Great Value and Incredibly Easy
from Pensacola, FL,  Jun 13, 2006

I have never sewn anything much less even thought I would ever know how do embroidery, but this machine is awesome...I had it set up and working fine in just one hour. This is my new hobby. The embroidery feature is easy after you figure out the tension settings and I have made awesome creations for my son. It is very easy to switch the machine back and forth from sewing. It was refrub. but looked just like new to me; I would recommendend to any new hobbyist. EASY and fun!! This is a very theraputic hobby; talk about stress relief.

I am surprised at how nice this machine works
from Jacksonville, IL,  Jun 12, 2006

I bought this machine as just a toy while my 17 year old Swiss machine went in to a refurbishing( I paid $2500 for that in 1988). I also wanted to try out an embroidery machine to see if I really wanted one. So, I am used to a quality machine that delivers consistent stitching on a variety of materials. I am surprised at how well this machine sews, how much fun the little features are: automatic threading cassette, automatic thread cutter-what a blessing!. It took a few days to get used to the computerized screen after using a mechanical for so many years. The embroidery machine is very nice and also takes optional cards. It does a beautiful job. On the downside, it has a lot of plastic parts which may not be durable. Overall, this machine is a great value, fun, and easy to use. I am really surprised at how nice it is.

OVERSTOCK SENT ME 2 BROKEN MACHINES SO FAR
 from California,  Sep 28, 2006

We are waiting for our third machine. Overstock sent me 2 broken Brother SE-270D machines. They both arrived with loose packaging and the shuttle housing was loose, along with the bobbins and the covers, floating loosely. The first machine did not sew, and had uptake lever problems, which meant it looped the thread constantly around the bobbin, and got stuck constantly. The second machine's computer is broken and will not recognize Brother PE Design cards, or any format of card. Originally, during the first return, we had arranged to have the product shipped to us immediately on an expedited shipment, due to the bad product, so we could begin embroidering once again, immediately, however the process took over 9 days, and we did not recieve our shipment for 9 days, which was shipped regular UPS, and was not expedited. The second shipment has arranged for expedited shpment, and I have lodged my complaint. When I find out how the THIRD refurbished machine works, I will let you know. Other than Overstock's faulty, low-quality products, the machine is one of THE NICEST I've ever used. I'd never go through this trouble to get one, if I had not thoroughly (other than this time) enjoyed the use of the product. You can digitize images to embroider, and you can download them to a card, which is inserted into the machine, and read. So, you are unlimited as to what you can do. The software you use is called PE Design, and it's expensive, but it's worth EVERY PENNY. PED-Basic is a great program with a card reader/writer that you can write .pes files to and use on the machine, without having to spend $1000 on the PE Design. The PED-Basic runs about $140. I really loved using this machine. I am an experienced seamstress, and am very disappointed, however, in the quality of workmanship used to refurbish this machine for Overstock.com. Overstock should take better care with such expensive merchandise AND when they tell a customer they will expedite an order, it needs to happen. Thanks for reading.

Brother SE270D
from Dayton Maine,  Oct 11, 2006

This was my first time purchasing on overstock.com. I've been looking forward to an upgraded sewing machine for several months. I found this one on overstock and let me tell you, if it seems too good to be true - it probably is! I was very disappointed right from the start. I opened the box (all in tact and undamaged) I removed the machine and i noticed the seams weren't quite together on the right hand side. The turning knob on the right was off and the belt inside was loose and detatched. i placed the belt and the wheel on and started sewing. the first 5 minutes were great until it started jamming and the top thread would wrap around the bobbin. i stopped at this point and reboxed it and I'm now waiting for a return # to ship back. I was also disappointed in the plastic parts for such an expensive machine, the top plate and bobbin holder should be metal not plastic. it just didn't look as durable as i would hope. I must admit though the one thing i did like was the touch screen options and directions this made it quite easy to follow directions. Good luck to whoever purchases this machine - i hope I'm the only one who got a defected machine, so that you other sewers can enjoy it. For now I think I'll stick to my Janome - Patty B -

Best price on this machine
Anonymous  from California Bay Area,  May 4, 2006

I checked all over and this was the best price I found on this machine. My regular Brother sewing machine has been a workhorse. This machine looks just as well made although it is reconditioned. It's easy to figure out and to operate. I'm thoroughly enjoying learning to machine embroider on it.

