The Denon AVR 890 replaced an older HK 630 which I had been very pleased with. It is set-up in a 5.1 configuration with Polk Audio speakers. The main driver for the purchase was to get HDMI audio support and switching now that I have a Blu-ray player. I have been amazed how much better the sound seperation is in the Denon on stereo soundtracks which I have configured for Dolby PLII cinema mode (the same way the HK 630 was set-up).Audio response is superior to the HK in Dolby digital and DTS mode as well. My speakers sound better and I'm now hearing sounds that were absent before such as snow crushing under footsteps in an Everest program.The manual takes some reading and is not too logical (and I'm an engineer) and the menus are not very straightforward. This is a well known fact and there are alternative set-up guides published online - Just search the AVS forum. Do take the time to set-up the Audyssey settings as it is well worth the effort. You'll have a well calibrated system that you can make some minor tweeks to if desired.

Not comaptible with my 3D bluray! Otherwise a good product so far!

The only downside to this unit is it takes awhile to set up. Otherwise the features are extensive and performs beyond my expectations. I bought this unit specifically for the Zone A/B feature as I have speakers wired to the outside on my deck. This feature allows you to watch and listen to a program on TV or a music source on Zone A and listen to an entirely different source on Zone B. Works great! The sound quality is amazing and the unit was well priced. There are newer versions of this unit available but could not justify paying twice the money for basically the same features. Have never owned a Denon product as they are pricey yet reviews have always placed them at the top of the list for quality and features. I replaced a 6 year old Kenwood AV receiver and what an amazing difference.

Good sound. Lousy Instruction Book. Took hours to set it up properly. Remote is complex and flimsy. However, the sound is what you pay for and the sound is as advertised!
