Love Love Love my new serger! Works great! Had bad experience with my old serger, super hard to thread, etc. etc. This machine was much easier to thread and sews very nicely.

The Janome performs well, is not as hard to thread as I thought - although the bottom loopers take a bit of learning. The machine makes many relatively hard sewing functions simple to accomplish. Use big spools of thread - as any serger uses a lot of it. Happy with the purchase. Along with the Brother embroidery machine, it is easy to get professional results on our home projects.

I had never used a home sewing serger before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This product was out of the box and sewing the same afternoon. I am still learning what this machine can do. I was pleasantly surprised to find that with a few needle adjustments this machine can do some fancy stitches that I thought could only be had by spending more money on the this type of machine. For the level of sewing i am doing this machine was the perfect addition to my toolbox.

I have never owned a serger but used several. This is a great little machine. Light, quiet and the DVD makes the threading & tension a breeze to manage. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who loves to sew & have a nice finished project.. I have been using it daily since I got it ..and I am loving it !!!

This is my first serger. I bounced back and forth between replacing my 25 year old Singer sewing machine with a new one or buying a serger. Since the machine works fine, I decided to keep it and buy the serger. What a great idea! It is really a wonderful machine. The Janome Magnolia is sturdy, and sews and cuts beautifully. The machine comes pre-threaded to ease the pain of threading it. You have to attach and knot thread to the thread already loaded in the machine. Somehow I managed to pull the knot out of two of the threads, so I just took out all of the pre-loaded threads and figured it out, with a little assistance from a Youtube video. It was in Spanish, but it was easy to follow along with the visual cues. The thread guides are color coded, but the green ones are sort of tricky and hard to see, so you may need a flashlight to see the guides inside the machine. I didn't find the manual that helpful which is why I searched Youtube for assistance. I practiced on scraps to get the feel of the machine and to learn how it works before using it to work on a project. I think the machine does a great job. No stalling, hesitating or stumbling over layers, it sews and cuts right through. Having an older sewing machine, it's a nice change of pace to sew with the serger because it is fast and powerful! The Janome Magnolia is an affordable machine and it gets my recommendation. I am pleased with my purchase and am impressed with the Janome brand. When I do get a new sewing machine, it will be the same brand.

I never have touched a serger before and was not sure i needed one. I have used the machine so far to cover seams. I hate zip zagging. This is so fast. I made crib bedding and finished all the seams with the new machine. Love it! I was not sure it would be pre-threaded and I was hoping for a video that some reviewers mentioned. A happy yes to both. The spools had come off in shipping but were easily untangled and I was sewing in 30 minutes. It is a nice heavy weight machine and feels sturdy like it can handle anything I will try sewing over. Wish there were classes in my area but I have spent a few mornings searching tutorials online and have found several that give me confidence to get more acquainted with what it can do. Good buy

This is my first serger and at first the threading guide was a little intimidating. But, after watching the video that was supplied (3 times) I was success at threading my serger. I can't believe that a rolled hem on a scarf took only minutes. It would have taken me 3 hours with cramped fingers on my old machine. I love this and cant wait to find more sewing projects.

I had a 4 thread serger but got this one for the cover stitch capability and the chain stitch it can do. I am a man, by the way, whose mother taught him to sew (thanks Mom!) when he was a young boy over 50 years ago. Never had a serger until recently. This serger is a bit more complicated to thread than the 4 thread serger I had. Not impossible, it just takes a few minutes to read the manual and make sure the threads are done in the correct order and are in the right place before stepping on the pedal. There are a lot of moving parts in there that have to be set up properly. I have not mis-threaded it yet. That said, it serges flawlessly and the auto tension settings seem to make things very easy when sewing. They can be adjusted if the stitch isn't balanced in the material you are using. Serging is a great way to finish fabric seam ends quickly and professionally, but you really ought to understand how the stitch works and what you are trying to do with it, then do test runs on scrap before working on a garment. Most negative reviews I have seen of this machine seem to point out the user has not threaded the machine properly. (They don't say that specifically, but the way they are written it is pretty clear.) Many say they have had sergers in the past with no problem, or it never worked right, etc. In most cases it's pretty obvious that the person wanted to just take off and go without any preparation. Overstock has a great price on these and it's pretty hard to get a 5 thread serger anywhere in this price range.

Even being the owner of 6 sewing machines I was afraid to buy a serger because they looked so complex to thread and operate. When I realized how much sewing time I was wasting by not having a serger I decided to take the plunge. After a lot of research I decided on the American Home. This is a well built machine, easy to operate and thread. One of the great things about this serger is that it focuses on the fact that a buyer may never have used a serger before. The manual is very precise and user friendly and the enclosed DVD explains the operations of the machine clearly. It took me about 5 minutes to thread the serger for the first time and to have it up and sewing. The machine is a marvel. After sewing for over 30 years I can't think of anything this machine will not accomplish. I'd recommend it to anyone, either a novice or an experienced sewing enthusiast..

This machine has many new features that I did not have on my old Serger. So far has provided excellent results on my clothes and decor. Love the additional presser feet for some new projects.
