I was thrilled when I first pulled this backpack out of the box. Much bigger than I expected, and large enough to hold my medium format camera, my dslr, 2 medium format lenses, 2 dslr lenses, 34 rolls of film, and compartments left over. However, though it's capable of storing much more, it's still a backpack, so attempting to carry all this stuff in it is not feasible. Realizing that, I only carried my medium format, two lenses, and film (which don't weigh much) in the backpack on my trip to Italy. I used it as a carry on, and didn't rub against anything, but after only a few hours of airport, I noticed one of the paddings on the backpack was not placed correctly, and started causing some abrasion on the fabric. Though this was only a cosmetic blemish, it was annoying since it was brand-spanking new, and I knew it would only get worse over time. By the time I arrived in Rome, I noticed that one of the shoulder straps was coming undone - half way! I had to ask the hotel staff for some needle and thread to fix it. The front part of the backpack is actually a smaller backpack, which was very useful. Since I didn't want to risk ripping the other strap, I decided to carry this smaller, more walking-for-hours-friendly pack. I was only carrying a few rolls of film and a lens in this smaller pack, and after one day, the shoulder strap on that started falling apart too! I had to ask for needle and thread again. Then a couple days later, the other one started coming ondone, but by that point, I simply found another way to harness it with a front hook, because I didn't want to look like an idiot to the hotel staff. When the second one started coming undone, I was no longer carrying a lens - I was only carrying film!!! It's a shame that this bacpack was put together so crappily, because I was super excited when I first got it. Other that the crappy manufacturing, it acutally has a not of cool perks. Unfortunately, if you can't wear a backpack on your back, then what's the point?!
- How did the image on site compare with the actual product? The front is actually black, not midnight blue (was disappointed about that).
- Was the product free of any manufacturer defects? No - it didn't even last beyond the airport.
- Please tell us about the quality of the product. The sewing job was terrible, but everything else was great.
This is a very nice quality backpack for camera equipment. The only downside for me was that it was quite a bit larger than I expected. I may not have check the size specs closely before purchasing ,as I was looking for a more compact unit and this is definitely a full size unit. That being said, its not heavy in of itself. It has many pockets and actually stores more than my pelican hard case can.
