Machine works well; and I got it at a good price on Overstock. Great for crafting, and a lot of flexibility in how to import images to use.

The silhouette was a great value, much better than the competitors when all the extras are factored. The product had clear instructions and was simple to use. The only limitations are your own imagination!

Purchased as a Christmas gift for my daughter-in-law; she is now addicted and can't get enough of Silhouette. What a pleasure to give a gift that is well received and enjoyed!

I'm not into scrapbooking - I bought this machine because I did not want to be limited by cartridges - I could make my own designs in PhotoShop, open them in Silhouette Studio and create my own templates and images. I wanted to be able to create items that I can cut out on sand blast resist and then acid etch them onto fused glass items. Cutting out letters was a challenge but I figured it out and it turned out quite nice on a gift bottle of Gentleman Jack (full). (Hope he keeps the bottle). Was a learning curve and I've yet to get the SD card to work but I will. That way I won't have to have it connected to the computer. This is fun and I'm enjoying playing with it. I also created a cutout card using one of the included templates after playing with it. Did discover that my 8.5x5.5 notecards permanrtly stick to the mat and make a mess. Ended up using some 65 lb cardstock that I already had and it worked great. Caution. Do NOT put a magazine on the sticky mat by mistake - it will not come off. Duh! Had to buy a replacement mat. If you are into scrapbooking and don't want to be limited by cartridges (or buying them), this is the machine for you. Plus the Silhouette website has all sorts of patterns available for not very much money (.99 and up and some are free).

1) Best price and service at OS, no questions! I have had it for exactly 2 weeks now. 2) Blade installation was really simple once I stopped reading the manual which doesn't simply tell you to pop it into the slot and turn the lock to the right. I saw you tube video and it was a snap. 3) Mat was way too tacky and manual doesn't say to remove tack by rubbing it on a low lint pillow or something. My first cut was good but the white residue left over by CS was a mess. Plus the blade setting was set according to the instructions but it gouged through the mat right off the bat. 4) Loading the mat was complete guess work, why no instructions on how to align? If I place it such that my 8x11 mat sits between the two white rollers, it seems to work. There are 3-4 guide lines on the machine front left but no markings on them, not sure what they are for! 5) There are markings for letter size and A4 size material placement on the mat. Align your top left and right corners of paper on the mat using them, they are hard to see but there. This will ensure perfect placement of paper on the mat. 6) Software installation is very easy and using it is intuitive. I haven't played with print/cut or other advanced features yet but will soon. 7) Free 50 designs will come through after software installation and you click on recent downloads (or is it import to library? sorry, can't remember). 8) I cut intricate vines/leaves on Coordinations textured cardstock, it came out very well but for one of the smaller sizes. I had put several sizes on one 8x11 CS to avoid wasting CS. 9) Tried a Moroccan lattice background (very detailed) on regular patterned scrapbook paper. The setting was at 3 and it didn't cut anything. I set it to 4 and then it did a beautiful job. So their blade setting recommendation is not an exact science, it's trial and error. 10) Machine is light and portable, make sure you have room on the table for the mat to go back and forth, without it being obstructed by your laptop or wall etc. 11) Silhouette should post some basic videos on their site to show basic placement of material on the mat, mat loading, blade installation etc. They are seriously lacking in that especially for new comers to die cutting world. The DVD that comes with it is not that much more useful especially regarding mat insertion. They just say align between the rollers but you could align exactly the left edge of the mat or you could load with half an inch off as they show...sigh! I have it figured out now with trial and error. 12)You can even cut .svg files WITHOUT designer edition of the software. Just use inkscape. Google for instructions. Of course you can trace and cut any jpeg too if you didn't know. Oh, and you can turn a regular cut file into a print and cut file. How cool is that? 13) Categorizing and tagging free designs is not well designed in studio software. Even the silhouette store bought designs have pnc (print and cut) on some files and not others! You can't change tags for those either. Free designs on the net can be easily tagged or categorized when you import them into your library from your HD. 14) I am already ordering a spare blade/mat because they will be consumables. Shop around for good price, enough price variation out there.

Overtsock.com has the best pricing on this product you will find anywhere. The Silhouette Portrait has the same motor and cutting mechanism as the CAMEO in a smaller lightweight 3.5 pound package. This machine cuts through all types of material like butter! No more snagging or tearing of paper during cutting like you experience with other die cutting machines. Carrie from ucutathome couldn't have said it better, "If you have been searching for an affordable die cutting machine that will fit in a small space, with no need for cartridges or dies, which allows the freedom to cut your own images and fonts downloaded on your computer, this is the machine for you! This machine will enable you to create your scrapbook or card embellishments with minimal effort."

My wife wanted a craft cutter and was researching cricut's.. I wanted something more techie, like a plotter style for cutting vinyl, but didn't want to pay a few grand for a full size unit. Then we found the Silhouette. This thing is fantastic. Cutting is fast and accurate. The software allows me to pull images from the internet, highlight and click trace, modify the lines as needed, then cut out the image. The best part about it is the ability to make custom gifts for family and friends. Save a ton of money and give wedding presents with a personal touch. I also plan on cutting lots of vinyl stickers for friends who race motorcycles. Online tutorials are great and the software is pretty easy to use. It's not XXX but it does good work. I look forward to making all sorts of neat stuff with it.... oh, and I'll let my wife use it too! Highly recommended!

This is a good starting die cut machine. Instructions are not adequate to start using the machine though. Even the CD rom's made it very difficult to start. I recommend purchasing extra cutting mats, as you will go through them learning to use the machine. Once you get the hang of it, it is a great product for the price. Most cutters are a lot more expensive, and you have to purchase the shapes from cartridges.

I read many reviews both good and bad before deciding to purchase this machine. I had quite a bit of hesitation at first...I'm sooooooooo glad that I went ahead and purchased tha CAMEO... So far, it has exceeded my expectations. I would reccommend this machine to everyone looking for a relatively inexpensive electronic die-cut machine...

Of the many different paper cutting machines out there, this one is by far my favorite! It has many features that can not be found in other machines and it is so easy to use. If you are a scrapbooker, or just like doing various crafts then you will LOVe this machine.

I am in love with my Silhouette. I have already cut fabric on it for two shirts, vinyl for a wall saying with trains on it in my son's room, and plan on using it on a wood sign to create a stencil for painting. In addition, I have a couple of more projects lined up (some paper products for a birthday party, and cutting contact paper to decorate a window). This machine is so versatile, I love that I can upload jpeg files and trace shapes that I like, and use all the fonts I have on my computer. Plus, there are soooo many in the Silhouette store, and they are each only 99 cents, and they give out a free shape every week. Cons: It is quite a bit more expensive than the comparable product of it's competitor. But that one requires cartridges, and in the long run, I think you will save money on the Silhouette. So that's not a major con. The instruction manual is horrible. I cut a hole in my mat the first time I used it because I put the blade in backwards (per the manual). There is a getting started video on the Silhouette website. Go with that instead.

There are so many different things you can do on a Silhouette, and I'm still learning them. It's been great for party favors. I would get another one if anything happened to the one I have. It is very easy to use.
