  • Don't purchase this computer!

I purchased this computer in March, 2013. It came with Windows 7 installed. The computer failed to operate normally from day one. I contacted Tech support. They had me reinstall Windows. Everything worked normally for about 5 days. The bottom line was that I went thru 4 computers. All 4 of them did not work. I requested a full refund. These computer were supposed to be refurbished. I do not recommend buying refurbished computers.

  • Great office computer

This was purchased for use in the office. It is not meant to be a game computer, so the graphics is adequate for the usual word processing and web browsing and other business applications. Having used Dell computers for a long time, the build quality of this Optiplex is very good. It is rugged, the cover is easy to open and service. It is definitely not a modern, pretty, glossy, home computer. But the price just is too good to pass up. I run a dual monitor setup, the system supports DVI and VGA outputs at the same time. and Windows 7 does a fine job supporting two screens side by side. I noticed the video lagging a little bit (trying moving a window around quickly) and decided to add a video card to override the onboard video. You will have to remove the DVI card that came with the system to make it work however. Because of the underpowered onboard video, I decided to add a video card (HD 5450 and the newer HD 6450 both work well and transform the computer into a very decent HTPC. Additionally, I added in a 80gig SSD (solid state drive) as the boot drive, and watched Windows boot up in seconds instead of minutes. The hard disk is small by modern standards at only 160gig but for office work, it is plenty for the usual files and documents. Powerpoints and spreadsheets don't take up much room compared videos, games, and movies. Having said that, it runs streaming video such as Netflix, YouTube, and GotoMeeting very well, so is fine for office work. With the money saved from getting this refurb unit, and spending a little to get the graphics card and SSD (about $100 total), I have a computer that is blazing fast, smooth graphics (not for 3D or gaming though), and a lot less expensive than a new computer with similar performance. BTW you can use both the SSD and the original hard disk together by creating a spanned volume under Windows - put the OS on the SSD and your data files on the regular hard disk, and you get the speed + the storage. If you need more storage, swap out the hard disk and keep the SSD to keep the fast boot and app launch times.
