I was initially unsure about purchasing a microwave kiln. Most posts on glass fusing sites have very few positive things to say about microwave kiln glass fusing in general. Bur this looked like so much darn fun, and I certainly don't have the monies or the space for a large proper kiln atm, so I decided to try it out anyway. So glad I did! In the past 2 months or so I've made a ton of fused glass pieces. Some of them so nice I'll be giving them as jewelry gifts for holidays (I also purchased fittings for necklaces, bracelets and earrings)! Not everything came out great, but because this is so easy and quick and less expensive (compared to making larger pieces in a proper kiln) I don't care if I bork a piece; I've plenty more glass and I can fuse it less then an hour after the previous piece. A few things to note: If you are looking to make larger pieces than jewelry size (bigger than say, 2 -3 inches square) this set is not for you. If you have as much fun as I am having with the set, the initial supplies will go quickly. There's a number of good glass supply places online you can look into for more supplies. It's not cheap, but again, you'll be spending less overall because you'll be making small items and won't need to buy a huge amount. There is a learning curve, but it was not as steep as I expected - and I've never worked with glass before. I've only one microwave and use it for both food and fusing. I just clean it out between uses; hasn't been a problem at all either food or microwave wise.
My daughter has 2 of these kits and has made some beautiful jewelry pieces! Must be careful with how many watts your microwave it. My daughter has had a few pieces break but just made adjustments on the time in the microwave. We are very happy with this product. She (daughter) has enjoyed this hobby so much we are looking into getting a larger kiln to expand this hobby into a small business. It all started with this kilm kit. We are very happy!!!
I used this kiln twice and then it began to crack. It then heated unevenly & melted the glass all over the kiln damaging it beyond use. I have only owned it 2 weeks.
I recieved the kit in just a few days after ordering it! I hav been enjoying it almost every day since! I would definately buy from Overstock again.
Unfortunately, I had the same problem as another reviewer. The kiln cracked and chipped the very first use and the glass did not fuse/melt evenly. The part that did fuse properly gave me an idea of what it could be, but that doesn't help. After reading some of the other reviews I wonder if 1, some of the kilns are defective from the beginning, and/or 2, the differences in microwaves is the difference between success and failure. Also, I wish it were just a couple of inches bigger so it would accommodate making pieces 3-4" instead of only up to 2". That would make it much more worthwhile for jewelry making. Especially for pendants. It's a good idea but maybe needs to be tweaked to allow for differences in microwaves.
This is wonderful for anyone who loves making jewelry. The only down side is you need a dedicated microwave that you are not using for food. Very easy to get use to.
Fun, educational creative outlet for kids about 11-14 yrs old. You melt the design in a microwave. Still requires an adult supervise younger children, but sparks interest in art.
This sounded like a great idea for fusing glass jewelry. However, my experiences proved differently. I believe the problem is that it heats the glass too fast, causing it to break pieces or pop pieces off the background. I have a pendant piece that is about 1.5" long by .75" W that I put 3 tiny glass bubbles on. One popped off, one remained in place and one ended up underneath the pendent causing a bump, ruining the piece. I followed the directions explicitly and experimented with other times and temperatures to no avail. I don't believe I will waste anymore time or supplies with it.
I love this kiln! It works great and is the perfect size for making small jewelry pieces.
I wanted to get into fusing glass, but I didn't want to pay a lot of money for an expensive kiln. This is a great way for beginners to make fun, lovely pieces. The kiln is small, but it is a great size for making jewelry. Be sure to read the directions before firing the glass, and all should work well!