I was pleased with the accessories and owner's manual. The machine sewed well as a sewing machine as did embroidery as described in the manual and as pictured on the LED display. This is a great hobbyist's machine, especially if you have a resource for questions and advice. I decided to return it because I was looking for a machine that could handle more commerical type work but if I were sewing for children or grandchildren I would have kept this machine. Has heirloom stitches and decorative stitches as well as the embroidery. Self threading was good. Like any new technology there is a learning curve but the machine and it's performance were very good.

Awesome machine!
from Grand Canyon, AZ,  Nov 18, 2006

I bought this machine, and it works great. It came in a brown box as someone had stated it was shipped in an original box and ruined a present. Mine came UPS within a few days and was not damaged when received. I have made many things since receiving my machine, and as others have written .... I have not had one problem with my machine. No broken needles and no damaged parts in shipping. There are many items available for this machine to make it more fun to use. I plan on making quilts for charity - - this machine is just fun to use. Thanks Overstock for having Bill Me Later and a great product.

Very happy
from West Palm Beach, FL,  Jun 18, 2006

This machine is designed beautifully. It is light weight and very easy to operate. I haven't used all of the features as yet. I am pleased that I can go over fairly bulky materials, without any problems. Such a blast to push a button and have the machine cut the thread when sewing is completed. Great price ... love shopping at Overstock.com.

Well, I'm still trying to learn the techniques of using an embroidery machine. My first attempts at the embroidery were not the most beautiful. The stitching seemed a little ragged and not as "exact" as I would have thought. But in all fairness, I have a lot to learn about using the proper stabilizers, and adjusting my tension. As far as I can tell, there is no way to adjust the bobbin tension. At least it is not mentioned in the manual, so I assume we are not recommended to mess with the bobbin. The manual is full of step by step pictures on how to work the functions of the machine, and it is also filled with warnings on every page about the possibility of the needle breaking and Causing serious injury.  I received my machine on time. There was a small screw missing from the embroidery hoop, but I was able to find a replacement. All in all, I think it is a good machine, and an excellent value, especially for an embroidery beginner. (I am very excited about the buttonholes and eyelet functions) But I just need more practice and training to get everything looking how I want it to.

A Lemon
from Morro Bay, CA,  Mar 28, 2007

Bobbin threader, a very basic feature, stopped frequently without filling the bobbin. The needle threader stopped working the second time I used it. Did ok on straight and zigzag stitching but I shudder to think what will happen when I try to use it to embroider anything if it can't handle filling the bobbin or threading the needle. Overall I wouldn't buy a "refurbished" machine again.

Don't know if the problems I encountered are specific to this particular machine since all other reviews are so glowing! Had constant problems with thread jamming around the bobbin shuttle, and bobbin shuttle not picking up the thread no matter what I tried. Also the automatic needle threading was not working correctly. Am not new to sewing or machine embroidery (over 50 years of experience), so worked over 8 hours trying to overcome the jamming issues. I want to hope and believe this was a one time fluke. Overstock.com was responsive in a positive way to helping resolve the issue.

nice machine; poorly reconditioned
from Homer Glen, IL,  Oct 4, 2006

I bought this machine a few months ago. I didn't realize right away that it didn't thread itself anymore (the best feature) because I didn't change colors or just thought "I still need to learn how to use this thing". So now I am stuck with a machine that boasts self threading and that feature doesn't work. Other than that, it's very nice. I still don't know how to use any computer options. It's not really user friendly. Very basic features can be figured out easily and the machine is usable, but not to its capacity.

WOW! even a guy can sew...
from Johnson City TN,  Sep 15, 2006

I'm 63 and retired from the USPS, a man. Remembering as a child watching with facination as my mom would piece together materials for clothes & quilts, and sit by a heater in the winter and embroider... I saw what all this machine would do so I bought it on a whelm-- I've already pieced together a queen size quilt in one week, embroidered a butterfly and monogramed my initials..., I'm amazed.

Brother SE270D Sewing/Embroidery Machine
from Washburn, WI,  Sep 1, 2006

I have been sewing on a manual machine for 50 years and sure have a lot to learn about computerized sewing. I think for the cost of this machine I could afford to learn. I have only had it for two weeks and have tried regular sewing making curtains. Easy to use and did a fine job once I was able to figure out the tension. I also tried the Embroidery feature just for fun. Amazing first time results. You do have to read the manual however. A lot of stitches and features for the cost. I would like to know where to get accessories. I live in a remote rural area with no close dealers.

A great machine!
Anonymous  from Texas,  May 2, 2006

I needed a new sewing machine, and couldn't believe I found this one that also did embroidery for such a great price. I just love this machine! I thought it would be hard to learn to use a computerized sewing machine, and to embroider with it, but it was a breeze. And, it does a beautiful job both for sewing and embroidery!
