LCD TVs vs Plasma TVs
Flat-screen TVs seem to be everywhere. For you, the choice may seem like a toss-up between plasma TVs and LCD TVs. These competing technologies each have advantages, so it's important to consider your specific needs before purchasing a flat-screen TV. If you are highly knowledgeable, you may want to consider the more technical specifications of LCD and plasma TVs. This is a fast-moving technology, so the advantages of each technology may soon even out with one another. Until then, here are some facts that may help you with the choice between plasma and LCD TV technology. Price differences. While price is important, it doesn't tell the whole story when comparing LCD and plasma. In the past, plasma TVs were slightly less expensive than LCD TVs of the same size, and the price differential became greater as the size of the television increased. The gap in price has narrowed between flat-screen technologies, though. Price is probably the least important factor, especially since you can find good deals on both plasma TVs and LCD TVs. Use. How you use your TV matters. Plasma TV screens are prone to "burn-in," a problem in which still or static images can be more or less permanently imprinted on the screen. This is of particular concern if you play video games, which tend to display static images for long periods of time in the same location on the screen. Fortunately, newer plasma TVs are less vulnerable to burn-in. If you plan to use your flat-screen TV for video games or other static images, LCD TVs may be a better choice. Environmental considerations. LCD TVs use an average of one-third to one-half as much energy as a plasma TV of the same size. The difference comes from the different lighting technologies. If you are concerned about your energy consumption, LCD is a greener choice. As technology improves, plasma TVs may improve their energy consumption. Lifespan. When early models of LCD TVs and plasma TVs were compared, LCD had the longer lifespan. But plasma technology has improved, and plasmas now boast a lifespan equal to LCDs. Most flat-screen TVs claim around a 60,000-hour lifespan. Depending on your usage, this means your flat-screen TV should last 20 years or more. The only parts of an LCD TV that wear out are the bulbs that illuminate the LCD screen. On a plasma TV, the bulbs will also go out before the screen does. Size and weight. LCD TVs are typically much lighter and less bulky than plasma TVs of the same size. Plasma TVs use glass for their screens, which is heavier and more fragile than the plastic used for LCD TVs. When mounting a large flat-screen TV on a wall, use a flat-screen TV mount and be sure that the wall can support your TV's weight. Picture. Both LCD TVs and plasma TVs produce amazing high-definition picture quality. Plasma TVs typically display blacks more clearly and show crisper detail during fast-moving programming, like sporting events. LCD TV technology is catching up, though, and LCD TVS usually offer greater native screen resolution than plasma TVs. This means more pixels per square inch, for a sharper overall picture. LCD TVs can lose picture quality when viewed at an angle. Some models do better than others on this, so be sure to do your research on any LCD TV's viewing angles. What to Pack for Africa's Highest Peak
Imagine that you are planning a trip that will take you from the equator to Antarctica in seven days. Now imagine that you have to limit the amount of gear you pack to 35 pounds or less. The task is getting more complicated. What kind of luggage would you choose and how would you pack for a trip that encompasses such extreme changes in climate and altitude? When Erica Davis, a paraplegic athlete, and Tara Butcher, a physically challenged athlete, climb Africa's highest peak, they will have to answer exactly those questions. The challenge: Mount Kilimanjaro rises from nearly sea level all the way up to 19,330 feet. The trail climbs from the hot bushland through rain forest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic glaciers up to the rocky Uhuru peak. A climb like Mt. Kili presents special challenges when it comes to luggage, clothing and gear. Being prepared for the weather and temperature extremes is a necessity, but it's also important not to pack too much. There is a 35-pound weight limit to each piece of luggage carried by a porter. Most climbers pack one 35-pound capacity bag to go up with a porter and one small daypack to carry up themselves. The daypack: Erica and Tara will have 7 days to summit Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. As they pass from one ecological zone to the next, their needs will change and so will the contents of their daypacks. Each day Erica and Tara will repack their daypacks in anticipation of the specific challenges of the day's journey. In general, their daypacks will include things like water, snacks, dry clothing, waterproof gear and sunscreen. The importance of keeping clothing and gear dry cannot be overstated. When choosing a daypack, a small to medium backpack made of lightweight, moisture-resistant material that comes with a removable waterproof shell will be ideal. It's also helpful if the backpack has convenient access to a water bottle compartment or can accommodate a water bladder. Plenty of pockets, zipper compartments and hooks are also handy. What to pack: A sturdy but lightweight water-repellant duffel bag with a capacity of about 35 pounds is ideal for the trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The bag needs to have room for plenty of layers of breathable, moisture-wicking clothing and layers of fleece clothing, as well as a waterproof layer. To save space, it's a good idea to pack clothing that does double duty, such as pants that easily convert into shorts. Aside from clothing, the climb will also require accessories like sunglasses, hats and gloves, plus equipment like trekking poles and a headlamp, as well as toiletries like sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Support the Challenged Athletes Foundation: Overstock.com and the C.H.E.K Institute are co-sponsoring Erica and Tara's climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise awareness for athletes with physical challenges who wish to participate and compete in sports. