  • Older model, solid build

    Oct 24, 2014

The Conductor  from Upstate NY, Rating:4.0

This is an older model phone, with a now-nearly-obsolete version of android, a good slide-out keyboard, and solid build quality. The design strikes a nice balance between appearance (with some tasteful chrome accents and brightwork) and utilitarian features (a nicely functional keyboard and a D-pad so you don't have to smudge the screen all the time). The case is small in its outline (and screen concomitantly small), but thick, making it more at home in a front pocket than the back. Activating it requires creating a "Motoblur" cloud service account, for backing up data I suppose, but mostly it is just annoying. You will need a Wi-Fi (or mobile data) connection to do the activation. If you are on a tight budget and don't care about apps much (many games won't work on the old Android versions anymore, for example) and don't need the fastest data service, and prefer a real keyboard, and want something that won't fall apart in a few months, then this phone is a good choice for you.

  • Not bad for the price

    Oct 24, 2014

The Conductor  from Upstate NY, Rating:4.0

This is a low-cost phone with a recent version of Android. It appears to be a model orginally intended for the Chinese market and subsequently adapted and re-badged for use in Englsh-speaking markets. I got it for my teen daughter who uses it on cheap pre-paid AT&T service. Obviously, at $85 there are shortcomings in the build quality. The camera is rather meh under low light, and the case plastic, and fit & finish, are decidedly mediocre. The Wi-Fi senstivity and range are poorer than her previous phone. We don't have data service for it and therefore haven't actually tested it and that doesn't matter to us anyhow. (The limited mobile data chipset, combined with modern Android, is what makes me think this design was orginally intended for Chinese consumers.) On the positive side, the phone has some nice features that are astounding at this price level. The screen is gererously sized, processor decently fast, form factor nicely thin, and most prominently, the phone has Android...
