This is a very nice basic machine. It' is identical to its cousin, the Kenmore (also made by Janome) , who got Consumer Reports recomended status because of its price and sewing ease. I can see why. It is a very basic but smooth running machine that will do all the utility stitches without any problems. Not sure why it is called heavy duty-- it is not heavy made. It does advertise having metal gears in the crtical areas, so maybe that is why. It is recommended, especially at Overstock's price!
I received this machine as a gift for Christmas. I have been a seamstress for 25+ years and I really like this one. It handles the jobs my lighter weight sewing machine can't do. I was pleasantly surprised on how easily it went through 6 layers of fabric. I have always used a Phaff industrial machine in the past. This one ranks right up there.
I love how portable this Janome Heavy Duty sewing machine is. I expected it to be heavy in weight, but it is very light and easy to move around. It is very versatile as I went from hemming a pair of jeans to fixing a seam on a silk blouse without having to change needles or the type of thread. I love this sewing machine and felt like I spent next to nothing to have a good quality product. I would definately recommend this machine to anyone.
This Janome brand sewing machine is great for beginners and pros as well. I'm taking sewing lessons from a lady who has been sewing 50 years. She helped me to thread my machine. One of her machines need repairs, but she asked me to order her one just like mine because it is easy, durable, and a great price (better to buy a new one than pay for repairs in her case). Anyway, my machine looks brand new! I'm very satisfied.
Because it was my first purchase,,,I was alittle skeptic.... this a great product for anyone who needs a sewing machine... I then purchased another one for a gift... the price is perfect.... very simple to use...overstock is a great place to buy. I received both machines in great condition and would recommend to anyone.... Thank you overstock.com
Great machine. I wish I could adjust the width of the stitch but that is my only beef. It is simple and consistent. I am thinking of buying another for a friend
i have used mine about 10 times since i got it a few weeks ago. great piece of machinery. simple and easy to use.
I am an experienced seamstress and have just finished sewing for 4-H with four granddaughters. We used this machine and it worked wonderfully. The stitching is excellent and it is easy to use as the youngest sewer is just eight. I've used it on fabrics from satin to denim with no problems. I would highly recommend this sewing machine as it is a great bargain. I especially enjoy the buttonhole feature which automatically makes the buttonhole the correct size for the chosen button. I have three other sewing machines and this is my first Janome. The features included in this machine are fantastic. I would not be afraid of refurbished products from Overstock either because I have ordered several and only once had a problem, and when I did their customer service was excellent. I find this product to be one I would purchase again!
I received the Janson heavy duty 11543 refurbished sewing machine and just want to saythat it works perfect, sews really well and I love the light weigth of this machine. The price was perfect also.I would definitely reccomend this to anyone who sews whetherit's just beginning sewing or more advanced sewing.I received it in several days and thrilled with it..I plan on teaching the grandaughter's to sew on it also.Tthanks overstock, you always have good quality products.
The machine arrived in good time and box undamaged. I set up the machine according to the enclosed directions and began to sew. After about 15 of use the refurb machine squeeked loudly. It looks like the refurb did not correct the problems or created additional problems. Buyer be ware and remember you get what you pay for..
A great value. Would recommend to anyone who wants an easy to use sewing machine with many standard features. I wonder why I waited so long to replace my old machine. Works on denim well too. I've only used it twice, flawless operation
I got this machine to reinforce a canvas boat cover... it handled the heavy fabric beautifully. I have also used it for pillows and other lighter jobs. I'm a first time user and didn't have any problems with it. Would definately recommend it to a friend!
I originally purchased a Janome Sew Mini, using it mostly for papercrafting. The Sew Mini model did NOT have variable spreed; it went fast or nothing--hard to control when sewing around curves. I bought this model as a replacement. For only $18 more, it has variable speed, is quieter, and sews beautifully. It is SO worth the extra money. I'm just glad that I found someone to give the Sew MIni too so that I could justify buying this one!
Overall it worked well to be a refurberished product. I use my quite often and the only issue I have with it is when I back stitch.
This is a great little sewing machine. Easy to use and the stitching comes out very nice. I have had this machine for 2 years now and it works beautifully.

I am not a professional seamstress, but do make some clothing for myself and my daughters. This machine does everything I want it to. No fancy stitches, but I didn't want them. This machine has feed dogs which can be dropped for machine quilting, which was important to me. So far, this machine has handled everything I have thrown at it, including binding a quilted blanket. The machine looks brand new and runs like a dream. This is a great little machine.

I've had this machine for about a year and a half and it's been working like a dream since day 1. It is very light-weight yet doesn't feel cheap. Is sturdy and holds up well to sewing through 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick fabric. Since it is light-weight it does tend to "walk" if you are sewing fast. I haven't tried putting anything grip-y underneth, but I bet that would help. It fits universal attachments very well. All in all, a very good machine and don't be nervous about buying refurbished. I haven't see a differeance and the price is so much better than brand new.
love this sewing machine, runs great, light weight, love the carry handle.
Package arrived safely without any damages. First, I was a little concerned about the machine being refurbished, however, the machine works well, and I have been enjoying this machine ever since, making pillow case covers, mini throw for my love seat couch, matcing pillow cases, matching cover for my PC monitor with the same material,, my teddy bears"s summer outfits, my summer shorts, tops, etc. etc. Non stop!!! For praticality and efficiency, this machine is great, that's what you need for your basic in your home. You do not need very expensive, super machine but this little machine does most of your needs. It is good for the price as well. Overall, it is great. I just wished that there was a machine cover to preveont from dust and more accessories, (e.g. bobbin cases, needles, etc. ) come with it. Overall, it is a practical and good machine.
I've had this machine for about a year and feel it is a fairly good value for the price. Although it lacks some convenient features like a one-step buttonhole and drop-in bobbin it would be a good machine for someone who is just starting out and doesn't need anything too fancy. It's able to sew through several layers of thick fabric, though you do have to take it slow. My biggest complaint is that the pedal tends to "race" and doesn't allow for very good control of the machine's speed.
