Great buy!
from Falls Church, Va,  Sep 22, 2010

I did not buy this from Overstock but got it for a similar price (a couple of bucks more) at a brick-and-mortar crafts store. This will not work with yarns thicker than sport weight, but it is super fast at creating i-cords. I hate hand knitting them, so this is a perfect solution to that! Once you have it set up, you can crank out 2 feet of i-cord in under a minute. For creating miles of cord for braided scarves and the like, this is invaluable. I wish it would handle heavier yarns, but for the money I can't complain.

Embellish Knit
from Glendale, CA,  Nov 29, 2008

Me bad for not asking more questions about this item before purchasing. This will work with finer weight yarns -- probably sportweight and lighter. Althought it says it will work with "lightweight fancy yarns" given the problems I had making it work smoothly with the sample yarn provided, I would be very concerned. I found I had to keep on eye on the device since the yarn tended to slip off the latches, skip and do other annoying things because it is difficult to put the yarn back onto the latches due to the plastic case to protect fingers from the latches. My kit didn't have the "tapestry needle" referenced in the instructions and the instructions themselves which were a bit spotty. I think it took me about 45 minutes to figure out how to get it to work.I actually wanted something that would work with heavier weight yarns but should have realized for the price this wouldn't do it. I may try this with some crochet cotton I have and see if I can't make some quick potholders. Using a weight on the end of the yarn did help somewhat with tension but I found the weight so heavy, it kept pulling too much yarn down while I was trying to set up the first row or so. Also, be sure to let your completed cord "untwist" every couple of feet or so.Unless you want to create a lot of I-cord with finer weight yarns, save the money and just spend the time knitting the I-cord yourself.

This little machine has a learning curve. I watched YouTube videos before starting. It does take practice to get it to work well. I was like the other people when I first started making i-cord, not finding the right size yarn. (crochet string was easiest to practice) But after using a heavier weight I have had much better luck with light-weight yarns. The device can crank out yards of i-cord in one evening. I still keep a sharp eye out for mistakes but I am usually adjusting the weight so it does not hit the floor. Take something heavier and dangle it from the weighted clip supplied in the kit. I used my camera because that was the first thing available. It is not ideal because the strap is too long but you will be able to find something around the house. The i-cord will twirl as it grows so keep your ball of yarn away or they will become twisted together and slow your progress. I have found that using my left hand to twist the handle works best for me because I have a free hand to straighten the yarn and use a small crochet hook to catch missed loops. A few missed loops will not spoil the end result. Do not go crazy turning the crank because you may become discouraged. I have also introduced crochet string along with the yarn to produce multicolor results. The yarn does have to be light-weight to work correctly. Right now I have made fun figures for the grandchildren: a monkey and twisty characters. I use a yarn needle to sew them together. I would love to teach the grand children to turn the crank when they get older. This product is not for young children but an older child will have fun.

  • How did the image on site compare with the actual product? The image was accurately pictured.
  • How accurate was the on site description of the product? Making 18 feet in ten minutes is not a good reflection for beginners.
  • Please tell us about the quality of the product. Great Buy for the Money!

Did not work
from Lake Elsinore, Riverside County, CA,  Dec 30, 2010

This little gadget for knitting DOES NOT work with any other yarn but the yarn that goes with the package. I tried several different light weight, sport weight, baby weight, lace... Nothing ever worked. It kept on jamming, skipped, split. So frustrating. I would not recommend it to anyone.
