I was reading the reviews and thought I would say a couple of things to the reviewers: 1. To the guy who had to put in the underscores - try the "<P>" or HTML Paragraph mark. This works well to separate paragraphs. 2. To the Macintosh person - Remember that you can download virtual box from Oracle and run Windows under the Mac OS. You can pick up an old copy of Windows XP from eBay for around $50.00. Install it under Virtual Box, update it, and then install the Windows version of the program. It should run without a hitch since Virtual Box emulates all of the various types of equipment such as USB, Ethernet, etc.... I used a Mac at the UofH and put Windows XP on it. All of the software I used worked without any kind of problem even the networked printer located half the building away from me worked without a problem under Virtual Box. That's it. But this does look like a great product. :-)Read More

I really, really love this machine! I've loaned my Cricut Expression to my daughter and am using only this instead. The only problem I have with it is that it only cuts 8.5 wide. I'd love to have the Cameo, someday...Read More
This machine does what it is supposed to do, BUT, make sure you buy plenty of the sticky sheet, as you will only be able to use that 3 times at most. It is most essential if you are using vinyl.Read More
i had been on the hunt for a computerized cutter for some time because of the flexibility of being able to use my own fonts and pictures. boy, does this silhouette work great! got a good deal on it after thanksgiving on overstock.com several thanksgivinsg ago. since then, the cutter got jammed due to the cut paper separating from the sticky mat during the cutting process. so i had to pull out the mat manually. that messed up the alignment when i fed in the next sheet. so i emailed silhouette (still being under warranty) and got to exchange it for a new cutter. they told me to turn off the machine before i pulled out the jammed mat manually when (notice it's not 'if") that happens again. with the new cutter working as great as the old one, i did as i was told when the paper jammed again. same problem resulted with the alignment. but i'm getting around that by 1. turning off the machine after i feed it in, and 2. turning it back on and push the feed button again so that it feeds it in a little further. it's a little cumbersome, but i really didn't think they would send me a 3rd machine. other than that, it works great!Read More
I gave a lot of good tips, so read all the way and really sorry that Overstock doesn't format reviews to make it easier for you!! The gaps are an attempt to break up my paragraphs.____ Quick summary: great for average to above average computer users, like creating my own designs, like not having to buy cartridges, cheapest way to go for die cutting machine (in my humble opinion), overall good investment_______________ First, a little about me. I'm a graphic designer with training in Adobe Illustrator. The Silhouette appealed to me because I could create my own shapes and it was cheaper than buying a more expensive machine plus a million cartridges with something like Cricut. I did a lot of research on ****** and Silhouette and found the most positive reviews for the Silhouette so I decided to buy it here._______________ I bought the SD because I liked the idea of an auto-load/eject vs. the original Silhouette manual crank. Now, though, I think it'd be ok with the manual crank. I've never used the "SD" feature of this Silhouette._______________ I was a little nervous about the learning curve with this machine, but it hasn't been a problem for me at all (I consider myself about a 7/10 for computer savvy). I think this cutting machine might be more frustrating for people who are below average computer literate or those who don't want to hassle with setting up shapes to cut in the most economical way (so to not waste paper)._______________ I use the red cap (for "thick" paper) most of the time as the yellow cap just wasn't cutting well enough. I think I use average cardstock from the craft store, like the DCWV stacks. If you have really thick paper like bristol, the plugin I linked to below allows you to set the blade to run over the design multiple times. I haven't tried cutting vellum yet, but supposedly this machine can do that with the blue cap. I tried to cut out some pre-printed designs, but it seems like it never cuts exactly the same way twice, so I gave up trying (even after creating the template I talk about below). This is the biggest reason why I didn't give it 5 stars._______________ PROS: - make my own designs - not much else to buy after the machine except cutting mats (see my tip below) and paper - can cut very long designs (not even sure how long because I've never had paper longer than 12") - small and light, super easy to store_______________ CONS: - with the proprietary cutting software that comes with it, paper is wasted - a little difficult to use with Adobe Illustrator - proprietary software is PC only Mac users need a plugin - for some, may have to buy shapes through the Silhouette store, but they are inexpensive - only cuts up to 8" wide (if you cut the 1/4-1/2" wider they claim it can, you have an indented line from the wheels) - loud - lint and pet hair clings to the cutting mats pretty easily. They are hard to keep clean, but still work fine when dirty like this - when I bought in Dec 09, Vista users had to download a new driver from the Silhouette website (not really a con, just an FYI)_______________ Even though I listed more cons than pros, this is a GREAT buy. I think the pros still outweigh the cons and I would buy it again and recommend it to friends. I guess I'm just paying more attention to the down sides that you probably won't read about anywhere else online._______________ I downloaded a free plugin for use with Illustrator (on PC, may work for Mac too) here: ____ http://www.************************** ____ You'll have to test and set up a template to get everything to cut on the paper with this plugin (I made a 8 x 12 document and added a small box to be cut just outside these borders and make sure all of my shapes are within a 1/4" margin of the document and haven't had a problem. The box doesn't cut on the paper, but it lines up everything else to cut properly. I can set shapes to cut almost right at the edges, so no wasted paper!!). If you know Illy and like the freedom it gives you, it's worth the frustration of figuring this out. This plugin gives you a lot of control over the cutting. You can set the paper type, pressure, how many times the blade runs over the design and even the line type (solid, dashes, dots!!)._______________ My best tip: buy the ****** brand cutting mats. They are thicker and I feel like they last longer. They are a lot cheaper than the Silhouette brand cutting mats. The only down side is that you'll need to trim them to fit in the Silhouette, but it's very worth it.Read More
