I moved right after I bought this, so I ignored it for about a year. Pretty simple to use. I made it a little more intimidating than I probably needed. We no longer had a VCR, so I bought a used one, researched how to clean it, and bought various chemicals and tools. The directions in the box were minimal, so I found the usual helpful video on YouTube. So far I've used it to look at old videos on my monitor, searching for a poorly labeled but hopefully not missing tape. I ended up giving up on using my Mac, because old iMovie is cranky and won't burn dvds, which I wanted for my purpose. It seems to work fine, so far, on PC. The video suggested buying a Y-splitter audio cable to use with the old VCR; make sure you get the right one.

NEEDS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT I was trying to save some VHS movies I had from self-distruction. I thought ELGATO VIDEO CAPTURE would do the trick better than my previous system but it idid not so. Even if it is more advance than my previous capture system, the quality of the final product when I exported to the DVD format was inferior in quality to the original VHS tape. I know that the VHS quality wise is less half as good as a DVD product. Nevertheless, I expected the resulting copy should have been AS GOOD AS the original VHS tape. Does the trick If you have old VHS tapes cluttering up your house, this is the device for you...provided you still have a VHS player. It easily converts your VHS tapes into a MP4 file. Granted, these files tend to be HUGE, so you'll probably need a mass storage device to go along with this purchase. It's easy to use and you can let it go without attending to it. I used it to get rid of some VHS tapes prior to moving. Excellent. I gave it a GOOD rating because of the size of the files it creates. I wish there were more of a way to compress them.
