It was a toss up between the Janome 204D and the slightly less expensive Brother 1034D. There are thousands of great online reviews of the Brother. But having just a bit more to spend, I was concerned that the Brother, while a great machine, would be noisy and seem somehow flimsy (an impression I got both from reading 1034D reviews as well as through experience with other Brother products). I also liked the look and compact profile of the Janome 204D. I'm so glad I took a chance and went for the Janome. It's beautiful! It's compact, I think it's well designed, very quiet and runs extremely smoothly. It came threaded and my first project was complete within hours of opening the box. When it came time to re-thread the machine I watched about 5 minutes of the instructional DVD that came with the serger and didn't find it difficult (although I have only threaded it by tying and pulling the new thread through, not "from scratch"). Overall I'm glad I spent a little extra for what is obviously a quality machine.

I took this machine out of the box and set it up. Since it came all threaded, I put in a piece of material and started sewing right away. Worked perfect! I have changed the color of the thread several times and it is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. If you tie on the new thread and carefully pull it through there were no problems at all.
