I had never used a home sewing serger before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This product was out of the box and sewing the same afternoon. I am still learning what this machine can do. I was pleasantly surprised to find that with a few needle adjustments this machine can do some fancy stitches that I thought could only be had by spending more money on the this type of machine. For the level of sewing i am doing this machine was the perfect addition to my toolbox.

Even being the owner of 6 sewing machines I was afraid to buy a serger because they looked so complex to thread and operate. When I realized how much sewing time I was wasting by not having a serger I decided to take the plunge. After a lot of research I decided on the American Home. This is a well built machine, easy to operate and thread. One of the great things about this serger is that it focuses on the fact that a buyer may never have used a serger before. The manual is very precise and user friendly and the enclosed DVD explains the operations of the machine clearly. It took me about 5 minutes to thread the serger for the first time and to have it up and sewing. The machine is a marvel. After sewing for over 30 years I can't think of anything this machine will not accomplish. I'd recommend it to anyone, either a novice or an experienced sewing enthusiast..

Purchased this item for my wife. She had been using my daughter's serger previously. I reviewed a number of machines which were often more costly with less features then the American Home unit. I would highly recommend it for its quality and especially the cost that Overstock offers it at.

I recently tried my friends serger to make costumes for the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. I fell in love with hers. Before long, my husband was out researching them online. He pulled up the American Home Serger and asked me what I thought about it. It looked exactly like my friend's. After researching it a little more, my husband bought it for me. I have been sewing and serging my heart out since I received it. It's easy to thread. The instructions are easy to read and informative.

The product arrived on time and seems to be of very high quality. I am happy with the accessories that came with it and also the DVD showing how to use the product. I have not used the product yet, but the directions for threading are very clear and easy to follow. I gave it four stars only because I have not used it yet, but I am quite happy with the product.

This is my first purchased serger, although I've used borrowed ones before. I think this American Home machine is a terrific first serger, and a great value. It came already threaded with short lengths of sample thread which is important because who wants to take an hour learning to thread a serger when it first comes? You want to try that thing right out of the box! So all you need to do is follow the quick start directions to tie your thread onto the sample threads and you are off and running. The second time I got it out one of the overlock threads got tangled around one of the threadholders and it broke (my fault for not seeing it, not the machine's fault), so I did have to learn to thread it for reals before long. But by then I was over the initial excitement of my first serger and I felt okay with taking the time to figure it out. It is seriously complicated, but certainly no more than any other serger; it's a simple fact of life that sergers are a nightmare to thread. :) After much trial and error and referring back to the instruction book, I learned how to do it right. Also a learning curve is adjusting the thread tension for different applications, but it will be fun to continue to learn what works. I haven't even tried all the things this machine is supposed to be able to do (blind hems, flatlock seams, rolled overcast hems, etc.) but it will be fun to play around over the next few months! I've been sewing most of my life on conventional sewing machines, and I have to say the quickness and ease of a serger is kind of rocking my world! I think I'm likely to do most of my non-quilting sewing on this machine instead of on my sewing machine from now on!

This is my first serger and I absolutely love it. The quality of the machine is awesome and my sewing projects look much more professionally complete because of this wonderful machine. The instructions were easy to follow and I had it up, threaded and running in about 20 minutes.

I shopped around on line quite a bit before I purchased this American Home Serger. I knew what I wanted so it was just a question of getting the price I could afford. Overstock.com was by far the best price and beat all competitors by quite a lot. I would definately buy this machine again and would certainly use Overstock.com. Your company was prompt and efficient.

I always wanted a serger but was afraid that it would be too hard. My husband gave me this machine for my birthday (after much research, I decided on this one). The first few seams I practiced on went flawlessly -- then my thread broke and I was faced with having to re-thread it. The first time I failed. The second time, I did it!! The third time I failed again. I unthreaded it again and did it a fourth time! I kept unthreading and re-threading until I was no longer afraid of it. I now use my serger more than my sewing machine I guess because it no longer intimidates me. Don't know how I ever did without it!

I purchased this to mainly perform the task of overcasting on my handwoven garments. I have been using it today for the first time and have been amazed at the quality of the stitches and the ease of the threading and tension adjustments. Years ago I owned a XXXXXXX serger. So far, I like this one better! I did take time to watch the video included with the serger which was very detailed and informative. This little serger does a whole lot more than what my intended purposes for it were. So if you are looking at satin stitching, overlocking, flatlock, hemming etc I think this will also do the job well. I also purchased the two year extended replacement warranty as it was only $XX. Several years ago I purchased a sewing machine with the replacement warranty for my grandaughter. A year later the machine was not working well so it was replaced free of charge. Her sewing machine is still working great three years later. I believe the replacement warranty is an important aspect of such purchases on Overstock.com.

This is my first serger, and I'm a total newbie to serging. I looked all over for a good serger with different capabilities in the $200-or-less range, and settled on this one. I mainly was looking for rolled hem and differential feed in a serger, and ease of threading. This comes with a handy DVD to watch, which makes everything look SUPER easy. It's not quite as easy for a newbie as the video makes it look, but I am getting better with practice. I was able to serge fairly soon out of the box. I now know I should have gotten a serger with a rolled hem that DOESN'T require a plate change, as this takes up time to switch, but even that isn't terrible. It does everything well, and if you pay attention to tension, things usually go smoothly. I did get a very reader-friendly book about serging that I read, which helped me with some background info and helps me solve problems with tension faster. I've been able to use this to make all sorts of things - I am now in love with knit fabric - and can whip up things with a more ready-to-wear look to them in pretty quick fashion. I advise anyone to ALWAYS run a sample piece of fabric through each time before you start a new project to make sure the threading and tension is correct....because if it's not, you have just cut off your seam allowance! Practice, practice, practice, and you'll enjoy it. This is a great starter machine...noisy, but that's because it's mechanical, not computerized (took me some getting used to when switching back and forth from my sewing machine that hums so quietly). Experiment, and you'll soon feel pretty comfortable with using this.

I live on a sail boat and need to do alot of heavy duty sewing. The discripition heavy duty not really. It's good for light to med. weight but does not go want to do the heavy weights. If you are looking for something to do less than HD then this is a good michine. I wish it would have come with a cover.

I have this machine for a month. I'm now starting to use it, because here in Italy is 220V, the 125V machine works. So I had to buy a transformer. Now that I'm using, again, I find it wonderful! Simple, intuitive, practice! Very useful for everyone! I'm glad I made the purchase.

I didn't know a thing about sergers and had never used one before. I had no problem setting it up and using it. This alone should tell you it's an excellent product. I love it!

This serger is a nice serger. I own four sergers, One Janome, and two older singers. This American Homer Serger is equal in performance to my $1000 serger. I have been looking for a free arm serger and was very happy to find this one. You do need to change the needle plate to do rolled hems. I am thinking about purchasing another one for my daughter-in-law.

I am loving this serger!!! I have wanted to get one for awhile and did a lot of looking around for something that would work well, particularly for a beginning serger user, and also would be reasonably priced. This serger has very easy to follow instructions and has been so easy to use so far. I still need to learn how to do all of the different types of edges with it, but am looking forward to doing this. Highly recommend!