I have waited for years to purchase a Silhouette. I already knew it was a great product and did many wonderful things. I just had to wait for them to be Mac compatible. I got so excited with the release of the SD, it was Mac compatible. I bought it and got it right when Overstock.com said I would. Very happy there. I immediately got to work in setting up my machine. I downloaded the software (the discs included don't work for Mac) and began to play. But I couldn't make it work. I did all kinds of trouble shooting and even got live help. Nothing worked. And then I finally saw the system requirements, buried deep within the Silhouette website: Intel Mac. I don't have a Mac with an Intel processor, mine is a Power Mac. I wish that would have been more clear. Overstock.com doesn't say anything about system requirements (Mac or PC). And the Silhouette website says it is Mac compatible with operating systems 10.5.8 or higher. I have 10.5.8, but it is not an Intel processor. You don't find that in the requirements until you actually try to download the software. And even then, it will download, install and open, it just doesn't work!!!!!! So now I have an expensive toy that I can't use until I get a new computer.Read More
I'm happy with the product and Overstock's speedy shipping : ) I'm a graphic designer & like to create my own designs to cut insteady of purchasing pricy templates. This machine is a good price compared to other products on the market. (You could also purchase **** from their website for ~$ each.) Some negatives I've experienced: (1) Instrustional videos were VERY SLOW in explaning the basics, set some time aside before starting your first cutting project! (2) There is a border of wasted space (as with most cutters) for the side rollers and registration marks, so keep that in mind when creating your designs. (3) It takes AT LEAST 5 button clicks to go through the cutting windows before the machine starts cutting, I guess they really want to make sure you have everything set up correctly! Thanks for reading, I hope that was helpful!Read More
I've had my Silhouette SD for about 2 months and I absolutely love it. I've used it to create cards, labels, etc. It is an absolutely flexible tool and does everything as advertised very well. I don't have any cons for this product but I do have some recommendations for others that purchase the tool. 1. If you are buying this product to create custom shapes, note that a new version of the supporting software, Silhouette Studio, has yet to be released to allow for auto-trace. In the mean time, if you are graphics software savvy, Adobe Illustrator is a great alternative. Here are the compatible software versions: Mac OS X 10.5.8, Adobe Illustrator CS5, Cutting Master 2 Robo v1.80 (if you have Adobe Illustrator CS4, download Cutting Master 2 Robo v1.61 directly from Silhouette America's website) 2. The cutting pads are VERY sticky. You're safe if you're only dealing with cardstock but if you plan to use regular stock printer paper or anything lighter, peal away very slowly. I recommend bending the cutting pad rather than the paper. Obviously you want to retain the stickiness of the pad so what I've done is I've placed the sticky side down on the wax paper, held down on the paper and pulled the pad back slowly. Enjoy the tool. It's a real treat.Read More
I love this machine, it came in a timely manner and works beautifully. The only thing I could ask for would be a better user manual, it takes a little trial and error to get the cuts you want for the different types of media and it would have been nice if I could have just referred to the manual.Read More

Best Ways to Use Paper Shredders
If you're concerned about protecting your personal information and sensitive documents, a paper shredder is an important tool for properly destroying documents. Paper shredders are made with multiple security features. Some shredders cut items into long strips, while cross-cut paper shredders go even further and shred documents into small diamond-shaped pieces. Here are some of the best ways to use a paper shredder to protect your identity and sensitive information. Shred paper documents. Shredding documents containing personal identification reduces the chance of someone obtaining personal information such as your social security number, address, birth date and phone number. Medium-sensitivity documents containing addresses and phone numbers can safely be disposed of with a normal cross-cut or thin strip paper shredder. For more private information and confidential documents, shredders that are medium or high security are the safest selection. These high-end paper shredders cut paper into even smaller pieces. Dispose of media. Some paper shredders are durable enough to destroy CDs and DVDs. As modern life becomes increasingly digital, more and more sensitive information is stored electronically. To protect this data, the right paper shredders reduce CDs and DVDs into jagged shards of plastic, making it impossible for anyone to retrieve sensitive data. Light-duty paper shredders won't shred plastic, but shredders that are medium to heavy duty are capable of shredding CDs and DVDs as well as paper. Destroy old credit cards. Simply breaking an old credit card in half or cutting it up by hand isn't really a safe way to dispose of these easily compromised items. To be sure your credit information is safe, run old or non-used cards through a medium to heavy-duty paper shredder. View All Paper Shredders Back to Guides Directory View All Paper Shredders
