  • Great little machine

I am enjoying my first serger ever. It is fun to quickly be able to overlock seams and fabric edges, especially fabrics that are prone to fraying. I rescued a shirt I made that had frayed through the shoulder seam. I wasn¿t prepared for how long it would take to learn to thread the machine (several hours and several incorrect threadings), or for how long it takes me now that I know. This is not like a sewing machine that can be threaded in a few seconds. Even now it takes me about 10 minutes. I think I can probably cut a few minutes off of that time with more experience. That said, I have tried several of the stitches, and I like the results. The stitch width and length are adjustable with knobs. The width adjustment is somewhat inconveniently located, but works well. Built-in trimmer - This machine has a built-in trimmer with a detachable tray to capture the waste. This trimmer can be moved out of the way if you don't want to trim the edge. It has a replacement blade included. Thread - Four large spindles of white thread come with the machine (they are smaller than typical cones and not cone-shaped). I couldn't find the length of the thread listed anywhere. I had problems with the thread breaking--this may be due to improper threading. It took me several hours and several attempts to finally thread the machine properly. (I'm a guy, and you know about guys and reading directions . . .) The illustrations were helpful; read the directions carefully. I bought four (3000 yard) cones each of inexpensive white and black thread from a local fabric store which are working well. HOWEVER, they don't fit on the spindle adapters. I put my new cones OVER the spindles that came with the machine and this is working beautifully. The section of the manual that covers the various stitches is well-written. It gives detailed descriptions of various stitches with 2, 3 or 4 threads. There are suggestions for tension dial settings, but I had to make many adjustments on several scraps of fabric to get the tension correct. This might just be me learning to use the machine. For someone like me who is just learning, it was great to see an illustration showing how the stitch should look, illustrations showing how the stitch should NOT look, and how to make adjustments to the tension dials for each part of the stitch to correct tension problems. This machine comes with a handy drawer in the side for storing the things you need to have handy. No more lost screwdrivers or adapters. The following items are included: ¿ 3 replacement needles - this machine can use regular home sewing machine needles--I don't know whether or not this is unusual. They specifically caution against using industrial sewing machine needles. ¿ replacement blade for edge trimmer ¿ tweezers ¿ these are 4 inches long with an angled end ¿ absolutely essential for threading certain parts of the machine ¿ four adapters for using regular spools of thread (I haven't tried these yet) ¿ cleaning brush (sergers need frequent cleaning and regular oiling because of lint from edge trimming and 2-4 interlocking threads) ¿ three different sizes of screw driver (including one that wasn't listed in the manual)--it's great to have the sizes you need included with the machine

  • A quality product

I currently own a Pfaff Hobbylock serger which I paid almost 3 times as much for. This serger is nearly as good a machine at an excellent price. It's a real quality product. Thanks!
