Garmin
Since the early 1990s, Garmin has been a leader in GPS technology. Garmin GPS navigation systems started with Garmin handheld GPS and marine units, later branching out into GPS for aviation, cars, laptops and -- most recently -- mobile phones. The accompanying collection of Garmin GPS Accessories makes all of their GPS units easily portable and compatible with most vehicles. In nearly every way, Garmin GPS has become a leader in navigation on land, air and water.
Outdoor and handheld Garmin GPS units seek to make navigating trails and waterways easier, providing you with map data for the most rugged terrain and revealing topographical features that you can only get from a bird's-eye perspective. Garmin focuses on long battery life and high sensitivity for handheld GPS units, making them rugged, weather-resistant and reliable for whatever type of landscape or climate you find yourself in. Garmin GPS also finds a home on varying sizes of watercraft, enabling fish-finding, radar and communications for marine applications.
The most versatile of the company's product offerings has probably been the Garmin Nuvi series, from the Garmin automotive GPS family. Since 2007, succeeding versions of the Nuvi have offered an increasingly robust array of features, including text-to-speech, Web browsing, lane-assist and voice recognition. Live traffic updates and smart route calculations make navigating any city simpler and more fuel-efficient. All these features move Garmin GPS devices closer to mobile computers and smart phones than simple navigation units alone. Watch for Garmin GPS units that hold the specific features you need, as the variety between each model adds and drops certain functionality that you may or may not need.
Garmin Mobile technology, like the Garminfone and apps for smart phones, have gone a long way toward melding advanced Garmin GPS features with mobile technology. Some smart phones featuring Garmin XT mobile software enable navigation and calling simultaneously, not to mention the coordinating abilities that navigation and Web browsing offer to mobile users. By entering the mobile market, Garmin seeks to solidify its position not just as a GPS navigation leader, but also as a mobile electronics pioneer that fuses location-based information with cell phone communication and connectivity.

    • Works for me

We got this one because of reviews on Overstock and other sources. It was the right price for the features. I really wanted to have one that named the streets - which we found is important. We messed around with trying the various voice options and forgot to put it back on the TTL text to language option - which includes naming of the streets. It makes a difference in response time to have street names called out when it comes time to turn. Otherwise it says, "in 1/8th of a mile turn right" Well I'm not a good gauge of distance and without the TTL I was turning sooner than I was suppose to. Once I realized the TTL wasn't turned on we had no more driving errors. The voice is loud enough and clear enough. I think those who say otherwise might have cars that have a lot of internal road noise on the inside of their vehicle. I also bought the latch device that hooks on to the air vents instead of the window - love it. Bought two - one to travel with and one to keep in my car. I found that my iPhone connection cords can be used to connect the GPS to the computer to update it. So all is good. I recommend it.

    • did ok

will find the shortest route, not necessary the quickest....... but when in the big city... kept me from losing what little hair I have left.........

    • GARMIN GPS

I PURCHASED THE GARMIN 255 AND I LOVE IT. I NEEDED IT FOR A TRIP TO NORTH CAROLINA AND IT WORKED PERFECTLY. ESPECIALLY COMING HOME THRU WASHINGTON D.C. I COULD HAVE NEVER DONE IT WITHOUT THE GARMIN. I EVEN FOUND THE GARMIN FOR A CHEAPER PRICE THAN OVERSTOCK.COM DUE TO A GRAND OPENING. OVERSTOCK.COM MATCHED THE PRICE WITH NO PROBLEM AT ALL!! THANK YOU OVERSTOCK.COM

    • Garmin for the win!

I've used every brand of GPS on the market that I can think of, and have always had problems with all of them one way or another (wrong location, POI not where GPS says it is, etc.). The first GPS I used was a Garmin and I hated it, so I tried other stuff. That was about 3 years ago. Since trying other company's devices, I've decided to give Garmin another shot, and I tell you I am not let down with this device. Very accurate directions, cool features like the Eco-Drive Challenge (a fun little game you can play with yourself while driving long distances alone.... keeps me busy), allows me to enter current gas prices and tells me on average what I spend on gas per trip and total since I got the GPS. Also has built-in traffic which with the other devices they wanted me to pay for. And the one thing the Garmin has that no other device I've used has is the trip statistics (or whatever they call them). Tells your average speed, miles traveled, time moving/stopped, etc. You can reset for every trip or do like I do and let it go for the life of the unit. It's interesting to see how far you've gone and how much gas you've spent. As far as a GPS, this device is a win. And with the extra features built-in since I last used a Garmin, it puts it over the top. Plus the window holder works, which is more than I can say for other units. Great purchase! Would definitely recommend and buy Garmin again.

    • just what i needed

i am extremely directionality challenged. n then past i had owned a navigator that simply told me to turn onto streets without giving the name of the street and without fair warning. this NUVI 255W does it all...... telling you when to turn plenty in advance and giving the exact name of the street or highway. i feel more confident and less stressed when venturing out on the roads. thanks!!!

    • Best Gps on market

Easy to see, map updates available, user friendly, better than any other GPS units- as reported to me by friend owners of other brands, while riding with me. Friends often call me for directions.

    • Amazing!!

I had spent the last year tring to find the Right gps for me! yes a year is a long time but im very fickle! i did however determin through my research that the Garmin makes the best gps for the amount of money so most of my year was spent searching for the perfect Garmin for me! and by golly i think i found it!!!! I use to have onstar roadside assistance only because i would get lost weekly in fact i think they just got use to me calling and would send bets around on how soon it would be before i would call again! before each trip even one as simple as going to the store i would have panic attacks because i knew i would get lost at least once... onstar worked for the most part but its kind of embarrassing to have to stay on the phone and get step by step instructions to my location. I can proudly say with Garmin Nuvi 255W i have not got lost once! and with the extremely user friendly touch screen and fun voices you can download it makes driving a lot less stressful and fun! I would suggest this product to anyone and everyone even to those who were given a good sense of direction... i mean you cant tell me you have NEVER taken a wrong turn or two :)

    • go garmin

The Garmin is a great tool. It worked very well for everything that we tried and had many more features then I originally thought that it had. The only draw back that we found - My husband is hard of hearing and it was difficult for him to hear that female voice. We changed to the male voice and this seemed to help. He would like to have a deeper male voice for better quality.
