IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR QUALITY VIDEO, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL YOU SEE ONE OF THESE IN PERSON. NOTHING CAN PREPARE YOU FOR THE PICTURE QUALITY. IT IS JUST LIKE BEING THERE. LAST YEAR, I WAS LOOKING FOR A MULTI-GIG MP3 PLAYER WHEN I SAW THIS. I COULDN'T AFFORD THIS WHEN I FIRST SAW IT. I TRIED A COBY 30GB, WOULDN'T WORK WHEN I GOT IT. RETURNED TO COBY, AND IT WAS REPLACED WITH ANOTHER THAT WOULDN'T WORK. I FINALLY GAVE UP ON COBY. I THEN PURCHASED A SANSA 8GB. IT WAS SO EASY TO USE AND I COULD CARRY IT IN MY POCKET AT WORK, USING JUST ONE EAR PIECE OF MY HEADPHONE. BY CHANCE, I CAME ACROSS AN ARCHOS IN PERSON, AND FELL IN LOVE. I GAVE MY SANSA TO MY SON, AND PURCHASED THE ARCHOS 604. I FOUND THE DVR ON CLEARANCE FOR $30.00 AND I CAN NOW COPY MOVIES, MY SHOWS, ETC. I HAVE DOWNLOADED MY PICTURES ONTO IT, MY MUSIC OFF OF MY SANSA IS ON IT, AND I STILL HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM TO ADD. (I HAD MAXED OUT MY SANSA.) I COMPARED THE 604 WITH THE 604 WIFI. THE PICTURE QUALITY WITH THE WIFI TOUCH SCREEN WAS NOTHING COMPARED TO THE 604. THE WIFI QUALITY WAS NOT UP TO PAR EITHER. THE WIFI ACCESS WAS NOT WORTH THE VIDEO COMPROMISE. I SHIPPED THE 604 WIFI BACK. I LOVE MY ARCHOS 604! I HAVEN'T SEEN A GENERATION 5 (605 WIFI, ETC) IN PERSON, SO I CANNOT COMPARE THE 604 WITH THE 605, BUT IF THE QUALITY IS ANYTHING COMPARABLE WITH THE 604, IT HAS TO BE SOMETHING TO BEHOLD. I STILL HAVE NOT FIGURED OUT ALL OF THE OPTIONS THE ARCHOS 604 HAS, BUT I HAVEN'T HAD MUCH TIME TO SIT DOWN WITH IT. MY SON, 18, ON THE OTHERHAND PICKS IT UP AND FINDS HIS WAY AROUND ANY OF IT. HE IS EVEN IMPRESSED WITH MY NEW TOY! PLEASE CHECK INTO THE ARCHOS BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING. IT IS DEFINITELY WORTH YOUR TIME!
The buttons were very easy to familiarize. I like the dual method of going thru the files. The picture quality is amazing. the built in speaker could be a little louder, but for being battery operated, I'm impressed. The battery lasts a good long while too. You can't use itunes format files, so you have to convert them or rip them again. Unfortunately, it isn't "all inclusive" so if you want to watch DVDs you have to download the codec for it (at least its available). also the TV connector (also sold seperate) is something I'm willing to put money into as it can play AND record shows from the TV. (Can we say DVR?). Over all, I think it is worth the money. the only negative thing I can say about it is if you load too many videos the thumbnails get stuck loading and you have to literally take out the battery. Though there is another way to view the videos without seeing the thumbnails, it sure is annoying.
the first Archos i purchased broke on the first day. yeah....it was used......but i still didnt expect it to break on the first day. Overstock was very quick with sending me a new package. the second one i got worked great. after i picked up the ac adapter (so i could charge it through an electrical socket) and some skull candy earplugs...i was ready to go. i take it to work with me to watch movies and listen to music. so far so good. note: i wouldnt recommend it for a Mp3 Rookie.
Nice unit. Picure quality good. However sound is low -- even with headphones. Interface is a bit clunky to use. Too many button clicks to do what you want to do. If you want to move your DVDs onto this unit to take on an airplane or tape TV shows, BEWARE! They don't tell you that you will need to spend an additional $100 to do it!!!!
I looked at various options when looking for the MP3 player and was leaning towards a Zune because I have always been happy with microsoft products. The Archos was the second option I had narrowed my decision down to and I have to say selecting the Archos 604 was the best decision I made. The Archos has the impressive lcd display and is very easy to navigate after playing around with it a bit. Being a guy I obviously avoid the instruction manual and was able to navigate pretty quickly. After using both the Zune, Ipod and the Archos it is like night and day. The only down fall to the Archos is the built in speaker lacks the volume and sound quality and it is more difficult to find various accessories. Unlike the Apple products which are advertised and can even be picked up in gas stations now I think, the Archos has limited places that seem to have accessories for them.
I bought this unit and the quality is superb, I love the picture and sound quality and love the features. I also love the size as its not a dinky little cheapy looking mp3 player. There are only a few down sides To this player, one being that the built in speaker could have been better as far as output goes, and secondly, it doesn't seem to work with Napster to go which is a real bummer if you have a family and like the 14.95 a month unlimited downloads for up to 3 people. Still not enough for me to send it back, I like it enough that I'm willing to shell out the per song money. For the price I have yet to see anything even close to this!!
I had my Archos 604 for less than a week. I used it TWICE. On the 3rd time that I powered it up, there was this ominous message that there was a system error, and would I like to perform a repair, do nothing, or reformat the disk? I tried all 3 options, none did a thing. I can't turn off the unit now, I have to remove the battery to reset it to get it to turn off. My PC does not see the unit. I have since done more research on the Archos 604 and have found that this Recovery Code 2 error is quite prevalent as a reported issue throughout the Internet. The only "support" I've seen so far on the topic is the request to update the firmware. Well, duh, I can't update the firmware because my PC does not see the unit. I have been trying to get through to Archos Tech Support for several days now (it is still under warranty), but to no avail. On the surface, this looks like a GREAT unit, and I'll admit it was really great, when it was working! Now I'm just a little ticked off that it's not when it's brand new. Hopefully Archos can get this issue resolved. If not, I'll never buy another one. Buyer, beware.
