Upon unpacking the exd-1, the first thing I noticed that the unit appeared brand new.... If this is a common example of "re-furbished", I am sold on the concept. I hooked the unit up and everything worked as described.... Great Sound! I have a Bose surround system as well, but think the exd1 sound quality is as good or better if hooked to a subwoofer.. It sounds great without the subwoofer, but much richer if you have one around. I used an old one that I had from an old Cambridge Soundworks system. I am very impressed with JVC and their "executive" compact systems. This one is not only attractive and compact, but sounds like units much larger and more expensive.
We bought this stereo set for our son's bedroom and liked it so much that we bought a second set for the family room. Considering it's compact size, this thing puts out amazing sound. Way beats some of the small, overpriced Bose systems, in my opinion. We also love the USB port, so we can use it with our MythTV setup. It is factory refurbished and the very first set shipped to us had a motor problem (the disk won't spin), but Overstock's customer service made the return fairly painless. Overall a great deal.
We had been looking for a small shelf stereo system for quite awhile when we stumbled across this one. First, it is visually appealing with cherrywood-toned wood speakers, and the small receiver/cd/dvd player. And we liked that. Also, the size is perfect for where we wanted it placed in our living room. Next, the sound quality is just what we were looking for in that it sounds great when playing background music, and better when you turn it up for some around the downstairs cleaning (or just rocking out). The wood cone speakers were a surprise as the quality is great, with no audible vibration or feedback. The set up was a snap - only took five minutes from start to finish - and the remote is easy to use. We have not tried it as a dvd player yet, however, have no doubt it will perform well at that, also.
