I bought the cable lock for a 6-week trip to Europe. As it turned out I used it once in a hotel room, the rest of the time I just kept the laptop in a locked suitcase in the room. The lock works fine for the purpose, like a library or wi-fi hotspot where you might leave the laptop unattended for a few minutes. I would highly recommend it for that purpose, it works great and is a deterrent to petty thievery.
