I always wanted a serger but was afraid that it would be too hard. My husband gave me this machine for my birthday (after much research, I decided on this one). The first few seams I practiced on went flawlessly -- then my thread broke and I was faced with having to re-thread it. The first time I failed. The second time, I did it!! The third time I failed again. I unthreaded it again and did it a fourth time! I kept unthreading and re-threading until I was no longer afraid of it. I now use my serger more than my sewing machine I guess because it no longer intimidates me. Don't know how I ever did without it!

I have this machine for a month. I'm now starting to use it, because here in Italy is 220V, the 125V machine works. So I had to buy a transformer. Now that I'm using, again, I find it wonderful! Simple, intuitive, practice! Very useful for everyone! I'm glad I made the purchase.

I purchased the Chair Caning Kit to redo the BACK of a chair. The kit comes with a 16-page booklet with fuzzy black-and-white photos and diagrams (a reprint from a 1958 issue of American Home Magazine). However, the detailed instructions are for re-caning a chair SEAT, so I'll have to improvise when I re-cane the back of my chair. Overall, I'm pleased with the quality of the cane, the how-to booklet, and the tools that are included to complete the project (four wooden dowels and a sturdy awl). The price is fair considering all the materials included in the kit.

I recently tried my friends serger to make costumes for the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. I fell in love with hers. Before long, my husband was out researching them online. He pulled up the American Home Serger and asked me what I thought about it. It looked exactly like my friend's. After researching it a little more, my husband bought it for me. I have been sewing and serging my heart out since I received it. It's easy to thread. The instructions are easy to read and informative.

I am loving this serger!!! I have wanted to get one for awhile and did a lot of looking around for something that would work well, particularly for a beginning serger user, and also would be reasonably priced. This serger has very easy to follow instructions and has been so easy to use so far. I still need to learn how to do all of the different types of edges with it, but am looking forward to doing this. Highly recommend!

This is my first purchased serger, although I've used borrowed ones before. I think this American Home machine is a terrific first serger, and a great value. It came already threaded with short lengths of sample thread which is important because who wants to take an hour learning to thread a serger when it first comes? You want to try that thing right out of the box! So all you need to do is follow the quick start directions to tie your thread onto the sample threads and you are off and running. The second time I got it out one of the overlock threads got tangled around one of the threadholders and it broke (my fault for not seeing it, not the machine's fault), so I did have to learn to thread it for reals before long. But by then I was over the initial excitement of my first serger and I felt okay with taking the time to figure it out. It is seriously complicated, but certainly no more than any other serger; it's a simple fact of life that sergers are a nightmare to thread. :) After much trial and error and referring back to the instruction book, I learned how to do it right. Also a learning curve is adjusting the thread tension for different applications, but it will be fun to continue to learn what works. I haven't even tried all the things this machine is supposed to be able to do (blind hems, flatlock seams, rolled overcast hems, etc.) but it will be fun to play around over the next few months! I've been sewing most of my life on conventional sewing machines, and I have to say the quickness and ease of a serger is kind of rocking my world! I think I'm likely to do most of my non-quilting sewing on this machine instead of on my sewing machine from now on!

This is my first serger, and I'm a total newbie to serging. I looked all over for a good serger with different capabilities in the $200-or-less range, and settled on this one. I mainly was looking for rolled hem and differential feed in a serger, and ease of threading. This comes with a handy DVD to watch, which makes everything look SUPER easy. It's not quite as easy for a newbie as the video makes it look, but I am getting better with practice. I was able to serge fairly soon out of the box. I now know I should have gotten a serger with a rolled hem that DOESN'T require a plate change, as this takes up time to switch, but even that isn't terrible. It does everything well, and if you pay attention to tension, things usually go smoothly. I did get a very reader-friendly book about serging that I read, which helped me with some background info and helps me solve problems with tension faster. I've been able to use this to make all sorts of things - I am now in love with knit fabric - and can whip up things with a more ready-to-wear look to them in pretty quick fashion. I advise anyone to ALWAYS run a sample piece of fabric through each time before you start a new project to make sure the threading and tension is correct....because if it's not, you have just cut off your seam allowance! Practice, practice, practice, and you'll enjoy it. This is a great starter machine...noisy, but that's because it's mechanical, not computerized (took me some getting used to when switching back and forth from my sewing machine that hums so quietly). Experiment, and you'll soon feel pretty comfortable with using this.
