either reprogram it for updates or to notify the company of updates so they could be integrated into the device.

I do not know how I sold so many homes and drove around with NO GPS. I use to print directions from Mapquest, wasting paper and Lord forbid they want to see another property someplace else. God had to be with me. BUUUT with this GPS I noticed if a home was built in 2005 to current it does not recognize the street or community, I have to type in a street or highway that is close or runs through the neighborhood. I guess I have to update it. I still like it.

Pretty good for the money
from Santa Monica, California,  Apr 29, 2008

I like the size and price of this system but there are a few features I wish it had. The Magellan RoadMate does NOT announce names of streets (they are on the GPS though). It does alert you (with a ding) when you are supposed to make a turn. I have found that it's hard not hearing the street name ~ especially in heavy traffic (when it's hard to take your eyes off the road) or at crazy multi-street intersections). If neither of these occur where you live, then this is a great deal. I typically use it when I'm lost in Los Angeles so getting home is my only concern and for that purpose, it's great. If you want all the bells and whistles, I think you're going to have to spend a little more.

Magellan Roadmate 2000
from Decatur, MI,  Apr 14, 2008

Great piece of equipment. Easy to use. I love the map plus verbal cues. Re-calculates quickly when I change course. The verbal cue of direction to turn 2 miles and then 1/2 mile prior to the turn is a great help in making sure you're in the appropriate lane early enough to make the turn safely. I also really liked the verbal cue at the intersection as in some areas there are several intersections close together and in heavy traffic you can't keep your eyes on the milage on the car because you need to watch the road. POI (points of interest) is a great feature. Drove around for 6 hours in an unfamiliar area and found requested locations with no problem. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a GPS system.
