EZ 2 use
I used this for scanning in pictures and also to scan from negatives. Top resolution for scanned pix was 1200 dpi. GO right to the "Scanning Driver" in the Canon Navigator and to the Advanced tab. This has a preview button which is great for making sure you have the negative framed correctly in the film holder. That plastic sanp-in place is a little klunky, but the scanned jpeg at 1200 dpi is worth it. I imported this into my favorite photo app for cropping., contrast adjustment, etc. I did _not_ use the included 3rd party software or Canon Navigator for any cropping , etc. I referred to the quick start guide at first to get to the driver screen and also to set up the scanning of the negatives. I was happy with the scanned image -- did not try any of the "copy" , "pdf' or "email" features. i only wanted a scanner.

Perfect for us with a Mac
I am on a MacBook Pro using OS 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. I purchased this scanner on Overstock in Mar 2010. It was incredibly easy to set up and to use. Here's what I did: Plugged in the scanner using the provided USB cable; Put a picture on the scanner; Launched Image Capture, the scanning software included w Snow Leopard; Clicked Scan in Image Capture. Note that I did not install or attempt to install the Canon software provided in the box. The image scanned just fine and dropped right into my Pictures folder (you also have the option of dropping it into iPhoto, Mail, etc.) This is an excellent, small, low-volume scanner for use with a Mac.