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). CAF raises funds to give physically challenged athletes the opportunity to stay active and competitive in the sports they love. To show your support for physically challenged athletes like Erica and Tara, donate now to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for the Fit 4 Kili Climb. Best Dresses for Petite Women
If you are petite, finding clothing that fits correctly is essential. Petite apparel prevents you from looking boxy or drowning in too much fabric and ensures a fit that flatters your body. Shopping for petite clothing will help you find the right sizes with all the fashionable options as other departments. The best dresses for petites are easy to find with a few simple guidelines. V-necks draw the eye up toward the face. V-necks are flattering for all types of women, since they show off the neck and encourage the appearance of a long, lean body. Petite dresses that have a V-neck also create a vertical line and give the impression that you are taller. Look for petite clothing that allows you to play with accessories and show them off. For an evening look, pair the V-neck with layers of necklaces to look glamorous. Find knee-length dresses to flatter your legs. As a petite woman, flowing long dresses may cause you to look smaller. When more leg is showing, you will appear taller. A flattering petite dress is hemmed at the knee or just above the knee. Pair a petite dress with heels and your legs will appear long and lean. Don't go much shorter than slightly above the knee, since it may be inappropriate for work or more elegant parties. Select petite apparel that hits at the right length and is flattering to your curves. Vertical designs will elongate your body. Look taller by finding dresses that have a vertical design. Dresses that have vertical stripes create the illusion that there is more length. On the other hand, dresses that have too many patterns or colors may cause petite women to appear smaller. A simple dress is flattering, whether it's one solid color or contains a subtle pattern. Petite women can use a wide belt at the waist in the same color as the dress. Using a belt in a different color may cause you to look shorter, in addition to cutting your appearance in half at the waist. Popular Types of Quilts
Out of all the bedding made, quilts may be the most diverse. Quilts are produced in all kinds of colors, patterns, sizes, styles and types. If you're looking for a quilt but don't know where to start, take a look at the popular types of quilts below to learn more about this beautiful kind of bedding. Amish quilts: These beautiful quilts reflect the Amish way of living and feature solid colors, deep hues, geometric patterns and very little embellishment. Amish quilts contain the highest quality of construction and stitching, and, sometimes, the wonderful stitch patterns (scrolls, feathers) contrast with the simple backgrounds of their quilts. Applique quilts: These quilts use a French needlework technique where fabric pieces are sewn onto another piece of material to create a design. Applique is used extensively in the quilting process and is not to be confused with patchwork. Patchwork pieces are joined together; applique is sewn on top of the whole piece. Baltimore album quilts: Baltimore album quilts came from Maryland in the early 1800s. Each block in the design of these quilts is appliqued differently, often in ornate floral patterns. Bangladeshi quilts: These quilts are made with layers of Saree cloth. Saree cloth is silk cloth used by women of India to wrap and fold around the body as a garment. The cloth is usually 40 to 60 inches wide by 6 yards long. These quilts are used as bedding or as decorative pieces. Bargello quilts: Bargello quilts are created with offset squares in an up-and-down geometric "V" pattern. The small squares of different fabrics and the colorful designs make these quilts true works of art. Hawaiian quilts: Hawaiian quilts are not pieced, and they usually showcase a large, symmetrical applique in the center of the quilt. Most often the background is white or another solid color. Patchwork quilts: Patchwork quilts are constructed of many small pieces of fabric which are put together in an improvised or irregular pattern. This is a well-known quilt style, and examples of historical patchwork quilts are found in many museums. Ralli quilts: Ralli quilts, sometimes known as rilli quilts, are traditional quilts made in India or Pakistan. There is an abundance of embroidery as well as applique on the patchwork patterns. Star quilts: Star quilts are created with a large star shape, or several star shapes, dominating the pattern. Wedding ring quilts: Wedding ring quilts are crafted in a design of interlocking rings. This pattern goes far back in history: in the fourth century it was used to decorate drinking cups in Rome. Wedding ring quilts are highly popular and make wonderful wedding gifts. If you're looking for a gift to please an engaged couple, you can't go wrong with a wedding quilt. Bedding always makes a significant gift for the bride and groom, and a quilt with coordinating Egyptian cotton sheets can be even better. View All Quilts Back to Guides Directory View All Quilts
