Phenominal
 from Maine,  Dec 6, 2010

These phones are extremely accurate, and are my new standard of reference for recording and mastering. What sets these phones apart is the imaging that they reproduce. The more they break in, the better they get. I own approx. 35 sets of headphones, rangng from $75 to $1800, and these are by far the best. Overstock's price was the best I could find, and I recieved then quicker that expected..

Superb Headphones
from Portsmouth, NH,  Nov 30, 2010

The AKG K702 are superb headphones, among the best you can buy. You will find them highly recommended across virtually all high end headphone reviews. The goal of these headphones is to play the music exactly as it was recorded without any coloration and that is exactly what they do. If you want accentuated bass for example, these are not the headphones to get-look at something like Dr. Dre Beats instead. Get these headphones because you want to hear every lovely detail and nuance that was recorded, exactly as it was recorded. As with most of the highest rated headphones, these are "open back" so that you will hear loud sounds in the room around you and if you are listening loudly, those around you can hear sound from the headphones. If these are issues for you, consider "closed back" headphones. Closed back headphones are likely to have more coloration however due to the acoustics of their enclosed space. Also, if you want to listen to the AKG K702s loudly, you will likely need a headphone amp (e.g. NuForce uDac-2 for $129). These are relatively inefficient headphones and require more power to be driven loudly. Also, as noted before, these headphones will play every detail of exactly what is fed to them which means "garbage in, garbage out". It would be painful to listen to 128 kbs mp3s for example. Also, many computer sound cards degrade the sound quality of the original source material. A solution is to use a high performance "digital audio converter (DAC)" which the NuForce mentioned above also is. The DAC takes the signal via USB and bypasses your sound card. (the NuForce is also powered by the USB connection). Note that these headphones, like most high end headphones, require "break-in". They sound great out of the box but it will take about 100 hours of varied listening before their full potential is realized. Finally, the AKG K702s do not come with a case. You'll want to figure out a good way to store these beautifully engineered headphones when you are not enjoying some of the most accurate, lifelike sound possible.

I bought these headphones for my boyfriend as a Valentine's day gift. He producesand writes music in his spare time at home and his headphones were starting to fall apart. So I did some research and decided on these. He says they're definitley better than the pair he had and work great.

Best sound quality ever!
from Albuquerque, NM,  Feb 19, 2011

If you are a serious musician, or just a serious music lover these may be the headphones for you! I did not know what to expect when I got these. There are mixed reviews on the head-fi sites about excessive treble and lacking bass. I found these to have a balanced sound suitable for analytical listening and music production. If you want your head to thump, these are not for you. I do listen to alot of electronic music however, and I found the bass levels suitable. I have been listening to all genres of music in these and it all sounds great. Mostly songs I've heard for years just sounded clean and pure, like the way I always knew the song should sound. I have made one discovery with these in The Doors song "Riders on the Storm" : Jim Morrison is whispering the lyrics on a second vocal track throughout most of the song! For the Overstock price, these are a steal, and are a great introduction to the audiophile headphone scene.

AWESOME SOUND!
from White Plains, NY,  Jan 7, 2011

I have been an AKG 240 fan since the late 70's. Simply a great set of cans. My second pair of 240's bought the dust recently so in looking for replacements I ran into the 702, and I am glad I did. The sound is simply AWESOME! I am hearing things I have not heard before. The sound is very expansive, not like in ear buds, or like other closed designs. The sound is open and clean. I am sold. The reason to get the 702 vs the 701 is that the 702 has a replaceable cord. The cord will eventually FAIL! This is a problem with all headphones, and not AKG alone. The wire will fray inside and render the headphones useless. This is what happened to both my previous pairs, and I even tried to repair them (I am pretty good with a soldering iron), but the repair is not always 100% and they they fail again. With the 702, you just get a new cord, and are good to go. I will NEVER buy another set of cans without a replaceable cord. Great design AKG, you guys rock! There is only one downside to these cans. The headband is NOT as good as the 240s. They decided to get fancy pants and put ridges on the side that rests on your head. The original 240 design had a simple flat strap that distributed the force over your entire head, and that is one the main reasons the design of these cans is so good. You can wear the 240s all day long and not get fatigued. The ridges create hot spots on your head that start to annoy you after an hour of wearing them. If you have more hair up there than I do, this may not be an issue for you, but the bottom line is the sound is so good, I will live with a little discomfort. Bottom line: Great acoustics, OK ergonomics, and a great price from Overstock.com. Highly recommended!

Best Buy
from Lompoc, CA,  Jun 23, 2010

These headphone are a relatively inexpensive way of getting excellent sound. One problem is that they can make you speakers sound less impressive than you previously thought (you may get spoiled). You don't know what you are missing until you hear your music through these headphones.

I had read about these headphones in the local paper and they were absolutely right about the quality provided by them. Overstock also had the best price by far.
