The drive enclosure works like it should. I have multiple hard drives that I move around from computer to computer to my Sony Playstation. It's great for moving large amounts of data around. The drive does get very, very hot inside the case and I leave the top off for extended use. If you plan on leaving the drive turned on all the time, I would get one with a built in fan. They make more noise, but run cooler.
This is an easy enclosure to deal with. I installed a Western Digital 250GB IDE HDD in this case. Installation is easy, with instructions, screws (I've ordered cheapie enclosures and then had to rob an old PC for screws to mount the drive...not here) and good quality, easy connectors to work with. After physically installing the hardware it was off to the PC where WinXP recognized the enclosure and the hard drive and installed automatically. The Windows disk management utility allowed me to format the HDD the way I wanted (file system, partitions, etc.). It's been up & running for about a month now and I would do it all again if I needed another. So, if you've got an extra working hard drive that's just laying on a shelf, why not put it to good use as extra storage with this enclosure? I've learned that with a good USB2.0 connection, I can burn DVDs, audio, or any other data almost as fast as with my internal hard drive. One last note for MAC users: If you are going to use the same external hard drive on a PC & a MAC (yes it can be done), then you will want to format with the FAT32 file system. Any other issues or questions one has can be answered with a simple web search. I hope that this has been helpful. The overall rating should be a 4.5, but that wasn't a choice.
This enclosure seems to work very well. It is not 'screw free' (and the screwdriver for the small screws was not included) but was easy to use and install and seems to work well. It is a good buy for the price.
It never did work. Not sure what the problem was because I am very tech savvy. As cheaply made plastic figured that answered it.
- How did the image on site compare with the actual product? Cheaper made than it looks.
- Was the product free of any manufacturer defects? No
- Please tell us about the quality of the product. Poor
easy to set up. kinda takes up alot of space on your desk but whatever, a 3.5 ich ide harddrive is pretty big to begin with lol
You can't beat the price! It was so easy to setup. Computer detected it right away without needing to run the provided cd. What else could I ask for? Nothing except for thanks for more storage space.
I just received this about an hour ago. As soon as I got it I hooked up my IDE HDD. The installation was so simple. I didn't even need to read the manual. I also like the fact that it comes with an on/off button. Since there's no fan and it can overheat I can just turn it off when I'm not using it instead of unplugging it. I was worried if it would work with Vista. I'm so happy to see that it does. If you're running Vista and think you'll need help getting your computer to read the drive go here: http://*****
This item makes it easy to add temporary storage space to any laptop. It works like a champ.I'm ordering a couple more.
Great price, fast shipping and just as described. Now I don't have to throw out this old hard drive, works great for temp storage, testing new programs, downloads, etc. Can't say enough about it.
As far as function, this enclosure works well enough if you're in a pinch, but it's not something I would recommend if you intend to use the case for any amount of time. Drive installation is just about as simple as it comes, although the plastic buttons that hold the case together sometimes stick and it's not hot-swappable. The connectors are a very snug fit, making it difficult to swap HDDs, but ensure good connectivity. Since this enclosure does not have a fan (but is still quite noisy), it can become quite hot in a short amount of time and when it begins to heat up, there's a noticeable drag in speed. Overall construction is disappointing. The first day I had it, the black plastic became separated from the metal -- it's all connected by some sort of tacky glue that never properly sets so can be pushed back in place relatively well -- and after just one month of owning this enclosure, the entire front panel fell off while it was just sitting on my desk.
Its literally a snap to put the hard drive in. There's no fan so it can heat up, but to use as aback up hard drive its perfect. It takes less than five minutes to install and have it plugged in and going.
So this product is just as describe. Take a 3.5" internal hard drive put in the case screw a few screws (this is actually optional but it's plenty easy so just go ahead and do it) plug a few plugs and you are done! You have a brand new external hard drive!
It is inexpensive and does what I expect of it. I bought it to recover some data off of old hard drives (from computers and an old Series 1 TiVo). Since I use a computer operating system that isn't very well known, I'm always concerned whether the hardware I get will be supported by it, but I was able to mount the external drive without any problems. I've recovered the data and now use the external drive to back up my data.
Hard drive was simple to install and easy to use. Good value for the money.. Great way to sve and store old data.
