Gigabyte makes some good AMD based motherboards. Although I heard horrid stories about some of their boards arriving DOA, this one arrived fine and powered up after putting all the components together and was ready to load up the OS. The GA-F2A88XM-D3H is in use for a friend who wanted turn and old computer case into a Home Theater PC. This board was paird with: AMD A6-5400K 8GB Kingston HyperX 1600 DDR 3 RAM And Windows 8.1

Based on multiple reviews, on this an other external sound cards, I was concerned about getting true 7.1 surround sound through the optical digital output since optical outputs are limited to 2 channels unless the information is compressed through Dolby Compression in the card. I was looking for a way to boost the sounds from my computer so I could watch movies while exercising, with sufficient sound to drown out the equipment sounds so I could hear dialog. While I had issues getting more than two channels to work initially, it was due to settings on the computer instead of with the sound card. I am running a Windows 7 system and pushing the sound out to a Sony 5.1 DVD/receiver system. Depending on the source material, (DVD's work, but Netflix still has issues for other reasons and most web sites are not pushing more than one channel) I can get true surround sound, with the rear surround speakers faked through my rear L/R speakers. (7.1 sound on a 5.1 system) For those who are having difficulties, in Windows 7 the sound needs to be configured through both the Sound dialog box in the Control Panel, as well as through the Windows Media Center. The Windows Sound settings only select the right output options. To let the computer know that there is more than two channels, the setup has to be done in the Windows Media Center. The test in the SoundWave software's configuration panel will not provide a proper test since the testing environment is only for the analog hook-up. The typical test in the Advanced tab will only push sound to two channels, but if you use the DTS and Dolby test in the Enhancements tab, all of the channels will be tested separately. The test in the Media Center will also push sound to all of the speakers. Once the sound system is set up through the Windows Media Center, another good test is the THX Audio Test with "The Phantom Menace" DVD as it cycles through all 7.1 speakers. For those sources that are not Dolby compatible, such as Netflix on a PC for now, setting the receiver to use Pro Logic helped fake the surround sound with some success. Overall, the system appears to be working correctly.

My onboard audio was not recognized by WIN 7, so this board replaced it. Use Windoze Update to provide the latest driver and it will work first time.

Arrived in about 5 days using standard shipment rate. Install took all of 2 minutes. The sound coming out of my 5.1 computer system is really nice. Would highly recommend this to someone looking for a mid-range sound card.

The software driver integration did not exhibit issues seen in lower end accelerated graphics cards (e.g. GTX 580). You won't get the increase in frame rate expected unless your application specifically uses the extra graphics horsepower available in this card. However, it will allow your application to increase texture resolutions and video processing affects like anti-aliasing.

It was about time to replace my old 480, and this was a very nice upgrade. The 770 is essentially an improved version of the 680, but for much less. That said it is still pretty pricey, so a 760 might be the better choice for most. Still, I do not regret getting this at all. It is significantly more powerful, uses less power, makes less noise, and runs about 20 degrees (Celsius) lower than the 480 did at load. I have yet to play a game that the card can't handle at max settings aside from poor console ports that weren't optimized for PC. Looking at you Assassin's Creed series. (Still runs great, but there is a lot of NPC pop in when running around. This is the game engine's fault though). If I had the cash to spare I'd pick up a second one for SLI. I'll probably still end up doing that anyway.

Sound on Dell Inspiron slimline from 2010 had stopped working and needed a new sound card. This worked well and was a good deal for the value -- I had ordered a cheaper one online first but it didn't come with a driver/software and after hours of searching I couldn't find a compatible one online. So, although this cost a few more dollars, it works perfectly and comes with everything you need. Easy to install even if you aren't used opening up your computer and swaping things.

I have been using Intel CPUs since 486 computers when I had an issue with AMD not being compatible with certain proprietary software. I tried the AMD because of great reviews and the fact it was cheaper with better specs. Unfortunately it wasted a lot of my time because software company refused to believe it was not compatible and I had to switch MBs, memory, and finally had to get an intel-based MB to do their research and development. I have always had good luck with Intel, and now they are actually a fantastic bargain for their quality and efficiency, and I am a customer for life - probably! My most recent installs were the i3 here and an i5 fourth generation.

Contrary to what the other review says, this card works great with all Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 that have the Windows Media Center add on. (Windows Vista & Windows 7 comes with Windows Media Center, you must buy it extra with Windows 8) The 5188-7344 drivers are all included with Windows. Once you attach an antenna and do the first time Windows Media Center setup, your PC is now an HDTV Digital Video Recorder for all the local Digital TV stations in your area. To find out what kind of antenna you'll need and what stations you can get, go to the Consumer Electronics Association and National Broadcasters Association web site, http://www.antennaweb.org/
